  • A Short History

Few are the legions that have burned with a smoldering hatred of the Imperium more than the legendary and infamous Iron Warriors. None have prosecuted the Long War further or better, except perhaps for Abaddon's Black Legion.

Even at their beginning, the Iron Warriors had an affinity for the logic and mechanics of warfare. Stubborn and determined, few could match them in their dogged methods of war. Having been created with a highly stable gene-seed the Iron Warriors were one of the first legions to be given leave to operate beyond the Sol system. Alongside the 1st and 4th Legions, the Iron Warriors marched into the stars to prosecute the Great Crusade. There among the stars the Iron Warriors earned a reputation for little creativity in their battle tactics and suffered losses that other legions would blanch at to see on their rolls of honor.

Things changed when the legion discovered their lost primarch, Perturabo. The primarch of the Iron Warriors was cold, brutal, and unforgiving his unforgiving nature only matched by his sheer brilliance. A master artisan and engineering genius, Perturabo was a match for the highest of adepts andmagi of the Adeptus Mechanicus. After taking command of his legion, Perturabo reviewed their war record up to that point of the great crusade. What he found did not impress him, instead it merely angered him. No gene-sons of his would disgrace his blood like what had gone before again. In retribution for their mistakes in the past, the entire legion was put through a process of decimation. Drawn by lots, 1 in every 10 legionaries was selected and beaten to death by the bare hands of their 9 fellows. With blood and suffering would Perturabo purify his legion.

With Perturabo in command, the Iron Warriors became the penultimate experts in siege warfare and defensive work construction. Because of this expertise, the legion quickly began being deployed to wars zones that offered little glory or honor besides a ditch, siege works, and another citadel to tear down. They became known as the workhorse legion of the Great Crusade. While their brother legion, the Imperial Fists, boasted of their own prowess of fortress construction and tallied their victory laurels, the Iron Warriors were left to grind their teeth in frustration and hatred, simmering deep beneath their taciturn exteriors.

When the Horus Heresy erupted, Perturabo was already reeling from what he believed to be truly unforgivable crimes. Olympia, his homeworld and the command center of his legion, had rebelled against the Imperium. In retribution and anger Perturabo had burned Olympia to the ground, slaughter millions of the population in a vicious orbital bombardment. As the Iron Warriors and their primarch walked upon the scorched earth of their homeworld they felt the unrelenting sting of shame and fear. Other legions had faced censure for less than this

Before his crimes upon Olympia became known to the wider galaxy, Horus made his bid for rebellion and the opening fight of the wars of the Horus Heresy had begun. Siding with his brother Horus, Perturbo dedicated himself to destroying and tearing down every prideful edifice that had once been built up by his brother Rogal Dorn. The festering anger, resentment, and hatred that had simmered in the deepest heart of all Iron Warriors came bubbling to the surface a volcanic eruption that would burn strong for ten millennia

  • HQ Section

    The Warsmith [250 Points]

Once known as Barban Falk, a high ranking member of Perturabo's Trident, this warrior came to call himself simply by his rank: Warsmith. In the wake of the heresy, the Warsmith led his grand company from victory to victory, until finally making the crown jewel of his career on Hydra Cordatus. In return for his services and devotion, the Chaos Gods bestowed upon him their own twisted touch. The Warsmith ascended to become a daemon prince. Though he is now a daemon, the Warsmith has forgotten nothing of the warcraft that once made him a fierce son of Iron.

Eye of Hephaestus: Torn from the skull of a master smith aeons before by an angry warlord seeking recompense, this daemonic eye now serves whomever carries it into battle -- always seeking it's nemesis. A model with the Eye of Hephaestos may re-roll failed armor penetration rolls when making Vector Strike attacks.

  • Warsmith Honsou The Half-Breed [180 Points]

Known to his more prejudiced Iron Warrior brothers as 'the Half-Breed,' Honsou was born out of the twisted gene-seed practices of the Iron Warriors in the 40th Millenium. Gene-seed stolen from Imperiumstocks that belonged to the Imperial Fists Space Marine Chapter was mixed with that of the Iron Warriors. By such measures have the Iron Warriors maintained their strength and numbers in the waning years of the past several millenia. This prejudice towards his gene-seed has driven Honsou from a lowly warrior to master and warsmith of his own Grand Company.

Range: -S: +3AP: 3Type: Melee, Armourbane, Fleshbane, Enervating*

*Enervating: it is this arm that gives Honsou the Feel no Pain (3+) special rule.

  • Cadaras Grendel Champion of the Blood Harvest [160 Points]

Whereas most Iron Warriors are accustomed to close quarters fighting, few love it more than Cadaras Grendel. Called a 'butcher' by most and thought to be well on the path to becoming a Khornate devotee, Grendel still remains sharply intelligent and deathly cunning. He serves the Half-Breed only because Honsou has always given him victory. If ever his warsmith shoulder falter, Grendel will not hesitate to take his place.

