The song - taken as the first single from the LP - became a Top 10 record in late 1983. How long did the new record take to complete? "I guess it took us maybe 9 or 10 weeks over the course of 2 or 3 months," Bryans remembers, "because we were in and out. At one point we went to Europe on a promotional tour . . . at another point we went off to Dawson City to do a gig." Did your approach to this LP differ drastically from the first one? "One of the major differences was that we were more unified as a band," says Bryans, continuing with "we put the first album together as the band went on. Dave Gray, our guitar player, was brought in on the original sessions as an extra guitar player. This year, we had the luxury of touring . . . and getting to know each other. the U.K. alone. The single will be released in Canada in

both 7" and 12" formats and will be housed in four-colour custom sleeves. The 7" single

will carry a suggested list of $2.49. A video is expected to follow.

The flip contains messages from several name artists who were unable to attend

the session including David Bowie and Paul McCartney.

AIRA executive includes Calgarians

The board of the Alberta Recording Industry Association (ARIA) elected two members

from the city of Calgary - Rhoda Taylor and Rose Collins - at their recent general

meeting and election. Elected as new executives by the direc-

tors were Maurice Fritze (President), Rhoda Taylor (First Vice President), Steve Graupe

(Second Vice President), Larry Wanagas (Secretary), and Craig Elder (Treasurer).

The AIRA is beginning its second year of operation as a non-profit organization

formed to "help build and promote the music industry in Alberta." A newsletter

has been mailed, launching a province -wide membership drive. Other activities include

the second annual David Foster Songwriting Contest.

Every fourth meeting of the ARIA's Board of Directors will be held in Calgary,

with a mid -year meeting also held in Cal-

gary to facilitate updating the membership on current activities. The latter will be a

general meeting.

CBS gold designations for Gould and Boyd

In a ceremony immediately following the recent Juno Awards (Dec. 5), CBS Records

presented two Canadian classical artists gold record awards - only the 3rd and 4th such awards to be presented in the history

of the Canadian Recording Industry Asso- ciation. The gold awards signify sales in excess

of 50,000 units - a very significant accom-

plishment for classical artists in Canada. Bernie DiMatteo, President of CBS

Records Canada, and Norman Miller, Director of CBS Masterworks in Canada,

made the presentations: one to classical guitarist Liona Boyd for her Best Of Liona

Boyd LP, released in October of 1982; the other to the Glenn Gould Estate, repre-

senting the late Glenn Gould. Gould's recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations

was released in November of 1982, a scant one month after the pianist's death. The

posthumous award to Gould will be housed at the National Library of Canada, in the

newly established Glenn Gould Collection. For Boyd, the award represents her second such metal honour

- her first being

for A Guitar For Christmas, which achiev- ed gold status in December of 1982.

New agency protects video rights of labels

As a result 'of Canadian labels' perceived need to create a central agency for the

licensing and protection of music videos, the VLA Music Video Licensing Agency has

been launched. The new agency becomes effective Jan. 1, 1985.

According to CRIA President Brian Robertson

- currently supervising the new

agency - the agency's mandate includes

enforcing the rights of the various partici- pating record labels, as well as monitoring

the centralized duplication and distribu- tion of music videos.

The agency will initially license video pools, clubs, and road shows.

Robertson says that the concept parallels the work of similar bodies in other countries, and came about as the result of "massive"

demand from the record labels. Honeydrippers set for

Saturday Night Live The Honeydrippers, Es Paranza/Atlantic

recording act - notorious for their con- stantly varying incarnations

- have been firmed for a Dec. 15 appearance on the

American TVer, Saturday Night Live. The date will mark the band's live network TV

debut in North America. The appearance coincides with the success of a 5 -song mini -LP, The Honey-

drippers -

Volume One, released in Canada by WEA Music. The Volume One release is

quickly approaching double platinum status in Canada, with Sea Of Love - taken as the

first single - closing in on the Top 5 of the

RPM 100 . Included in the lineup for Saturday

Night Live are Robert Plant (lead vocals), Brian Setzer (lead guitar), Paul Shaffer

(piano), Buddy Williams (drums), Tom Barney (bass), George Wadenius (rhythm guitar), Jon Fadciis and Tom Malone (trum-

pet), Michael Brecker and Lou Marini (tenor sax), Ronnie Cuber (baritone sax),

and Fourteen Karat Soul (backing vocals). Produced by Nugetre and The Fabulous

Brill Brothers, the Volume One release features renditions of R&B classics from

the '40s, '50s and '60s.

