Due to circumstances beyond our con-trol, it is necessary to make some major
changes with the WHNL. We have been
very fortunate to have printed in color the past several years—thanks to the Beloit
Club. This is no longer possible. We will be sending future issues in black and white.
Color will be available on line so if you pre-fer your issues in color, you will need to go
to http://whpahorseshoes.com This is our
official web page and is an excellent source of Wisconsin horseshoe activity.
Another excellent contact is to become a member of the WHPA BULLETIN
(YAHOO! News Group)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/whpa_bulletin You must go to the site and
register. This site is used to send notices to
WHPA members about illness, deaths, or
other information about our membership. If you have not signed up for this service,
please do so immediately. If you would like
help registering, feel free to ask Jimmy for advice.

WHNL Changes / Horseshoe Family
Our horseshoe family is a very caring
group of people. Prayers, cards, emails, phone calls all make a person suffering
smile. We have received word that several of our family are facing major medical chal-
lenges. Kevin Brekke has kept me updated on John Garvan’s health. John has been in
the hospital because of dizziness, blurred
vision and weakness. He is currently in Beloit Rehab Center, 1905 W Hart Rd,
Room 117, Beloit, WI, 53511. Laurie Dolezel had informed me that
their EC member Stub Hazen has had his
cancer return. It is an aggressive cancer be-ing fought with an equally aggressive chemo
treatment. He and his wife, Joyce, appreci-ate hearing from their horseshoe friends as
“they are my friends, they love me.” Cards
can be sent to Joyce and Stub Hazen,
W1085Cty HH, Eau Claire, WI 54701.
Mark Stevens has also had his cancer return. I am waiting to hear from friends or
family more details. For now cards can be sent to 39860 Pelto Rd, Marengo, WI,
54855. Dave Hughes is recovering from sur-
gery from an infection on his pitching hand.
I know there are others out there fac-ing different life challenges. Do not be afraid
to lean on your horseshoe family! The horseshoe season is just around
the corner—if the snow ever melts– so we
will be able to see the smiles and feel the
hugs of very special people.
Once again to make the award acces-
sible to more pitchers the Divisions have been altered. Division A will be determined
by year end averages of 45% or better; Di-vision B – averages between 30% - 44.99%;
Division C, less than 30%. Leaders in these
divisions after 12 events have been entered,
in alphabetical order: Division A- Rom But-
ton, Gunnar David, Ken Heinritz, John Molling, Randy Rein. Division B - Cliff Erick-
son, Jim Haupt, John Olson, Kevin Peter-son, Jerremy Wegner. Division C – Russ

WOW! What a long winter, BUT
the outdoor pitching season is about to
commence. Your executive Board met
in March and some exciting decisions
were made with regard to our Newslet-
ter. All the details are spelled out in an-
other article in this issue.
As you are choosing tournaments
that you will be pitching in this summer,
please keep in mind the World Tourna-
ment in St. George, UT, July 22 to Aug
3rd. I will have packets available with all
the info you will need to know to have
a GREAT WT experience. Rooms are
as low as $79 per night and there are
lots of campsites available. Also, on the
Do you ever thank the tournament
director for running the show? How
important is a tournament director?
Maybe a better way to ask that question
is ‘How much do you enjoy pitching
horseshoes’. No tournament director
means no tournament! Running an
event is much like taking on the role of
a servant. Willingly offering your ser-
vices for the good of the pitchers is
something to be praised. Listen to some
of the directors responsibilities: Adver-
tise or list it, apply for patches from re-
gional director, assemble
names from phone messages/e
-mails/letters, consult Natstats
for current averages, make

date days & times of the pitch-

give awards, clean up, file results with
John Secord & goes to Natstats, publish
results. This means donating hours of
time. He/she needs to be prepared to
settle disputes & be knowledgeable of
the NHPA rule book. It’s optional to
have scorekeepers or concession
stands, but this means more work. A
tournament director is a critical ingredi-
ent to the advancement of our sport.
They are to be applauded and thanked
every time they run an

they doing this for?

The thermometer read 0 degrees and the
sun was shining. A beautiful day for pitching out-doors but Jeff Gustafson decided that it might be
better to stay out of the sun so his New Years day rumble was held indoors at Beloit for the 5th time.
Sixteen people showed up. Everyone enjoyed an-other fun tournament. Here are the results:
Allen Johnson & Dave Carpenter 196 Points
Jim Huckabee & Rondi Mengelt 185 Points Jeff Gustafson & Ed Dolan 179 Points
Bruce McLinn & Charlie Goldsmith 154 Points Kevin Brekke & Walt Houck 153 Points
Skip Ramsdell and Dan Lessman 142 Points
Herman Robisch & Russ Burns 137 Points Mouse Beckius & Georgia Beebe 113 Points
Games were to 28 Points, highest point total per game, 28. Allen & Dave did not lose a game.
They reached the highest possible point total. This
event was also a benefit for the Rock County Hu-
mane Society. Kimberly Beebe, daughter of Ken and
Georgia Beebe, is a long time employee of Rock County humane Society. Kimberly and Georgia, by
using a bag raffle, 50-50 drawing and a number of checks from individuals raised a total of $846.00
which was donated to the Society. Someone com-mented that this tournament was for the dogs! Any-

