isanonprofitorganizationdedicatedtopreventingteendrugusebeforeitstarts.Since1980,PreventionFirsthasprovidedtraining,technicalassistanceandresourcematerialstothousandsofschools,communitygroups,parentsandyouth.Wespecializeinbuildingthecapacityofpractitionerstoaddresslocalsubstancemisusebyassessingneedsandselectingandimplementingevidence-basedprograms,curriculaandstrategies.Wealsodevelopandimplementmediaandcommunicationcampaignsdesignedtoeducatethepubliconsubstance-relatedissues.

PreventionFirstisprimarilyfundedbytheIllinoisDepartmentofHumanServices(IDHS)DivisionofSubstanceUsePreventionandRecovery(SUPR).AdditionalfundingisprovidedbytheIllinoisDepartmentofCorrections,IllinoisDepartmentofTransportationandthroughprivatefoundationsandindividualdonations.

PreventionFirstadvanceseffortstopromotehealthybehaviorsandpreventsubstancemisuseineverycommunitythroughavarietyofevidence-basedandcollaborativeapproach-es,includingtraining,support,andpublicawareness.

PreventionFirstistheleadingorganizationforknowledge-buildingandthedissemina-tionofevidence-basedpreventionstrategies.Webelievethatevidence-basedapproachesarethemosteffectivepathstobuildingcommunitiesandproactivelysupporthealthandwell-being.

COALITION COORDINATION Duringthistwo-daytraining,participantswilllearnstrategiesforadvancingandfacilitatingacommunitycoalitiontopreventsubstanceabuse.Participantswilllearncharacteristicsofeffectivecoalitions,strategiesforrecruitingandretainingstakeholders,andstrategiesforenhancingcoalitionorganization/structure(missionandvision,clearrolesandorganizationalstructure,meetingandcommunicationhabits,decision-makingandproblem-solvingprocess,leadership).Additionally,participantswillenhancetheirabilitytofulfilltheirroleasacoalitionfacilitator,includingmeetingcoordinationandfacilitation.

CONDUCTING A MARIJUANA ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN

EFFECTIVE GROUP FACILITATIONTheabilitytoleadgroupsisessentialtoawidevarietyofpositionswithinthepreventionfield.Thistwo-daytrainingbuildsbasicfacilitationskillsofindividualsworkingwithyouthand/oradultgroups.Bytheendofthetraining,participantswillunderstandthestagesofgroupdevelopmentandthemajorissuesassociatedwiththem,aswellashowtoidentifyanduseinterventionsthatwillinfluencegroupbehavior.Thisisaninteractivetrainingthatwillincorporatetheoryintodiscussions,groupinteraction,roleplayingandpractice,andappliedlearning.

DEVELOPING MATERIALS FOR LOCALLY-DESIGNED CAMPAIGNSDuringthisinteractivevirtualclassroomcourseparticipantswilllearnaboutthestepsandbestpracticesinvolvedinplanningandimplementingalocally-designedcommunicationcampaign.Participantswillbecomefamiliarwithprintadprinciplesandobtaintips,toolsandresourcesfordesigningandpilottestingmaterials.

ESTABLISHING AND LEADING A YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEEInthisone-daytraining,participantswilllearnhowtoestablishandleadayouthadvisorycommitteetosupportlocalsubstanceabusepreventionefforts.Participantswilllearnbestpracticesforengagingyouthinadvisoryroles;howtoestablishanadvisorycommitteestructure;andstrategiesforrecruitmentandretentionofyouthadvisors.Participantswillalsolearnappropriaterolesforyouthcommitteemembersinsubstanceabusepreventionactivities.

ConductingaMarijuanaEnvironmentalScanisanonlinetrainingforCSUPSProvidersthatrelaystheinformationandtoolsneededtoconductamarijuanaenvironmentalscanwithintheirservicearea.Thescanwillassistprovidersinidentifyinglocalretailersthatsellmarijuanaparaphernalia.Participantswillalsobeprovidedwithinformationandtoolsthatwillallowthemtocreateandimplementaplantoeducatemerchantsoftheimportanceofnotsellingmarijuanaparaphernaliatopeopleundertheageof21.ThiscoursehasbeenupdatedtoalignwithFY21deliverablesandtheIllinoisCannabisRegulationandTaxAct(June2020).