Saturn's first gold -

for selling 50,000 units of Stevie Wonder's I Just Called To Say I

Love You from Motown's Karen Spencer - Sherlock, Quality's George Sruth, Art Pap - pone and Ned Talmey. Saturn's Leonard and Chris Kennedy, Ron Boudreault, Terry Tro-

jek and Mary Wadington accept.

Losing out on all those millions!!A certain Canadian star, who keeps re-sigtting contracts for millions and millionsmust really be bothering a certain ex -recordexecutive, who had her under contract forher original recordings. He would be amillionaire now if he had treated her fairly, and . . . honestly must regret his folly, notto mention a few other artists who slippedthrough his fingers. (EC: Yawn!!!)

Speaking of,losers!!!I can't wait for Saturday's Toronto Star tosee if they are still running The Charts ontheir trashy Audio Video page. What a greatand inventive feature. I hope they neverget rid of it. There is nothing better thaninsulting the intelligence of your readers.I love it! Never miss it! Keep it up. Pleasedon't discontinue this marvelous piece ofnewspaper creativity. (EC: Wake me whenit's over!).

The girls are getting heavy!!!The girls at a certain major label are gettingheavy . . . or is it heavier. Could it be theyare getting paid too much?

.. the prophets of doom, the messengers of mediocrity, will be 'overwhelmed by the new generation of competent, creative, confident artisans and by all those of precedinggenerations who have already demonstrated their freshnessof mind, their talent and their capacity for iaspired leader-ship." - Pierre Juneauo 1 o' d 11

Trouble in Lotusland???Quick rumour. There is trouble in Lotus -land. Those who joined the movement totake over the world are being pieced off(EC:Watch your language!!). Seems that theworld isn't rosy when you take off the pink -tinted shades. There's more to come.

Just asking for an accounting!!!It seems that a certain country associationin Canada doesn't have all the money themembers think it has . . . or should have. Afew concerned members . . . and therearen't many, want an accounting. There arealso more than a few country artists, whodid benefits and donated their hard-earnedfunds, who want to know how it was spent.Confirm or deny that this is true!!! I thinkwe are talking some big bucks here.

Another question . . . ?I understood it was the policy of thiscountry association to wander all overthe country like gypsies for their yearlyshows . . . one year in the east, the otherin the west. It looks like they don't havea policy any longer. They will followtheir western date this year with anotherwestern date the following year.

Stop the presses!!Didn't the Star rush to get a review intoThursday's paper on the Wednesday nightJuno Awards, and didn't the new and im-proved Star do a follow-up on Friday, atwhich time they published the names ofthe winners? Yes, the winners were an-nounced on Friday. That's news, andthat's the newspaper business. They have avery funny little paper.

After Juno promo? All that great promo that came out beforethe Junos was one thing, but after theJunos, the PR people couldn't come upwith photos on Thursday. Too bad. Theydropped the ball. I guess the TVer is every-thing and after that . . . they seem tosay ... who cares.

Taking a swipe at the Junos!!One really nasty comment you can makeabout the Junos is that the presenters didn'tall wear tuxedos when they appeared oncamera. That causes many of us to wonderwhy CARAS made the event "black tie"and then allowed presenters to appear oncamera in their street clothes. A number ofindustry people just won't bother renting orbuying or wearing tuxedos next year. Theglitter and the glamour is fading!!!

