lUE FARMER: OCTOBER 6, 1909 MALE HELP WANTED REAL ESTATE BARGAINS MISCELLANEOUS - ,. . WANTS FOR SALE SA WIRELESS is' r! Novelized by Thompson Buchanan From the Successful Play of the Same Name 1 ! By WINCIifcLL SMITH, FREDERIC and PAUL ARMSTRONG "It's no use, I feur, boy,'' he . said Boftly. "They are gone. That's the way It Is at sea. You've done all you could, boy. Make a full report and transcription for me. If. you should get another call send for me at once." ' Turning, the old seaman opened the door of the wireless room to fight his way along the. deck ' to the lookout's position. Inside the room young Har- ling dropped into a chair before his Instrument and. bending over, burled his head in his hand. Suddenly he sat up straight, tense in every nerve and muscle. What was that? Was it his Imagination playing tricks again? No. He could not be mistaken. . There it was again. He looked, listened, then Bjrang to his feet, with a shriek at joy, for the little recorder n front of him began again slowly, as though tired, to click. "A- -A A-- A." " He read it off aloud, with regret. "Just some battleship " he said bit- terly to himself. "That's the navy call." Next his face lighted, and he laughed aloud hysterically, for It was the navy call, but It came from the Irvessa. Im- patiently the operator seized, the tele-- , phone. "Captain, captain," he shrieked, "I've got the Irvessa again, sir! Not Pinck-ne- y this time. There's a man at the key. - We can get something from this one. He can't send much, but he's all there with his nerve." , - He dropped e telephone again as the receiver be6an to click: ' "Yacht Irvessa aground on reef . Po- sition unknown, but within thirty miles of you getting this message To indi- cate relative position storm center now passing directly northeast of us. Heav- iest lightning northeast by east. .Can you make out our position?" " j . . The captain had the wire- less room by the time the message was delivered.-- - "Tell him," exclaimed . the officer, "we can mftke out his probable t posi- tion. ' We are steering southwest by west to find him. Ask him how long he can last." 1 ; - The answer to the message came back slowly, with every dot and dash absolutely, distinct: "Half an hour." , "Tell him," commanded the captain, 4we are twenty miles away prcjbably and can't make better than 12 Iknots an hour in this storm." A terrific flash of lightning for one . blinding Instant Ut up the mountain- ous' waste of waves outside." v: "Ask him where that lightning was,' shouted the officer. - "TBBt by north," the receiver clicked 1)ack. ' In another minute the course of the ship had been changed one point to the southward, and all this while the receiver slowly but steadily clicked out guiding news.. - We hav two boats. Both boats left yacht ten minutes ago during break in communication with you. They seem understand direction you coming. First boat making for you. . Look , for its lights." ' An expression of admiration came on the face of the old seaman. "Then that fellow must have stayed behind to guide us and save the people In the boat, he exclaimed. ? " Ask him tiow many are with him." v ' Harling translated the quick answer: "One. He 1b below. Stayed with me to ' rnn dynamo. We can give direc- tions as long as hold together. That last lightning flash due north." , 'Well,- he's got his nerve, all right,' exclaimed the officer, with admiration. "We've got to save that fellow.' v The receiver was stitt pounding away: "Both boats got away safely. Plnckney, Mrs. Durant, in first; also Miss Durant, I believe. Make every effort to save them." . The skilled operator quickly cut 'off part of the current, but ' the mes- sage continued uninterrupted. Harling I MADE $50,000 in five years In the mall order business began with 5. "Make him tell where be is and who he is at eaeev 111 be with you." tfThe receiver: had begun to click again wildly, and Harling, gripping the . table to keep himself . steady, listened with disgust, for the sending now was that of a man absolutely insane from ar. ;.'.'.!-- '".'.