JENNIFER ROTHSCHILD - WALKING BY FAITH: LESSONS LEARNED IN THE DARK (begins January 11, 2012)Jennifer Rothschild knows not everyone sees 20/20. Although Jennifer is physically blind, God has taught her to see that living a life based on faith rather than sight requires us to look at our situations through a lens that filters out what is seen and, instead, focuses on what is unseen -- those things that are eternal. This study contrasts the evidences of walking by faith and walking by sight and encourages participants to take risks, give God control, persevere through hardship, receive God's gifts, be guided by the Truth rather than feelings, and seek God.Leader: Jeanne StrineTime: 6:30 – 8:00 pmPlace: Lighthouse Lounge

Words of encouragement can always be found in the Bible, but He gave each of us the ability to console and encourage, as well. God is always with us, and we're all in this thing together. So, let's encourage one another along the way! Are you ready to give and receive encouragement? STAYING CONNECTED THROUGH PRAYER ~by Ellie Grimm

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His Will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of Him." 1 John 5: 14-15

CONFIDENCE IN APPROACHING GODThank God for hearing our prayers and responding "according to His Will."

Heavenly Father, bless our Synod, for programs that reach out to countries and areas that do not have the Gospel, for being compassionate during floods, earthquakes and disasters. With our prayers and contributions, the needed help can accomplish what we alone cannot do. Be with Pastor Rudowske and family, and Katie Bury, in Mission Field, bless them, keep them safe and healthy.

Dear Lord, You have given us this good land and been generous with supplying ample food, honest industries to employ, truthful education and an honorable way of life. Times are now stressful. We implore you to save our nation from violence, discord and confusion. Raise up leaders who will have a spirit of wisdom, rather than pride and arrogance, hearts that consider the welfare of all citizens, rich and poor alike, and a staunchness to present bills for us to live a godly life in peace and harmony. Give them courage to apply wisdom to cease wars in the Mid-East and allow our servicemen to return home to their families.

Almighty Father, Your pure Word has been proclaimed from the pulpit and school for over 100 years. You have richly blessed us. Many souls have been nurtured, many hearts strengthened by the Divine Truth and remained steadfast by Your Grace. You have also blessed each servant with special talents and treasures. Grant us the ability to show thanks and praise to use our gifts to Your Honor and Glory. We also implore You to turn the hearts of all who have forsaken the faith, to turn again to You, their Shepherd who will lead them to hold fast to the hope of Christ their Savior. We also pray that the Holy Spirit will imbue us with a spiritual renewal for all your servants. By your guidance deliver us from impenitence, ask for forgiveness, teach us to be reconciled to one another, keep our tongue from evil and deceit, cleanse our thoughts by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, grant us true humility, give us a compassionate heart and love for each other. Lord, we have confidence that with Your divine help, it is Your Will, You can invigorate our worship and servanthood, live in peace and Glorify Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

"Live as children of light, for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth and find out what pleases the Lord." Ephesians 5:8-9 "You are the light of the world." Matthew 5:14

Mission Trip to Arkansas

This past Summer 25 High School students from Trinity and 2 adults went on a 5 day mission trip to Marvell Arkansas, a small town 3 hours outside of Little Rock. While there many of the youth had experiences that changed not only their outlook on life, but their life itself.

While on the trip the youth helped clean up after a disastrous flood that left thousands of people without homes or with damage so bad they could not afford to fix themselves. The water level in some area rose up to 30 ft! They painted houses, cleaned barns, re-built foundations, and most importantly, shared God's love with those around. Along with the Trinity group were a group from Austin Texas and Peoria Illinois. These groups formed bonds that have lasted well beyond this short trip.

During the trip the youth had 4 different but important jobs. One group helped with flood damage, one with youth in a troubled area, loving them even when the kids didn't want to be loved, one with older, high school aged youth, playing football and the values of working together, and one visiting those in a nursing home. All of the experiences helped shape the trip and the experience these young people had.

The one experience everyone will remember happened the night before we were to leave. A student from Texas, that everyone had become close with, suddenly started having medical problems. As the ambulance rushed her to the hospital and as a van of us adults rushed after, the rest of the group stayed. They stayed and prayed. For hours they prayed asking God to watch over her and as we returned at 3:30am, some were still waiting up to let this young lady know just how happy they were she was ok. Such an amazing moment to see God work in such a BIG and POWERFUL way.

Some students took from the trip that they are very blessed in the lives they live. Some took that they really love helping others. But all of them took away the love that Jesus has for each and every person here on earth and that no matter what the circumstances are that our faith in God will help us persevere throughout all of life's struggles.

Trinity in MissionOne of Trinity's core values is outreach. We express this value with these words: In the Great Commission our Lord has called us to go and make disciples of all nations. He has also commissioned us to be His witness. In faithfulness to the Lord's Great Commission we are engaged in Christian missions in our community and the world. This section of the Connected is set aside to share mission stories of Trinity members with the goal of encouraging all of us to go and make disciples. If you have a story to share, please contact Pastor Roth.