An encore of the Felix Awards??About 8:45 pm on the night of the Junos, agreat many people in Western Canadareached for the dial. They obviously didn'twant to see an encore of the Felix Awards. If the Felix winners were really smart, they would submit nominations for asmany of the categories as possible, and ina few years, they would control a healthychunk of the Junos. Then they would havea much more important award to try for.Why not? If the rules permit, why nottake everything you can grab!!

Shedding some light on the subject! The lighting at the Junos was pretty bad.Cameras shooting around in the dark, thehosts not being lit at all. The show was

jerky and had no flow. It isn't often whenCanadians try live television and we haven'tmastered the art (except when it comes tohockey). The Junos need a lot of work, and this year was just another indicationthat there is still a long way to go.

Pindoff adds bucks to Band AidKris Pindoff, known for his charitableacts, particularly with children, will donatethe profits from the sale of the Band Aidsingle to the fund raising project organizedto aid the famine -stricken in Ethiopia.

The courage of their convictions!!You can't help but admire a certain recordcompany who chose, a number of years ago,to disagree with our policies at RPM andcontinue to refuse to advertise in RPM,unless it's embarrassing not to. They havestood by their guns over the years, even tothe point of possibly losing millions ofdollars of extra business. That's tenacity. One thing that does bother me is that theycontinue to send their press releases, photo-graphs, review copies of their albums andsingles. We have toruse them as long as theykeep sending them. I think they should bemore adamant and stop sending them. Theyshould have the courage of their convic-tions. I could admire that.

Compact Discs are moving!!!Contrary to what many thought, includingme, the Compact Disc market is heating up.WEA's Garry Newman tells me they areselling right across the board, pop, rockand classical. No country yet and no heavymetal, but wait till the metal people startstealing CD hardware. Can you imagineTwisted Sister on Compact Disc?

Last minute Telex news!!!The Headpins have been signed to MCA.Fred Boiley, who purchased his Fixx LPat Kelly's in Winnipeg, discovered the phan-tom message recorded on Fixx's PhantomsLP. He wins a weekend in NYC to see theFixx live in concert at the Felt Forum, plus$300. spending money!!

Another Juno - another year and still good copyYes, we've seen yet another passing ofanother Juno Awards presentation and,in spite of written and verbal abuse, theJunos are still a major promotion factorfor the Canadian recording industry.

How did this year's event fare? Nottoo bad, really. It was obvious there wasmore emphasis on the television show, much to the discomfort of the payingaudience (some paid as much as $150 perticket). Many of these patrons sat behindpillars, which could have been tolerated hadtheir been monitors set up as there were inprevious years. The television show wasmuch better than it has been, but evenhere there could be much tightening up,probably down to a 90 minute event whichwould fall nicely within the attention spanof the purported 21/2 million viewers. Themusical numbers were staged and pacedwell, so the drag was obviously with thepresenters, most of whom had nothing ofnote to say and wasted valuable air timesaying it. The hosts, Andrea Martin and JoeFlaherty were excellent and should be askedto host next year's show.

Legendary producer/songwriter/performerDavid Foster presents Juno to Bryan Adams.

How did the record industry like thisyear's Junos? For the most part the com-ments were honest and the criticism wellfounded, considering that representativesfrom major and independent labels werecommittee and sub -committee membersand/or advisors for the Canadian Academyof Recording Arts & Sciences (CARAS).

"I'm more than convinced than ever,"says WEA President Stan Kuhn, "that theJunos should take place in a true theatresetting. I also believe that the record com-pany people have to become more maturein their attitude towards the Junos andacknowledge the recipients of the pro -Juno Awards with the same attention asthey do the televised portion."

Probably the most harm done to thisyear's Juno event, from the paying custo-mer standpoint was the setting, the Auto-motive Building of Exhibition Place. Thisis a building constructed mainly for good

weather events, and certainly not conduciveto the serving of a gourmet meal, which wastrucked in. The food lost most of its appealas it was hustled to the 1,400 patrons, amonumental task in itself, and one findsit difficult to fault the caterers - but therehas to be a better way.

"I was quite pleased with this year'sJunos", says Joe Summers, Executive Vice

Anne Murray chalks up another Juno, her25th. this time as Top Country Female.

