IRS DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL

IRS data is available 2-3 weeks after electronically filing your taxes or 8-11 weeks after filing a paper tax return.

These instructions assume you have already filed a FAFSA.

Section 1: How to Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool 1. Go to www.fafsa.gov and click “Login.” Enter requested information and click “Next.” 2. Click on “Make FAFSA Corrections.” * Be sure you have the appropriate FAFSA year selected (2013-2014 for the Spring 2014 or Summer 2014 Semesters; 2014-2015 for the Fall 2014, Spring 2015 or Summer 2015 Semesters).

3. Enter the student’s PIN and create a password. 4. Click on the Financial Information section.

* If you want to use the Data Retrieval tool for STUDENT ONLY, press “next” at the bottom of the page. For both PARENT AND STUDENT continue to step 5. 5. Change tax filing status to “Already Completed,” if it doesn’t already say so.

6. A series of questions will then appear. If you can answer “No” to all of the questions you will be eligible to use the Data Retrieval Tool. (If you are ineligible to use the Data Retrieval Tool, you will need to request a Tax Return Transcript from the IRS.) 7. Enter the requested PIN and click “Link to IRS.” Click “OK” on the next two screens. 8. You should now be on the IRS website. Enter the requested information exactly as it appears on your tax return.

• Name (middle initial if on tax form) • DOB • Filing Status • Address

9. Click Submit. If the IRS is able to validate your identity, you IRS tax information will display. 10.  Check the box “Transfer my Tax Information to FAFSA.” 11. Click “Transfer Now.”

12. You will be taken back to the FAFSA. You will see that your IRS information has been entered into most of the questions. DO NOT CHANGE ANY NUMBERS labeled “Transferred from IRS” or you will invalidate the data retrieval. **Wages/Income from work does not transfer from the IRS so be sure to enter any income that was earned from wages, a business, or a farm in this field** 13. Review the changes that have been made and check for accuracy. Remember, do not change any values that are denoted as “Transferred from IRS” or you will invalidate the Data Retrieval. Click “Next” if everything is correct.

14. Correction will be listed, Click “Next” and “Sign and Submit.”

How to obtain a Tax Return Transcript Online

1. Go to www.irs.gov. 2. Under “Tools,” click on “Get Transcript of Your Tax Records.”

3. Select “Get Transcript Online.”

4. You will need to create an account, if you have not already done so, in order to obtain your transcripts online. 5. Once you are signed in you will be given the option of several types of transcripts. Black Hawk College will need a Tax Return Transcript. Make sure that you select the Tax year that we have requested.