Edie McKinney is resigning from her position as Hall of Fame Chairperson. Though she has en-
joyed her job, she feels someone more tech savvy
would be good for the organization. While she was
Chairlady she organized the material from former
HOF Chair, Susie Pritzlaff. Each member of the HOF committee has received a three ring binder with all
of the HOF nominations-compliments of Edie’s dedi-cation and professionalism.
The job description Edie shared follows: this
person is responsible to organize and distribute the new nomination forms to the committee; write up
the information of the HOF inductee for the State Tourney booklet; order two plaques- one for the
member and the other for the WI HOF wall in Beloit; acquire pictures for the plaques; lead the
HOF meeting held prior to the Spring meeting; cre-
ate ballots, announce winner at meeting.
If you are interested in this position, contact
our President Glenn Bogenschneider. This is an ap-pointed position. Keep in mind we are still looking
for Publicity and Membership leaders.

Bring A Pal By, Jim Haupt
Bring is the key word. The Beloit Club recently hosted a tournament designed to acquaint sandlot pitchers to the greater world of tournament horse-shoes. This unsanctioned event provided the oppor-tunity to introduce a friend to the benefits of the
NHPA. We often hear the plea, “If everybody could re-cruit just one new member our ranks would dou-ble.” OK that must be a dream, but here at Beloit it became an opportunity, a chance at greater mem-
bership. As it happened 25 pitchers brought 25 pals.
Bring a Pal doubles results:

Tom & Jim 27.0 John & Kathy 27.0

Kerry Morris is the only pitcher in this state who has an annual tournament named in his honor. The Klash with Kerry signup sheet was out at the January Deansville Rally. Who is this celebrated pitcher of Deansville? Sometimes Kerry hits the ceiling. Sometimes he doesn’t. Same deal with the stake. Kerry Morris is lately not living up to his erstwhile position as a WHPA championship class pitcher. In one way that made it easier to seed him into the top of B class. The other factor was that the Heinritz bros. expressed the desire to travel together. With just four courts, at the Deansville Barn, two traveling as one means pitch-ing the same class. Ergo: Russ Heinritz was seeded as the lowest pitcher, #8, in A along with his bro, Ken, the top, #1, seed. First game they are matched. They both pitch 21 ringers, 55%—a low game for Ken, a nice game for Russ. Darned if Ken didn’t get a few more single points Nelson’s Crossing is now a name of the past but the whole place is still there, all 4 1/2 acres, tavern, volley ball courts, and horseshoe barn to boot. The barn plays to pitchers twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the four weekend tournaments over the winter months. Its called, “JD and Me’s Place” now with pretty much the same food and libations offered. Strikes us as a nice ‘family’ bar. The last word on Kerry Morris. If one cannot have a good time pitching with him, give it up. See you at the Klash. A Friend We’ll Miss Dan David By, Jane Smith
Wisconsin Horseshoe Family has lost another icon. Dan David and his wife, Sylvia, were well known in the horseshoe world, first as pitchers then as cheerleaders for their grandkids. Dan is now join-ing other horseshoe pitchers in the next world. Dan was known for his everlasting, infectious smile and never ending repertoire of jokes. Dan spent his life in the Marshfield area where his family prospered. He joined the Navy and after serving during the Korean War, worked as a military recruiter. Dan ws also owner of the Dan-D Heating company in Marshfield. Dan was an avid sportsman enjoying fishing, hunting, bowling, horseshoes and dartball. He was truly a family man spending time with his kids, grandkids and great grandkids on the boat and pon-toon. Yard games were a constant in the David fami-ly. We will miss et another great man. Our sympa-thy to the David family.