President of A&M Records Canada. "It wasa giant step this year, but there are stillmore steps to be taken to tighten up someof the loose ends. I'd like to see the Junosgo from a dinner to a theatre setting. Costshave to be reduced and the television timehas to be reduced."

George Struth, President of QualityRecords, had only one word to describehis impressions of this year's Junos, andthat was "disappointing".

Says Ross Reynolds, President MCARecords (Canada). "Great television ... notso great as a spectator event."

Dave Evans, President Capitol Records -EMI of Canada, found this year's Junos"Somewhat disappointing. We should begoing back to the drawing boards to seehow we can do it better."

"It appeared that the Junos this yearwere not produced with the live audiencein mind," says CBS Canada PresidentBernie DiMatteo, "but primarily as a tele-vision show. I think the producers went toofar to the other end of the spectrum. Therewere several little inconveniences, but ithad its balancing points as well."

Don Kollar, General Manager RCACanada's Record Division, notes: "I likedthe new approach, with the separate diningroom and the theatre in the round. Outsideof a few minor technical problems it wasa great evening."

Capitol's Zappacosta presents Juno toCarole Pope - Female Vocalist of The Year.

A major coup for the Junos this yearwas the turnaround in attitudes by criticsfrom the dailies, most of whom appearedto be on their best behavior. Of course, they have been centred out in recent weeksby the "specialized" trade press (RPM),which obviously has its clout. The coverageby the press this year was excellent, and, considering the battle of words going onbetween the producers of the show andone giant Toronto daily, the overall critiquewas a refreshing and welcome change.

The Junos came into being as an in-dustry event, and it was hoped that as theseawards went to television, they would re-main an industry event, with the televisionviewer watching Canada's best being hon-oured by their peers. Unfortunately, biggerreplaced better and ego stroking becametop priority, neither of which makes for goodtelevision, a star system, nor sells records - thereal purpose of the Juno Awards. - WG

more than 500 music videos entered in competition.

The festival was host to 405 members of the media, representing148 publications, 54 radio stations, and 17 television stations.

The large turnout of media reps and regis- trants from North America was due the ef- forts of the New York -based John Nathan, a

veteran in this type of project, having been associated for many years with the highly successful MIDEM outing.

For what it's worth, if the festival could be moved ahead a couple of weeks, the

weather might be kinder; there should be an effort to remove the irritating factor of the predominance of French in dealing

with delegates and the media; and there should be a central meeting place. It's expected that within a short time a

full report will be available on what went down at this year's festival and what might

be expected for next year.

BOB DYLAN - PopReal Live - Columbia - FC-39944-PDylan has never been an easy artist to cate-gorize - but pop will suit, because the manhas bridged any number of gaps in peoples'thinking regarding what music is supposedto consist of, and how we should respondto it. Real Live - as an authorized release -represents Dylan at his best. The tracks hereare taken from a tremendously successfulU.K./European swing that certainly put thelie to any talk of creative burnout or com-mercial death. Jacks' move to Nashvilleaids career directionCompleat recording artist Susan Jacks hasfollowed up her Tall Dark Stranger singlewith Another Woman's Man. The newsingle, distributed in Canada by QualityRecords, qualifies as 3 -parts Cancon (MAL).

Jacks was a member of the Poppy Familyin the late '60s and early '70s, a duo thatdelivered such hits as Evil Grows, and WhichWay You Goin' Billy?

In a recent telephone conversation withRPM, Jacks alluded to the changes in hercareer bolstered considerably by a moveto Nashville.

"There was an element of country inThe Poppy Family," Jacks remembers,"and to be honest, I never felt like I fitinto a 'rock' category. When I went toNashville, I was amazed that people wereaware of my career. For me, countrymusic has opened up - it even includesadult contemporary."

Jacks notes the feeling of 'family' inNashville, and the professionalism of thesession players with whom she has dealt.