Hopefully, praying for these missions on a weekly basiswill help us to stay 'Mission Minded'. 01/01/2012-01/07/2012—Trinity Community Dinners

The Cantor ColumnReflections on Liturgy and Music

Epiphany is upon us. In this season when we think of the Magi and the gifts they brought, so too has the music ministry received a great gift! Many thanks to Pastor Roth and Mark Freudenburg for the preparation and construction of new handbell tables. These tables, designed to fit over the south balcony back pews, will now easily allow space for bells and bell ringers in the sanctuary.

Bells have long been associated with Christian worship. Traveling missionaries and early Celts carrying bells eventually developed into the familiar large church tower bells. Even Martin Luther spoke about the use of bells to call people to prayer. Smaller bells were used in processions, the singing of psalms, or to practice the ringing pattern of larger bells without the loud disturbance.

Advocates of handbells in worship today suggest handbells are best used to lead and participate in the liturgical worship of the people. Whereas handbell performances often require many highly-skilled ringers, using handbells effectively to enhance the worship service can be done simply and well within the capabilities of anyone interested in participating.

Is this sounding interesting to you or someone you know? Then mark your calendar for a Handbell Workshop on Saturday, January 21 9:30a-12n in the school music room. If you are starting at the very beginning, with little to no musical background come at 9:30a. We'll learn the basics we need to know about music. Then all are welcome to join for a 30-minute refreshment fellowship time at 10:30a and we'll pick it up again at 11a working together to learn some music we could offer in a future service. If you have any questions or thoughts please share them with me at [email protected]. I hope to see you there!

Swiftly winging, angels singing, bells are ringing, tidings bringing;Christ the child is Lord of all! Christ the child is Lord of all! LSB 393

Listening Matters

We all listen daily, but we need to be sure we are truly hearing and understanding what is going on around us. Listening is not just hearing.

In this fast paced world, we are usually multi-tasking even when others are trying to tell us something. We cannot truly hear and understand what we are being told if we do not give all of our attention to the person we are speaking with. There are many parts to a conversation that do not include the actual words that are being said. Body language, facial expression, and tone of voice can all indicate a lot about a conversation.

Listening is not only used to understand what someone is saying, but also to show the other person you care. If we are not focused on who we are talking with, the listener may think that we do not care. The lack of support can really hurt someone especially when they are going through a struggle in their life.

Listening is very important in the training for Stephen Ministers at Trinity. The training course focuses on listening. When you are going through a struggle in life your feelings need to be shared and validated. It is okay to be angry, sad, and mad. We all feel hurt sometimes and our Stephen Ministers have been trained to help someone walk through their pain. Trinity's Stephen Ministers agree to take the time to make their Care Receiver a priority. Weekly meetings or phone calls take place between Stephen Ministers and Care Receivers to support the Care Receiver during their struggle.

When you or someone you know is going through a struggle and need someone to listen, please contact Debby Miskill at 269-428-0727. Trinity's Stephen Ministers are trained and ready to be that listening ear that you need to help you through your struggle.

YEAR 2012 WISE DECISIONS AND ACTIONS ~Ellie Grimm

"Therefore everyone who hears these Words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wiseman who built his house on THE ROCK. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the windsblew and beat against house, yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on THE ROCK."Matthew 7:24-27

God has granted us a new beginning, new opportunities, wisdom to construct, or to reconstruct our daily life. Trinity Lutheran Church was built on THE ROCK and God has abundantly blessed us for over 100 years. He never withheld His Grace, His forgiveness, His protection or His daily showers of blessings. "Greater love has no one than this, that He lay down His Life for His friends." John 15:13

God gave us the gift of faith and we are responsible to make wise decisions and take action.

Responding to His Love for us, we as a faithful Trinity Family should honor Him, faithfully attend services to receive His forgiveness and blessings, join a Bible Study group, pray for the church, and all of Family, and learn to absorb His Love for us. Each of us in the Family is blessed with talents, time, and treasures that He wants us to share and use to His Glory. God works through us to accomplish His plans for the people on earth. On a daily basis God is "for US" and gives us all we need. How have we responded? Could we do better? The ball is in our court!

When we put God and His Word first in our lives, God will supply our daily needs. Simple, easy? No!

"I can't do it" – I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Phil. 4:13

"I'm no able" – "having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." 2 Cor. 9:8

"I'm afraid" – "I have not given you a spirit of fear but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline" 1 Tim. 1:7

"It's impossible" – "What's impossible with men is possible with God." Luke 18:27

Take action and make a wise decision to begin with fervent prayer. (Psalms) Ask God to lead you. ("It is the Lord who helps me" Isaiah 50:9) Through earnest prayer the Holy Spirit can make this a reality by His divine guidance, our lives can become a Hymn of Praise to God. Keep praying, don't give up. God may come in gentle whispers, you may feel a tug at your heart to volunteer to serve in church, or join a Bible Study. God will bless every effort as you draw closer to Him. May your New Year be Blessed.

"Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion. How gracious He will be when you cry for help! As soon as He hears He will answer you." Isaiah 30:18-19

"In the same way the Spirit helps us through our weakness." Romans 8:26
