5LUNCHEON WINNERSMEE T THE CHAIRS
ANNA MICHALSKI“Something I ’ve come to appreciate about the t imes in l i fe that don’t go
smoothly or as planned: the unique oppor tunit y I have to learn about or
see things f rom a perspec t ive I might not other wise.”
I am not cer ta in when we
wi l l be able to gather in
person as a chapter With
a l l that i s going on around
us, you’d think I ’d be able
to star t out with something
better than, “Can you bel ieve
we are a lmost a l ready hal fway
through 2020?? !”
We have had so much thrown
at us in this shor t year thus
far. How is ever yone handl ing
i t a l l?
For some of us, th is whole
distancing f rom one another
may have come on as a
welcome repr ieve f rom the
dai ly gr ind. For others, i t
may feel as i f we’re s i t t ing in
a real ly long and drawn out
adult t imeout . Personal ly, I
th ink I vaci l late bet ween the
t wo, depending on the day. I n
the midst of how we a l l feel
about our changing surround-
ings, are the real - l i fe impac ts
to our indiv idual and col lec-
t ive re lat ional and f inancia l
s i tuat ions. I t ru ly hope you a l l
are managing wel l with what-
ever this t ime has brought
your way.
Something I ’ve come to
appreciate about the t imes
in l i fe that don’t go smoothly
or as planned: the unique
oppor tunit y I have to learn
about or see things f rom a
perspec t ive I might not oth-
er wise. Al l the shi f ts in the
way we do our normal day to
day have real ly provided me
with many oppor tunit ies to
quest ion what par ts of that
‘normal ’ I wi l l cont inue to
subscr ibe to when we a l l get
to go back out into the world
and mingle as we once did,
before the dreaded ‘C ’ word
came on scene.
M aybe i t i s only this way for
some of us. I ’m sure there are
those wired to take things in
di f ferent ly and tend to see
people l ike me as something
pecul iar to f igure out? For
me, in order to real ly see with
c lar i t y, a d i rec t ion I need to
go in or an answer to some -
thing my mind is t r y ing to
work out , I need to get quiet .
The world, and even my own
thoughts tend to make quiet
in my head, a ver y necessar y
and intent ional prac t ice.
This reminds me of something
I heard Steven Spielberg
speak about in a motivat ional
speech years ago. I t was an
impromptu ta lk he gave to a
group of graduate students
and he star ted of f by expla in-
ing to them that when he was
enter ing col lege he hadn’t
declared a major. The col lege
he was attending didn’t have
a program in direc t ing and
f i lm or he’d have gone in that
di rec t ion as he a l ready k new
what he wanted to do for h is
career. H is father encour-
aged him to major in Engl ish
so that he’d have an oppor tu-
nit y to teach i f he needed to,
te l l ing him that he needed a

6 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
fa l l back career – you k now,
in case the direc t ing thing
didn’t pan out . M r. Spie lberg
went on to say that though
he v iews teaching as one of
the most noble of a l l careers,
i t wasn’t what moved him, i t
wasn’t h is pass ion. What he
has s ince learned and states
he consistent ly te l ls h is chi l -
dren is th is :
“L isten to the whisper. The
hardest thing to l i s ten to,
your inst inc ts, your intuit ion
– human personal intuit ion
– a lways whispers, i t never
shouts. I t ’s ver y hard to hear,
so you have to, ever y day of
your l ives, be ready to hear
what whispers in your ear. I t
ver y rarely shouts and i f you
can l i s ten to the whisper and
i f i t t ick les your hear t and is
something you think you want
to do for the rest of your l i fe
then that is going to be what
you do for the rest of your l i fe
and we wi l l a l l benef i t f rom
ever ything you do.”
I th ink M r. Spie lberg overs im-
pl i f ies a bi t here. How nice
would i t be i f a l l we needed
to do was fol low in the direc-
t ion of our t ick led hear t and
we’d a l l be doing what we
are pass ionate about for the
remainder of our l ives? I do
understand the sent iment
though and I agree. I bel ieve
we are a l l presented with
oppor tunit ies in l i fe to move
toward something that
inspires us and makes l i fe and
even our work , more ful f i l l ing
and purposeful . We just need
to be paying attent ion and
have the capacit y to receive i t
when i t ’s in f ront of us.
Even when we aren’t in the
middle of a v i ra l pandemic,
i t ’s impor tant we remem-
ber to car ve out some space
in our wor ld to hear and give
attent ion to that quiet , intu-
i t ive voice each one of us
have. What is yours te l l ing
you?*