- - I"Helpl Help! For God's sake Help s ! Was all the receiver clicked. - At last it stopped a moment and ie Mongolian . operator managed to it in. ,v. '.' "Send name and position, he pound- - 7i fiercely. "Send position. Keep erve. Send position." . .. i - He stopped, grasping the table and aiting anxiously. the receiver click- - 41 wildly. .y?. : I "The. f ooi!" gasped Harling. "The dirty cowardt Sending that way at Such a time!" ;. ' j He seized the . key and drove out fiercely his command: ; ; 1 position." , V ,v - '. i For reply ' the receiver clicked back In the same rattled way: . . "Yacli Irvessa breaking upon reef. For God's sake help us! Will pay any reward if you will, save us at once! Help us quick, for God's sake!" The rage of the operator had risen. The- - thought of lives resting on the work of the coward was awful. Frederic Thompson.' AH Rights Reserved. OThe fool!" he gasped. "If he's breaking up, why' is he wasting time that way?" And then his own message volleyed out into the night: "What Teef ? Send position Quick!" In panicky clicks' the answer came back. It was the same idiotic raving of a fear crazed man. ' "IH reward you. I am B. H. Pinck-ne-y and rich.. Have thirty on board. Will reward handsomely." x Again Harling drove out the short oemana xor ice yuuiuon 41X tue wreck- ed yacbi. Then, as. he waited, for re- ply, he seized the captain's telephone a second time. t . . ,' . "It's the yacht Irvessa, captain. She reports- going to pieces. There's a frightened fool - at - the key-- B. ' H. Pinckney.v Can't even get his position. I'm doing my best, sir, but Pinckney's lost his nerve completely. , If they, had a man at the keyj we might get some thing." T ' T .,.-.- . ' f He hung up the phone to listen In disgust and despair to - Pinckney's ravings driven out through tbq storm. There was.no chance for Harling to send. The man at the Irvessa ; key kept pounding, 'with no. sense to his messages. As the Mongolian operator waited for a break to cut in the cap- tain, driven by the force of the' wind, fairly burst : into the little wireless room. f -- v?5 . , Well," he snapped, "what is'It now? Have , you got the position of the Ir- vessa?" ', ..i'wl rf'tV-L- ; ;::'. Harling shook his head In disgust ; "I can hardly make out what he says, captain. His sending Is awful. He's a good operator, too, I believe, only he's lost. hls- - nerve completely. But as nearly as I can make out" he listened a moment anxiously "it's a little better now. He says Irvessa, bound for New York from Porto Kico, struck reef two hours ago. Don't know where." V v - "Yes, yes, I understand broke in the captain impatiently. , "But can't he give us any. idea of his course?. Can- - 1- - J I He vcUeyed out' into the lUgM "a message of 'Cheer, .v - dada reef Is the only charted reef within 200 miles of our present posi- tion. Could- - you send 200 miles to- night?' - - Harling shook his head. "I don't think we could, sir. And 200 mdes for a yacht would be Impos- sible. Wait a minute." He sprang to the key again and with firm, emphatic strokes, drove an Im- perative message. ' ' , : "What's that?" asked the captain. "I asked for bis radius of communi- cation how far he could send,"; ex- plained Harling. ' He waited a moment, and then the receiver began again its nervous, frightened clicking; The . face of the listening operator brightened., x x "Sixty miles," he exclaimed, translat- ing the clicks. ' "Why, we must 'be within forty miles to get him at all tonight. But we are going toward hlm. i We might now be within thirty ' - - miles." - s The captain shook his head. ' v "Yes, but wherer he said. "1ft may be in any position. Anywhere within a forty mile reach, ahead or on either beam, ' and tonight we can scarcely see a quarter mile with the search light.'..- -. q '.,;;:. '.:-- :-- :,! -- ; - Again the receiver began a wild tattoo. The light went out of Har-llng- 's face as he listened. Then he turned almost piteously to the captain. "He says they're breaking up, sir. For God's sake" - (The clicking stopped suddenly. The two men In the wireless room looked at each other, and slowly each saw the horror grow In the eyes of the other. They waited with blanched faces. The receiver stayed still. ; i ' "They're gone," said the, captain soray at last, and outside the wlrelest room the wind - roared triumphantly, while the big waves pitched the ship about In the teeth of the gale. , .; 'Harling dropped back Into a chair. "Gone!" he muttered stupidly. "Gone!" And then, to, his plain imag- ination, there came the picture of the yacht breaking np and the thirty going down to death in the sea.. Perhaps they might be closer; they might be almost on them. Perhaps there was still time. And then the thought, "Sup- pose there are women, too, on board," came to the young operator. " Harling sprang to his feet 1 "No, noT he yelled loud above the storm. , "They shan't be gone! We Witt save them!" . He sprang to the key and desperate- ly, rebelliously, volleyed out into the night a message of cheer and hope.. : f We're coming.- We'll save yon yet. Where are you? Hang on!" ? "It's no use, I feur, boy,'' he . saidBoftly. "They are gone. That's theway It Is at sea. You've done all youcould, boy. Make a full report andtranscription for me. If. you should getanother call send for me at once." '