"Almost everything has been affectedby my move," she explains, "my confi-dence, my attitude; they really accept youwith open arms down here, and the level ofmusicianship is incredible. After all, this isMusic City U.S.A. I've done two singles(mentioned above) and we've got five tunesprepared fore an LP which we hope to haveout in the spring."

Another Woman's Man is moving stead-ily up the RPM Country 60 after four weeksof charting.

i More good news for Murray

Besides resigning a multi -million dollar deal with Capitol, Anne Murray's latest single,

Nobody Loves Me Like You Do, a duet with Dave Loggins, has topped all U.S. record

charts, including the major trades. The single also placed in the Top 10 on the pop

adult charts throughout the U.S. Earlier this year Anne won both Single and Album of the Year honours at the Annual Country

Music Awards for her recording of A Little Good News. She also won his year's Juno

as Female Country Vocalist of The Year.

Jacks' move to Nashville aids career direction

Compleat recording artist Susan Jacks has followed up her Tall Dark Stranger single

with Another Woman's Man. The new single, distributed in Canada by Quality

Records, qualifies as 3 -parts Cancon (MAL). Jacks was a member of the Poppy Family

in the late '60s and early '70s, a duo that delivered such hits as Evil Grows, and Which

Way You Goin' Billy? In a recent telephone conversation with RPM, Jacks alluded to the changes in her career bolstered considerably by a move

to Nashville. "There was an element of country in

The Poppy Family," Jacks remembers, "and to be honest, I never felt like I fit into a 'rock' category. When I went to

Nashville, I was amazed that people were aware of my career. For me, country music has opened up - it even includes adult contemporary."

Jacks notes the feeling of 'family' in Nashville, and the professionalism of the

session players with whom she has dealt. "Almost everything has been affected

by my move," she explains, "my confi- dence, my attitude; they really accept you

with open arms down here, and the level of musicianship is incredible. After all, this is

Music City U.S.A. I've done two singles (mentioned above) and we've got five tunes

prepared for an LP which we hope to have out in the spring."

Another Woman's Man is moving stead- ily up the RPM Country 60 after four weeks of charting.

singles along with 4 successful albums, along with a television show in 1981 on the

mid -Canada network, plus many major concerts and special events, Harold Mac-

Intyre will be performing his last date on Dec. 31 at the Dallas Club in Hamilton, as

a member of the Area Code 705 Band." A mutual agreement has apparently been

reached between Larry Coad and Harold wherein the two members will go their separate ways for the time being. Peever

points out however that "there are several negotiated dates for the summer of '85

which might bring them back together for several days. Harold will be working with various bands throughout Canada for his

dates and will be based in the Maritimes. Christmas Boy from Dominic

New from Ottawa Policeman Dominic D'Arcy is his Diana single, Christmas Boy,

The winner of CBLT's (Toronto) Look Out World

country singer Debbie Bechamp. The competition attracted more than 1,000

enquiries, with 500 auditioning and 75 becoming finalists for a chance to star in

their own television show. CBLT (Channel 5) will present Debbie

in three holiday season specials called: And The Winner is

. . . Debbie. The debut

special will be broadcast Dec. 18 at 7:00 pm, and the remaining two specials will air Christmas Day at 6:30 pm and January

1st. at 6:30 pm. Guests will include Ronnie Hawkins, bluegrass group Whisky Jack,

Carole Pope and Holly Woods, two rockers singing Christmas Carols, and Juno Award

winners The Good Brothers. Debbie, who has enjoyed chart listings

on the RPM Country 60, her most recent being I'm Gonna Love You More, was

obviously beside herself when she won the contest. "When I heard my name

announced as the winner," she comments, "I couldn't believe it. I was numb. Having

the opportunity to work with so many incredibly talented people has definitely

made this the high point in my career." The TV specials are being produced

by Tim Williams.

was co -written by the late Ben McPeek and C. Alexander Brown.

Artisan release for Eastman The Nashville -based Artisan label has signed

a recording deal with Eddie Eastman. First release is Dreaming All Over Again. The

single and production was through the team effort of Eastman and Gilles Godard. The

MAPL logo is incorrect on the label copy, and should read MAL. The production only

took place in Nashville.

