Sassi, Lou: Basic Scenery for Model Railroaders, 2nd edition, Kalmbach Books, 2014, 95 pag-es, $19.99 I enjoyed the legendary Mr. Sassi’s scenery course at the 2014 K.C. Narrow Gauge Meet. I thought he was really charming, and I bought his book. In his introduction, Mr. Sassi expresses admiration for Dave Frary’s book “How to Build Real-istic Model Railroad Scenery”, 2005, 3rd edition, Kalmbach, and I humbly, thoroughly concur! Mr. Sassi’s volume was clearly written to provide original vignettes of several items of likely interest to model railroaders. Evolving methods of creation of a new train table are explained. Ground cover as” ground goop” is extensively discussed and illustrated. Construction of trees and forests is addressed and building up the forest floor is helpfully de-scribed. Rock formations, wetlands and a millpond and stream are described and addressed. I wish Mr. Sassi had included Bragdon castings as well. Stonewall construction and farm fields are written up. Building dirt, gravel and concrete roads is described. (I would like to note that Paul Scoles has discovered the virtue of garden sand for road construction.) The chapter on telegraph and utility poles is the best I have ever seen, but I personally dislike use of sewing thread for stringing lines. (For those of us who truly feel compelled to provide lines, I respectfully suggest use of fishing line. It’s expensive but much stronger.) A chapter on grade crossings includes some handy approaches, but I wish Mr. Sassi had helped us to form grade crossings across curved track. The last chapter. “Details Make a Difference” provides a wealth of useful tidbits. The book is not intended to provide a comprehensive text on benchtop scenery. Rather, it offers a series of articles by a distinguished model railroader on several selected topics. Another current scenery book, “Building Scenery with Paul Scoles” (2012, Carsten’s Publica-tions) is also helpful, at least to me. Each provides terrific illustrations. Dave Jacobs MMR

Guys and Gals Greetings and welcome to Spring in Kansas City. Wanted to update you all on upcoming events and Train Related Activities. First: Next weekend is Railroad Days in Osawatomie Kansas. Last year we had a nice group run the 4 x 8 lay-out at the Osawatomie Museum and this year we will set up the layout at the Osawatomie Auditorium in Downtown Osawatomie. Dan Hartman and I will take the layout down Friday night. Saturday Cliff Manning, Bob Agne, Roy Inman, Dan and I will be around to answer questions about S Gauge, hand out information on the upcoming NASG Convention in KC and run trains. If any of you are in the area please drop by Saturday the 25th. Next: The Union Station Model Railroad Display continues to run in the Power and Light Gallery. Ted and Mike run the operation and coordinate volunteers. If you haven't been by lately(like me) drop by and visit the layout which includes S Gauge! The entire display of all the Gauges will be featured as one of the "Field Trips" along with the St. Joe Stockyards during the NASG Convention the first full week of August. Fred Hauser has continued to provide his expertise in repairing S Gauge Trains, but there is always track to be cleaned etc. at the Station. If you are not a Union Station Volunteer check it out. If you need more information contact Roy Inman or myself. Third: As most of you are aware the last two years I have held an Open House and Swap Meet with Lunch at my office the CORKHOUSE in downtown KCK. This year I am going to skip our first of June event. Instead there will be an Open House, Cocktail Hour(actually 2 hrs) and a How to Clinic as part of the NASG Conven-tion on Friday Night August 7th. With the Trading Room closing at 6:30 on Friday night at the Convention, we have scheduled an evening in KCK as a fun activity. There will be appetizers and drinks available. The ap-petizers are courtesy of my wife and me, while the drinks will be reasonably priced, especially when compared to hotel prices. There will be at least two operating layouts set up in my building, which celebrates it's 100 year anniversary this year. If the weather permits, we will have drinks and food on the back patio. If it is un-bearably hot or rainy, we will adjourn to the air conditioned comfort of the upstairs lounge and conference room. Everyone will be welcome Friday night, so I hope many of you and spouses can join us. Paul Stevens will be doing a clinic onsite. The Clinic will feature his knowledge and expertise in stretching American Flyer Passenger Cars. I am sure we can get Paul to discuss other topics as well! Fourth: If you haven't joined NASG and registered for the NASG Convention August 5-8th now is the time. Clinics are coming together, layout tours are being arranged, and most of the planning has taken place so that you all can share in a National Convention here in KC. (the first one in more than 25 years) I have scanned the info on the Convention from the March-April Dispatch and for those of you too lazy to go to the website a copy of the registration forms. Please support this great event. Finally, I owe phone calls to Mike Fyten, Bill Winans, Dave Blum and Bill Pyper. There are a lot of people and hours involved in putting on this type of Convention. I will be following up with you folks next week. In the interim don't hesitate to e-mail or call my cell phone. If any of the rest of you have questions or would like to forward this on to other Toy Train Enthusiasts please do so.