The purpose of this message is to talk about qualifying events for the World Tournament.
As you know, you need 4 sanctioned events posted on your Natstats record within the past twelve
months from the WT deadline date of May 16th. These events can be either sanctioned leagues
(minimum of 400 shoes pitched), or sanctioned
tournaments (minimum 100 shoes pitched). First I want to talk about what constitutes a
sanctioned tournament. I started a forum string re-cently to see what the opinions were of those who
read the forum. There was a lively discussion that
broke out, and it seemed that the general consensus was that the minimum number of players should be
at least two. Every year there are folks who need one or
two "last minute" qualifying events to make the mini-mum requirement for the WT. We have a few re-
minders for what exactly is a legitimate "open" sanc-
tioned tournament. In the requirements of the RGS book (page 21), it clearly outlines what the duties of
a tournament director are. It is the Regional Director's main responsibil-
ity to make sure that all sanctioned tournaments are conducted within the rules and guidelines of the
NHPA. This ensures the integrity of our sanctioning
system, and guarantees that NHPA sanctioned
events are legitimate.
With all this said, there is one last thing that is needed to be said to all tournament direc-
tors. Every year we have an issue with the folks who
pitch a qualifying event close to the deadline for world. Let's say that there is a tournament in
Sometown, USA on May 11th....well within the 12
month limit for sanctioned events. If the TD does
not submit those results promptly, that player will not have the required event on their record.
World Tournament Qualifying Jerry LaBrosse, NHPA VP
be prepared by having your measuring tools and your file with you, and make sure that, if you have a
hook, it is within the NHPA specs. Other things that will be checked are your pitching shirt with your
name and state clearly written on the back of it and
the shoes on your feet, so wear those shoes (no open toes) and that shirt to check in.
Carefully read the front page of the World Tournament schedule and check your pitching times
and days. Good luck to all of you!

Rudy reports this event as most entertaining in recent time. Arriving at the D’ Barn plenty early we found no action on the courts. All pitchers on a break watching the Badgers playing round ball. The B class had two games to go. Bun Carley, eventual winner, brought along his latest wood projects, one a football, the other a bas-ket ball both hollow pieces showing a nice shiny wood grain. How does he make those things? Build-ing a schooner in a bottle would be easier. In the earlier class, already posted, we saw the bottom seed doubling his entry average. Jerry Loose wins the class going away. Another competitor, Denis Capener played today. He must be feeling OK in spite of his infirmities. The first thing you will do, officially, when
you are at the World Tournament is to check in and
to have your horseshoes checked. Before you leave
home, put your NHPA card in your horseshoe bag or box (laminating it is a good idea!)
Your horseshoes will be checked for weight and measurements. Along with your horseshoes,

Jim O’Loughlin lost his wife to cancer recently. He sent the following to express his appreciation of his horseshoe family: My brothers in the horseshoe world,
I can't thank you enough for your cards and phone calls. You can't imagine how wonderful that makes one feel. This life of ours is so short that one forgets that. Horseshoe is not only a game but one does develop a friendship along the way. That's the beautiful part of playing the game of horseshoe. Thank you all again for helping me get through this loss.

There is an excellent ten page history of the
Beloit horseshoe club on their club web page. Earl Paulson said this was written about ten years ago.
Some of the highlights of the history will be men-
tioned in this article.
Horseshoe pitching has long been a popular sport in Beloit. There was a time when there were
courts all over the city and families played horse-
shoes in their backyards. Several horseshoe enthusi-asts built regulation courts in their yards and invited
players out of town to compete with one another. In
the 1950’s courts were built in a public park. These
eventually were vandalized. In 1967, Don Goldsmith
and his father built 4 regulation clay courts and were used every Tuesday evenings and Saturday after-
noons. There was no organized league but every fall an annual doubles tournament was held.
In 1980 a new crop of pitchers joined the old-timers and the Beloit Horseshoe Club was formed.
In 1985, the league was sanctioned and remains so
today. In 1987, Bud Renley began clearing an area where nine cement courts were constructed – just a
week before their first tournament. The courts are presently known as “Renley Courts.”
In 1989 Beloit held its first State tournament. This came about with the closing of the Pitchin Pal-
ace in Sturtevant. A total of 13 courts were pre-
pared and because the Club had an excellent reputa-tion of hosting tournament also hosted the State
event in 1992, 1995, 2001 and 2005. The Beloit Club inherited an international
flavor to tournaments with the hosting of the Team
World event. Many top percentage pitchers have pitched in this event where perfect games have been
a pleasure to watch. Beloit has rented the Telfer
Park ice arena during the month of May to host the
WI State Doubles, WI Club team, Team World, and Encore tournaments. These events need more
courts so the Beloit club sets up 24 courts for the
month of horseshoe pitching. Beloit has since built six indoor courts so
year around pitching is possible. They are a very in-
novative group and do everything possible to pro-
mote the game of horseshoes. Two such events are
a couple years old and are the product of master-mind, Jimmy Paulson. He has developed and promot-
ed Bring a Pal and Bring a Junior tournaments in or-der to increase the WHPA membership. Beloit also
has a variety of league pitching year around every day of the week! Such a group of dedicated horse-
shoe people!
The Beloit Club has been recognized by the NHPA in receiving the 1997 Achievement Award at
the World Tournament in Kitchener, ONT, Canada. In 2000, World Tournament in Bismarck, ND, Red
Ferguson received the NHPA Achievement Award. Earl Paulson received the WHPA President’s Award
in 1998.
If you have not had opportunity to visit and pitch in the Beloit facility, add it to your bucket list. It will
be a memorable experience.
