In the futuristic sci-fi blockbuster I, Robot, Will Smith plays a detective investigating a homicide. Along the way, he gets help from an unlikely ally – the man whose death he’s investigating.

The victim was a scientist. He knew his life was about to end. In an effort to help solve the mystery of his own death, he left behind a hologram of himself. The hologram interacted with Smith’s character, passing along vital clues for the investigation.

But a hologram isn’t the same as a person. Sometimes the conversation was painfully basic.

More than once, Smith’s character asked the hologram something complex. Something the hologram had not been programmed to answer. The hologram replied the same way each time.
