From the Board of Trustees
Dearest Members,
Happy New Year! As we transition from 2016 to 2017, we want to acknowledge our shared
accomplishments and talk about what’s in store for 2017. This is by no means a comprehensive
list - just a quick reflection of what stands out as we strive to fulfill our mission:
“To share among our members a love of tennis that is distinguished by
friendliness, inclusiveness and tradition.”
In early 2016, the current Board of Trustees discussed what we envision for the club five years
from now and what we should focus on now to ensure we are making traction on what
matters. Two themes that emerged are Stewardship and Community.
Our Swim Committee was renamed Pool Committee to better reflect the full contribu-
tion of the pool to the Irvington Club experience. Bernadette Diepenbrock was hired as
our new manager.
We experimented with ways to serve people on our Wait List, including making courts
available during low-usage days/times.
Our club tournaments had record-setting participation and our Tournament Committee
continues to up their game and improve everyone’s overall experience.
We hosted a “VoluntIrvington” event that spotlighted non-profit organizations that our
members are involved with as a way of both honoring our members’ contribution to the
larger community and creating opportunity for engagement from other members.
A hitting wall was purchased and is (almost) installed, making better use of our underutilized singles court and offering all
tennis players another opportunity to work on their game.
Our juniors represented us well at the Oregon State High School Tournament with many participants including, Boys’ 6A
Singles champ and runner-up and Boys’ 1A-4A Doubles runner-up.
One-third of our members responded to our club survey regarding satisfaction in several key areas.
We launched a new club website with the coordinated effort of our newly formed IT Committee and dedicated staff.
We continue to invest in the Club’s physical and social well-being while maintaining strong financial health.
And, there is a lot more to do in 2017! We will be gathering more member feedback, as follow-up to the survey, and using that
feedback to help us direct our priorities for 2017 and beyond.
With much gratitude for your commitment to our club and our community,
The Irvington Board of Trustees
Notif icat ion of Dues Increase 2017 Dues Rates
In 2017, the Club membership dues will
continue to increase at a basic 4% annual rate
as decided at the onset of the clubhouse
remodel. After reviewing our past year
performance and our projected 2017 budget,
the Board believes this rate of annual increase
allows the Club to meet its bank loan obligations
and sets us on a path to be able to afford our
property taxes when our historic exemption
ends in six years.
You will see the 2017 dues increase on your
January 31st dated statement.
Monthly Rate Single $114.50 Couple $140.50 Family $160.25 POOL - Full Summer Non-Resident $ 66.75 Single $545.00 Senior Associate $ 66.75 Couple $885.00 Associate $101.00 Add. Dear Irvington Members:
By the time you receive this, we will have celebrated bringing in
a New Year. I get a little nostalgic when I think I have had the
pleasure of working here for more than 15 years. I have
experienced a lot of happiness and yes, some sadness. I am
connected to members in many different ways and at many
different levels. It is you, the members that make this Club the
special place it is. My staff and I are always striving to make
your experience here the best it can be. Please do not hesitate
to offer suggestions or ideas to me.
Our long-awaited new website will be up and running by the
first week in January. Many thanks to all of those involved in
this process. The new website will have current, accurate
information and I think you will find it very easy to navigate.
There will be blasts and signage coming with more information.
We will be doing a major clean-out of the basement in the next
few weeks. Due to our limited storage, we must maximize
every inch of the club and the basement is one of our main
“storage areas.”
Please help us keep the Club clean and organized. Put things
back in place (chairs in the lobby, dishes in the kitchen). The
weight room is of particular importance in keeping it clean and
free of germs. Please wipe down your equipment after use.
Please make sure your shoes are clean. Mud and dirt tends to
get stuck in certain shoes and this tracks into the lobby and
onto the machines. Please be respectful of other members
when working out, as it is a shared space. Just doing a few little
things will make a big difference.
Happy New Year!
Barb

Here are some important thoughts when playing doubles:
Making your first serve in the box. It is more important for you to get your first serve in at a slower pace than miss it and
hit a weak second serve that your opponent can pounce on. Try to hit your first serve three-quarter pace with some spin
rather than an unpredictable hard-as-you-can first serve. Granted, there are times when you are up in a match and can afford
to lose a point here and there where you can then go for your killer serve. Just be smart about it.
Most of the time, a doubles point is finished within five hits. Because of this, it is vital that you play consistent tennis. If you
are the server, try to keep focused on hitting your first serve in and then your next volley, half-volley or groundstroke suc-
cessfully. If you are the receiver, it is important that you make a good solid return past the opposing net player.
If you are the server’s partner, get close to the net on his/her first serve. You can’t pounce on the return if you aren’t
close to the net. Move back off the net a bit on his/her second serve. Show that you are confident with your partner’s first
serve.
Start our playing aggressively. By this, I mean get to the net with your partner as much as you can. Remember the saying,
“good things happen at the net.” If you lobbed once or even two or three times, continue to get to the net. Don’t be
too quick to change your team’s tactics. If lobbing continues more than four to five times then stay back for a few points
and then start to attack again.

Thanks to the efforts of member Bob Farentinos,
we have a new rowing machine in the weight
room. Below you will find a link that Bob has
provided to ensure proper technique and use of
this equipment.
For those who don’t know, Bob is our resident
rowing aficionado. He began his rowing career in
2003 and within a few years he was rowing
competitively, winning gold and silver medals in
Northwest Regional Masters Championships in
single sculling. In 2007, he won the Canadian
National Masters Championship and has competed
successfully since then in national and regional
regattas and head races (time-trial competition) in
single and double sculling.
Next time you see Bob on the machine, give him a
big thank you!