PLANNING FOR NATIONAL PREVENTION WEEKThisonlinecoursewasoriginallyawebinarrecordedonFebruary26,2019.Thecontentfromthatwebinarhasbeenupdatedandmodifiedforanonlineformat.Duringthecourse,participantswillobtaininformation,tipsandtoolsforplanningforimplementingactivitiesforNationalPreventionWeek.NationalPreventionWeekisanannualhealthobservancededicatedtoincreasingpublicawarenessof,and,actionaroundmentaland/orsubstanceusedisorders.

OVERVIEW OF STRATEGIC PLANNINGOverviewofStrategicPlanningisaself-paced,onlinecoursethatprovidesparticipantswithanoverviewofthepurposeandprocessusedtodevelopacomprehensivestrategicsubstanceabusepreventionplan.Participantswillgainabetterunderstandingoftheroleofthecommunitycoalitionandthestepsinvolvedindevelopingastrategicplan.

PROMOTING THE ILLINOIS YOUTH SURVEY(*OFFERED DURING IYS ADMINISTRATION YEARS)

Thisone-daytrainingwillbuildparticipants’knowledgeandskillstopromotetheadministrationoftheIllinoisYouthSurvey(IYS)toschoolsintheirservicearea.ParticipantswilllearnstrategiestopromotetheIYStoschoolsandobtainschools’commitmenttoadministerthesurvey,aswellasstrategiesforbuildingrelationshipsandovercomingbarrierstoparticipation.Participantswillalsobecomefamiliarwitharecruitmentplantemplate.

SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION SUPERVISOR TRAINING SERIESTheSUPSupervisorTrainingisaseriesofthreeonlinecoursesdesignedformanagerswhosupervisepreventionstaffandprovideprogrammaticoversightoftheIDHSSUPRgrant.Bytakingthecoursesinthisseries,participantswillidentifycriticalskillsofpreventionspecialiststoconsiderinhiringdecisionsandapplyahiringprocess,identifystrategiesforprovidingeffectivesupervisiontostaff,andidentifystrategiesforprovidinginitialandongoingprogramsupporttopreventionstaff.Thethreecoursesintheseriesinclude:

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE SUPERVISORY SKILLSThiscourseispartoftheSUPSupervisorTrainingSeriesandisdesignedformanagerswhosupervisepreventionstaffandprovideprogrammaticoversightoftheIDHSSUPRgrant.Duringthiscourse,participantswillidentifyqualitiesofeffectivesupervisorsandstrategiesforprovidingeffectivesupervisiontostaff,includingdevelopingaflexiblemanagementstyle,buildingrelationships,challengingstafftogrow,providingongoingengagement,andconductingformalperformanceevaluations.Supervisorswillalsolearnstrategiesforbalancingtheirworkload.

TOO GOOD FOR DRUGS HIGH SCHOOL FACILITATOR TRAINING ThistrainingwillpreparefacilitatorstoimplementtheTooGoodforDrugsHighSchoolRevisedprogramsuccessfully.TheTooGoodforDrugsHighSchoolprogrampreparesstudentswiththeskillstheyneedforacademic,social,andlifesuccess.Participantswillreviewtheinteractivegamesandactivitiesthatprovidepracticalguidanceondatingandrelationships,buildinghealthyfriendships,andrefusingnegativepeerinfluence.ThetrainingwillalsoprovideareviewoflessonsfocusedontheeffectsofATODuseaswellasprescriptionandOTCdruguseandvariousnicotinedeliverydevices.Thetrainerwillfamiliarizeparticipantswiththeresearch,theory,andconceptsbehindtheprogramandprovideanopportunityforfacilitationpractice.

TOO GOOD FOR DRUGS MIDDLE SCHOOL FACILITATOR TRAINING ThistrainingwillpreparefacilitatorstoimplementtheTooGoodforDrugs(TGFD)Programsuccessfully.TheTooGoodforDrugsProgramhasseparate,developmentallyappropriatecurriculumforgradesK-12;thefocusofthistrainingisonSAPP-approvedimplementationforgrades6-8.TGFDisaschool-basedpreventionprogramdesignedtoreducetheriskfactorsandenhancetheprotectivefactorsrelatedtoalcohol,tobacco,andotherdruguseamongstudents.Participantswillgainhands-onexperiencewiththecorecurriculumwhileacquiringessentialpreventioneducationteachingstrategies.Thetrainerwillfamiliarizeparticipantswiththeresearch,theory,andconceptsbehindtheprogramandprovideanopportunityforfacilitationpractice.