Turning, the old seaman opened thedoor of the wireless room to fight hisway along the. deck ' to the lookout'sposition. Inside the room young Har-

ling dropped into a chair before hisInstrument and. bending over, burledhis head in his hand.

Suddenly he sat up straight, tense inevery nerve and muscle. What wasthat? Was it his Imagination playingtricks again? No. He could not bemistaken. . There it was again.

He looked, listened, then Bjrang tohis feet, with a shriek at joy, for thelittle recorder n front of him beganagain slowly, as though tired, to click.

"A- -A A-- A.""

He read it off aloud, with regret."Just some battleship " he said bit-

terly to himself. "That's the navycall."

Next his face lighted, and he laughedaloud hysterically, for It was the navycall, but It came from the Irvessa. Im-

patiently the operator seized, the tele-- ,phone.

"Captain, captain," he shrieked, "I'vegot the Irvessa again, sir! Not Pinck-ne-y

this time. There's a man at thekey. - We can get something from thisone. He can't send much, but he's allthere with his nerve." ,

-

He dropped e telephone again asthe receiver be6an to click: '

"Yacht Irvessa aground on reef . Po-

sition unknown, but within thirty milesof you getting this message To indi-cate relative position storm center nowpassing directly northeast of us. Heav-iest lightning northeast by east. .Canyou make out our position?" " j. . The captain had the wire-less room by the time the message wasdelivered.-- -

"Tell him," exclaimed . the officer,"we can mftke out his probable t posi-tion. ' We are steering southwest bywest to find him. Ask him how longhe can last." 1

;- The answer to the message came

back slowly, with every dot and dashabsolutely, distinct:

"Half an hour.", "Tell him," commanded the captain,4we are twenty miles away prcjbablyand can't make better than 12 Iknotsan hour in this storm."

A terrific flash of lightning for one. blinding Instant Ut up the mountain-ous' waste of waves outside." v:

"Ask him where that lightning was,'shouted the officer. -

"TBBt by north," the receiver clicked1)ack. '

In another minute the course of theship had been changed one point tothe southward, and all this while thereceiver slowly but steadily clickedout guiding news..

- We hav two boats. Both boats leftyacht ten minutes ago during break incommunication with you. They seemunderstand direction you coming. Firstboat making for you. . Look , for itslights."' An expression of admiration came onthe face of the old seaman.

"Then that fellow must have stayedbehind to guide us and save the peopleIn the boat, he exclaimed. ? "Ask himtiow many are with him." v

' Harling translated the quick answer:"One. He 1b below. Stayed with me

to ' rnn dynamo. We can give direc-tions as long as hold together. Thatlast lightning flash due north." ,

'Well,- he's got his nerve, all right,'exclaimed the officer, with admiration."We've got to save that fellow.' v

The receiver was stitt poundingaway: "Both boats got away safely.Plnckney, Mrs. Durant, in first; alsoMiss Durant, I believe. Make everyeffort to save them.". The skilled operator quickly cut 'offpart of the current, but ' the mes-sage continued uninterrupted. Harling

Jpp la the little'' wireless room, thehighest point on the ship, Harling, theyoung operator, clung to his berth andwandered what was going to happen.Iftwas his second trip to sea and hisfigat big storm, so no wonder the youngoperator- - felt the- - thrill : of the strug-gt- e

For hours the pitching of the ship,timed Irregularly to the roaring driveof the storm, had held the wirelessfnan fast at his post. It was now pastmidnight and with little chance ofany abatement before dawn. ;i ;

J Harling' nerves were on edge as heclang to his berth, .wide 'eyed, alert,Awaiting, listening to the faintest cdickthat might be the forerunner to tell of

. disaster and death. Half a dozen timeshis strained nerves had brought himstruggling from his berth to receivesuch a message, only to And his imag-ination had been playing tricks withhis fear. f !, ' '

Suddenly there came from the In-

strument clicks so sharp, 80 distinctand yet, so harried that the young fel-low sprang from the berth and fctum- -,

bled to the table, sure now that at lastsomething was coming. .. '

Again the instrument clicked' wildly. To the- earfr of the strained operator itbrought a chill, for he knew it wasthe sending of some one wild withfear. Anxiously, impatiently, he lis-tened. At first he could make out

' nothing. t , '1 "They're crazy!" he exclaimed ' tohimself. ' "What's . the matter withthem? They're crazy!" .

.wild rattle of the receiver stop-ped, and Harling seized his own key.

'What's Wrong? Don't be a fool.Keep your nerves. Send sense."' The touch of the key had broughthim thoroughly to himself. His nerve

, tightened and his bead grew cool as hej drove his message fiercely out Into the

storm, v , . ,1

He paused, , listening eagerly, andagain the receiver began to click, al--'

most as wildly, as Insanely, as before.Only the skilled operator could, makeout "C Q D." . ;..

MA distress signal!" he gasped, "H?s" 'come."

Again the Mongolian's wireless oper-erat- or

seized his key and drove opthis answer into the night. ; ' ;.,

As be waited he! seized the tele--tphone connected direct with, the eap-- ;tain's stateroom.,, ; V .. '

"Captain, have just received a dis-tress signal!", he shouted. "Have sentthem , our position in course, but thefool seemed to have lost his nerve.Have not been able to get anythingfrom him yet"?

The answer of the captain cameback cool and sharp.

