Hello and welcome to i.SCOUT-GLOS.

This is the first issue of what we hope will

be a helpful and interesting newsletter

for all things “Scouty” in Gloucestershire.

But any newsletter needs news. If you

would like to send in your stories then

just email us at [email protected]

and we will do our very best to include it

in the next issue.

Issue 1

In Cheltenham, membership is up

by 12.5% showing an increase in

all sections and leaders. Beavers

can also look forward to a Teddy

Bear’s Picnic to celebrate 25 years

since Beaver Scouts started.

Two Explorer Scouts from the

Cotswold district have just been

awarded their Gold D of E award;

congratulations to them. Also,

there has been an increase in

district events so there will be lots

to do throughout the year!

Congratulations to Cam Scouts

who recently won the County

Cooking Competition and went on

to the regional competition. Also

in Cotswold Vale, a tour of

Highgrove has been organised

and will take place on the 5th of

May.

District football competitions have

taken place for Beavers, Cubs and

Scouts! Speaking of district

activities, planning is well under

way for the May Olympics, a series

of events to take us all the way to

the opening ceremony in 2012.

A district camp is due to take

place on the 6th to the 8th of May

where all of the Groups in the

District will be represented. St.

George’s Day parade is going to

take place on the 1st May with a

military band to lead the march.

Nearly 400 young people and their

families took part in a District hike

recently. Congratulations to all of

them. May seems to be a busy

month in Stroud and Tetbury with

events including a Beaver Air

Activities Day, a Pennwood open

day and a Cub football

competition

A new Beaver Colony has recently

opened in Mitcheldean and was

met with a flurry of interest from

both potential leaders and young

people. Also, 70 Scouts are going

to the Haarlem Jamborette. Good

luck to them and have fun!

Recently Gilwell have made some

changes to the rules on swimming of

which leaders need to be aware. The

changes are:

• Paddling has been clarified and

requires no qualification by leaders

• No further qualifications are required

in instances where a lifeguard is

provided (including swimming pools

and beaches)

• Swimming in pools and Class C waters

are now managed in line with other

Class C water activities. No

qualifications are required by leaders

• Swimming in all other open waters (B1

and higher) has been simplified and

safety cover can be provided by either:

- a water activities permit holder

(when following the guidelines outlined

in the swimming factsheet)

- someone who holds the Royal Life

Saving Society Water Safety

Management Programme (WSMP) or

any equivalent or higher award.

Full guidance is available in

the swimming factsheet

“The Scout Who Escaped

Auschwitz” the incredible

was imprisoned by the
