0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian StandardsInstitution on 24 December 19B1, after the draft finalized by theBuilding Limes Sectional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.

0.2 Lime based blocks are being used on a limited scale for the construe­tion of walls, internal partitions and filler walls in place of traditionalclay building bricks, particularly for low cost housing. These blocks arenormally made from lime, lime and cement, lime and pozzoJana orIime-pozzolana mixture. These blocks being light in weight ensurerapid construction, help in saving of mortar, and the surfaces beingsmooth do not need plastering. The specification of these blocks has beencovered in IS : 3115-1978*. This standard which is an essential adjunctto the above specification is intended to provide guidance with respect tothe manufacture of such blocks making use of lime, pozzolana, cementand aggregates as chief constituents. While preparing this standardassistance has been derived from Central Road Research Institute,New Delhi.

0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor­dance with IS: 2-1960t. The number of significant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard lays down the requirements regarding materials,method of manufacture, curing and finishing of lime based blocks.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 3115·1978* and IS : 6508-1 972t shall apply.

3. MATERIALS

3.1 Lime - This shall conform to Class C ( dry hydrated) of IS : 712­1973t·

3.2 Cement - This shall conform to either IS : 269-1976§, IS: 455­197611 or IS: 14R9-1q76~.

3.3 Pozzo]ana

3.3.1 Burnt C/a..y Po.:::.o!ana - This shall conform to IS : 1314-1968**.

3.3.2 Fty Ast: - This shall conform to IS : 3812-1981tt.

3.4 Lime-Pozzolana Mixture - This shall conform to IS: 1098­1967+:::.

3.5 Coarse Aggregate - Shall be either natural or crushed stone con­forming to IS: 383-1970§§ or hroken brick (burnt clay) aggregatesconforming to IS : 3068-1 975J111.

3.6 Cinder Aggregate - This shall conform to IS : 2G86-1 977~~ andthe maximum size shall not exceed 20 rom.

3.7 Fine Aggregate - This shall conform to IS ; 383-1970§§.

3.8 Water - Shall be clean and frcc from injurious amount of de­leterious matter. Potable water is generally considered satisfactory.

3.8.1 The pH value of water shall generally be not less than 6.

4. MIX PROPORTION

4.0 The mix shall be so designed that the blocks meet the requirementof IS : 3115-1978*.

4:.1 Mix Proportion for Lime-Pozzolana Blocks - Therecommended mix proportions of lime pozzolana concrete for the manu­facture of lime-pozzolana blocks arc given in Table 1.

4.2 Mix Proportion for Lime-Cement Blocks - The recommendedmix proportion for manufacture of lime-cement blocks is 1-3: I : 18( lime, cement, cinder- aggregate by volume ).

4.2.1 Water in just sufficient quantity shall be added to maintain theworking consistency, but at the same time it shall not be excessive lead­ing to segregation of aggregates from the ccmentitious material.

5. MIXING AND MOULDING

5.1 Mixing shall be done in a mechanical mixer.

5.2 Mixing for Lime-Pozzolana Blocks

5.2.1 Saturated surface dry coarse aggregate shall first be f(~d into themechanical mixer. The required quantities of sand and lime-pozzolanamixture 01' lime and pozzolana separately shall then be added to themixer. Part of the water shall then be added and the contents mixed.The remaining quantity of water shall then be finally added and thecontents shall be mixed well. The total time of mixing shall not beless than 2 minutes and shall be sufficient to ensure uniform mixing.

5.3 Mixing for Lime-Cemen t Blocks

5.3.1 Cement and well soaked cinder aggregates in the requiredproportion shall be mixed dry in the mixer. Lime putty mixed in watershall then be passed into the mixer and mixed until a well mixed con­crete of uniform appearance is obtained. The quantity of water addedto lime putty shall be slightly less than the required quantity. The use ofexcess water impairs the streng-th of the block and it should be ensuredthat no water shall flow out of the block during compacting and only athin film of water shall appear at the surface after compaction.

5.4 In a mechanically or electrically operated machine, the mould forthe blocks shall be filled up with the mix by providing a surcharge ofabout 20 percent above the top level of the mould. It shall be vibratedor mechanically tamped and struck off level.

5.5 In the cast' of hand-operated machine, the mix shall he placed intothe mould in layers of about 50 to 70 mm and each layer thoroughlytamped with suitable tamper until the whole mould is filled up andstruck off level with a trowel.

6. DRYING

6.1 Immediately after the block is prepared as per 5.4 and 5.5 it shall bereleased from the mould and removed along with the hast' plate to acovered shed. The shed shall he such as to provide protection againstsun, strong wind and rain. 'I'he blocks shall be stored in the shed untilthese are sufficiently hardened to permit handling without damage. Butin no case shall the period be less than 96 h in the case of lime-pozzolanablocks and 18 h in the case of lime-cement blocks.

1. CURING

7.1 The blocks after drying for 96 h in the case of lime-pozzolana blocksand 18 h in the case of lime-cement blocks shall be stacked, suitablycovered and shall be kept moist by SPI aying with water at regularintervals. The curing period shall not be less than 28 days.
