Belfast dates back to anancient fort which oncecontrolled the ford acrossthe river Lagan. In fact thename of the city is derivedfrom the Gaelic Béal Feirsteroughly translated as “themouth of the sandbank”

Nowhere is this historicallegacy more potent andvibrant than along the FallsRoad where the Irishlanguage has flourished,igniting a range of 21stcentury culturalexperiences. This area isthe Gaeltacht Quarter.

Artists and craft workers cluster along with theother creative tendencies in the GaeltachtQuarter. Conway Mill houses a creativecommunity of over 20 craft workers and artists.The range of disciplines include painting, woodcarving, wood sculpture, metal work, ceramics,jewellery, furniture making and mask making. Allartists accept commissions and many have piecesof work on public display at the on site craftshop.

In the heart of the quarter sits Belfast’s oldesthouse, Beechmount House, headquarters ofColáiste Feirste a city and regional cultural assetwhich connects us to the city’ s industrial historyas far back as the middle of the 18th century.

The Quarter also houses the Falls CarnegieLibrary built in 1908 and decorated outside withsome fine features designed and executed by localsculptress Rosamond Praeger.

One of the most extensive collections ofmural art anywhere in the world can befound in the Quarter, organised tours ofthe murals and their associated historyare hosted by Coiste na nIarchimí and canbe booked through the Belfast Visitor andConvention Bureau. There are manyexamples of artwork dotted throughoutthe Quarter and highlighted in the ‘WestBelfast and Shankill Arts and HeritageTrail’. Perhaps one of the most impressiveis located up on the railings at RoyalVictoria Hospital. This high-tech laser-cutstructure depicts an immense DNAformation, evoking the core of thehospital’s work.

Throughout theQuarter many Irish Mediuminstitutions can be found; Gaelscoilan Lonnáin, Gaelscoilna bhFál,Bunscoil an tSléibhe Dhuibh andColáiste Feirste. Other second andthird level institutions in the areaare Coláiste Ollscoile Muire, StDominic’s High School Alma Materof Irish President Mary McAleeseand St Louise’s ComprehensiveCollege, one of the largest girls’schools in Europe. The Quarter isalso home to St Mary’s UniversityCollege which has been at the forefront of teacher training educationin the north of Ireland since 1900.