Clements single on Book Shop I've Been Goin' Home, a new single by

Vassar Clements, has been released in Canada on the Cornwall -based Book Shop

label. Vassar will be in the studio shortly to complete a new album which will include

two duets with Bobby Lalonde, who also releases on Book Shop and who was voted

Instrumentalist of the Year at the 1984 ACME Awards in Moncton.

A. Frank Willis is on release with Hello Mom And Dad (We're Coming Home For

and qualifies as 4 -parts Cancon. A multi -instrumentalist, Willis has iper-

formed across Canada, and appeared on several television shows including That's

Wel CIO 411U2Massey Hall - Toronto - Dec. 7/84This Island recording group performed be-fore a packed audience in what will proba-bly be remembered as one of the best showsof 1984. The Irish quartet gave their fans aflawless performance begininng with I WillFollow. The sound of this new wave guitar -based band is unmistakable. All this can beattributed to the axe -work of The Edge, who was obviously inspired by British gui-tar greats like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.

WTA sees year out withprecious metal awardsWEA Music of Canada will finish the yearwith one of the largest tallies of gold andplatinum awards in their history. Leadingthe list is Prince, whose Purple Rain LP hasgone six times platinum (600,000 units) andsays WEA's Garry Newman, "This is just thebeginning. With the release of Prince's latestsingle, I Would Die 4 U, the album sales willcontinue for some time."

WEA gold to Honeymoon Suite for theirself -titled debut LP after the Juno Awards(Dec. 5). WEA's Stan Kulin, Garry Newman, and Bob Roper presented the awards to theband and their producer Tom Treumuth.

Van Halen - 1984, has scored five timesplatinum and is the band's biggest sellingalbum to date.

The Cars' Heartbeat City has gone fourtimes platinum, which marks their third400,000 plus selling album.

Twisted Sister has become one of thetop priorities in the WEA camp. Their StayHungry LP is already three times platinum."Selling so fast," says Newman, "we canhardly keep up". Sales for this group sky-rocketed 'after their Toronto date wherethey lent themselves to wild promotionsthat contributed to album sales.

Madonna's Like A Virgin has goneplatinum after only three weeks and makesgood gains up the RPM 100. The title track, taken as a single is also making good chartgains.

Prince's protege Sheila E hashome with gold for her Glamorous LifeLP, and the WEA people feel good vibesfor her latest single, The Belle Of St. Mark.

Linda Ronstadt's Lush Life, "should begold by Christmas" boasts Newman. "Thisshould be the Christmas gift of the year."

Chicago 17 had a bit of a late start butthe LP is now gold. "Chicago's metalsituation will improve dramatically withthe release of You're The Inspiration, theirlatest single," concludes Newman.

The Edge however, has gone further inadapting his own style in his use of har-monics. As a whole, there's a military feel-ing about U2's sound, yet their music is verypositive. They let loose with material fromtheir familiar Boy, War and UnforgettableFire albums, with Pride (In The Name OfLoVe) from the latter, generating the great-est reaction. Opening the show was anotherIsland recording band, The VWrerboys, whoshowcased material from their debut, APagan Place. The band can be described asnew wave meets brass, having managed tocombine both in an original fashion. - PM

PRINCEMaple Leaf Gardens - Toronto - Dec. 2/84When Prince strode on stage, he left littledoubt that here was today's new royaltyof rock, although it took him 7 years toattain this plateau (For You - released in1978). He moved his 5'2" frame with anoverbearing cockiness that made him lookmuch taller. The swagger and confidencewas an imposing part of his act. The soldout house was ready and as he launchedinto Let's Go Crazy, the place turned intoa zoo. Although his records are appreciatedby all ages - male and female - he concen-trated his attention on the females, whichdidn't go down too well with the males. His performance was spectacular - pureshowbiz, but the effects were tedious andoverdone. A little less talking and a littlemore dancing and it would have been a totalcrowd pleaser instead of a woman's nightout. His repertoire was familiar (his PurpleRain album has now gone six times plati-