"Make him tell where be is and whohe is at eaeev 111 be with you."tfThe receiver: had begun to click

again wildly, and Harling, gripping the. table to keep himself . steady, listenedwith disgust, for the sending now wasthat of a man absolutely insane from

' the receiver clicked backIn the same rattled way: . .

"Yacli Irvessa breaking upon reef. For God's sake help us! Will pay anyreward if you will, save us at once!Help us quick, for God's sake!"

The rage of the operator had risen.The- - thought of lives resting on thework of the coward was awful.

Frederic Thompson.' AH Rights Reserved.

OThe fool!" he gasped. "If he'sbreaking up, why' is he wasting timethat way?" And then his own messagevolleyed out into the night:

"What Teef ? Send position Quick!"In panicky clicks' the answer came

back. It was the same idiotic ravingof a fear crazed man. '

"IH reward you. I am B. H. Pinck-ne-y

and rich.. Have thirty on board. Will reward handsomely."

x Again Harling drove out the shortoemana xor ice yuuiuon 41X tue wreck-ed yacbi. Then, as. he waited, for re-

ply, he seized the captain's telephone asecond time. t . . ,' .

"It's the yacht Irvessa, captain. Shereports- going to pieces. There's afrightened fool - at - the key-- B. ' H.Pinckney.v Can't even get his position.I'm doing my best, sir, but Pinckney'slost his nerve completely. , If they, hada man at the keyj we might get something." T ' T .,.-.- . '

f He hung up the phone to listen Indisgust and despair to - Pinckney'sravings driven out through tbq storm. There was.no chance for Harling tosend. The man at the Irvessa ; keykept pounding, 'with no. sense to hismessages. As the Mongolian operatorwaited for a break to cut in the cap-tain, driven by the force of the' wind, fairly burst : into the little wirelessroom. f

,

Well," he snapped, "what is'It now?Have , you got the position of the Ir-vessa?" ', ..i'wl rf'tV-L- ; ;::'.

Harling shook his head In disgust ;"I can hardly make out what he

says, captain. His sending Is awful. He's a good operator, too, I believe, only he's lost. hls-- nerve completely. But as nearly as I can make out" helistened a moment anxiously "it's alittle better now. He says Irvessa, bound for New York from Porto Kico, struck reef two hours ago. Don'tknow where." V v -

"Yes, yes, I understand broke inthe captain impatiently. , "But can't hegive us any. idea of his course?. Can--

He vcUeyed out' into the lUgM "a messageof 'Cheer, .v -

dada reef Is the only charted reefwithin 200 miles of our present posi-tion. Could- - you send 200 miles to-

night?' - -

Harling shook his head."I don't think we could, sir. And

200 mdes for a yacht would be Impos-sible. Wait a minute."

He sprang to the key again and withfirm, emphatic strokes, drove an Im-

perative message. ' ', :

"What's that?" asked the captain."I asked for bis radius of communi-

cation how far he could send,"; ex-

plained Harling.' He waited a moment,

and then the receiver began again itsnervous, frightened clicking;

The . face of the listening operatorbrightened., x

x

"Sixty miles," he exclaimed, translat-ing the clicks. ' "Why, we must 'bewithin forty miles to get him at alltonight. But we are going towardhlm. i We might now be within thirty

' - -miles." - sThe captain shook his head. ' v

"Yes, but wherer he said. "1ft maybe in any position. Anywhere withina forty mile reach, ahead or on eitherbeam, ' and tonight we can scarcelysee a quarter mile with the searchlight.'..- -. q '.,;;:. '.:-- :--

:,! --; -

Again the receiver began a wildtattoo. The light went out of Har-llng- 's

face as he listened. Then heturned almost piteously to the captain.

"He says they're breaking up, sir.For God's sake" -

(The clicking stopped suddenly. Thetwo men In the wireless room lookedat each other, and slowly each saw thehorror grow In the eyes of the other. They waited with blanched faces. Thereceiver stayed still. ; i '

"They're gone," said the, captainsoray at last, and outside the wlrelestroom the wind - roared triumphantly,while the big waves pitched the shipabout In the teeth of the gale. , .;

'Harling dropped back Into a chair."Gone!" he muttered stupidly.

"Gone!" And then, to, his plain imag-ination, there came the picture of theyacht breaking np and the thirty goingdown to death in the sea.. Perhapsthey might be closer; they might bealmost on them. Perhaps there wasstill time. And then the thought, "Sup-pose there are women, too, on board,"came to the young operator. "

Harling sprang to his feet 1

"No, noT he yelled loud above thestorm. , "They shan't be gone! WeWitt save them!" .

He sprang to the key and desperate-ly, rebelliously, volleyed out into thenight a message of cheer and hope.. :

fWe're coming.- We'll save yon yet.Where are you? Hang on!" ?

The captain laid his hand gently onthe young fellow's shoulder.

'augbed joyously., . To be Continued.)