Range: -S: +2AP: 4Type: Melee, Daemon Weapon, Rending

  • Warsmith Chengrel Lord of the Long War [230 Points]

Through the vagaries of war through the millennia of prosecuting the Long War, the Warsmith Chengrel was forced to accept the replacement of his flesh with iron. Chengrel now personifies the creed of the Iron Warriors unlike any other member of the legion. Instead of being placed inside of a normal dreadnought frame, Chengrel chose to be placed into a Defiler war machine.

The Mind Impulse Unit, or MIU, is a neural link between a sentient mind and a piece of equipment, allowing an individual to control practically any system by thought alone. A model with this special rule may choose to, in lieu of a shooting attack, take control of one friendly war machine within 18 and fire all its weapon systems at Chengrel's ballistic skill.

  • Iron Warriors Warsmith [100 Points]

To be an Iron Warrior is to be one among a chosen few. To be a Warsmith of the Iron Warriors is to be all but a demi-god among mortals. Few men know war and its requisite crafts as well as an Iron Warriors Warsmith. Only the mightiest and most cunning achieve this exalted rank. Few willingly challenge or disobey a Warsmith, for their deeds and word are Iron.

Wargear, and/or Iron Warriors Artefacts sections of the wargear lists. Alternatively, the Warsmith may replace all his wargear with Terminator Armour....40 pts If a Warsmith takes Terminator Armor then the option of replacing the Power Weapon with a

Power Fist is a free. Additionally, the Warsmith may choose to replace his boltgun with a combi-bolter at no additional cost.

A Warsmith in Terminator Armour may then take items from the Terminator Weapons, Chaos Rewards, Special Issue Wargear, and/or Iron Warriors Artefacts sections of the lists.

The Warsmith may choose to take a Mark of Chaos at no additional cost. However, if this is taken with the Warsmith, his Leadership value is reduced by 1 permanently. (Example: Warsmith Kodarian has submitted himself to Khorne and takes his Mark as proof of his allegiance and is now Ld: 9 instead of Ld: 10)

  • Iron Warriors Warpsmith [100 Points]

Though it cannot be doubted that there were those legions more closely acquainted with the secrets of the Priesthood of Mars, such as the Iron Hands Legion, the Iron Warriors themselves were also well aware of the benefits of having skilled warriors who were also knowledgeable of the workings of the Machine. Few have delved so deeply or so darkly into how to twist a machine's spirit under dominationthan a Warpsmith and no warpsmiths have gone further than those that are sons of Perturabo.

  • Dark Servitor Retinue [10 Points]

Like a dark cavalcade of puppets, these twisted servitors follow their master wherever he wishes and follows the commands given to the absolute. Dark Servitors do not hinder a Warpsmith from joining another friendly unit and do not count towards transportation capacity. They must remain in unit coherency.

Iron Warriors Siege Squad [75 Points]

  • Iron Warriors Support Squad

It is not always practical to field large numbers of concentrated units, as they may become the targets of concentrated enemy fire...or artillery support. It is just these types of targets that Iron Warrior Support Squads focus their fierce firepower upon.

  • Janissary Assault Battalion [80 Points]-Author's Note & Rule: For every Iron Warrior Siege Squad, Support Squad, or Battle Squad you may take one Janissary Assault Battalion. This does not take up a Force Organization Chart slot.

Not all that fight beneath the banner of the Iron Warriors are gene-bred Space Marines. Born and bred on worlds dominated by their Iron Masters, these weakling mortals are nothing but cannon fodder. Their sole purpose in life is to fight and die for the Iron Warriors. No pity. • Iron Warrior Eradication Squad [160 Points]

Just before the orbital firestorm was unleashed, consuming millions of lives upon ancient Olympia, there were several Grand Companies that had made planetfall and begun to butcher the traitorous citizenry at will. Remnants of those blood thirsty Iron Warriors still remain, slightly more embittered bythe Long War than their fellow Iron Warriors.

special rules to their Special rules entries:

Special Rules: Hatred (Sons of Dorn)

Flak Canon Gun Battery [75 Points]

  • Heavy Support Section

Necessity Is The Father of War: If a player is using this Iron Warriors Grand Companysupplement, they have access to all Land Raider variants both loyalist and Chaos for the points and options as described in their respective codices and count towards Heavy Support choice Force Organization Chart slots. However, once taken for use by a player using the Iron Warrior Grand Company supplement, they lose all Special Rules normally assigned to them and gain Hatred (Sons of Dorn) and Lessons of Perturabo special rules. These vehicles may then take upgrade options from the Chaos Space Marine Vehicle Options list from the Chaos Space Marine codex.

The player using this Iron Warriors Grand Company supplement also has access to the following Imperial Guard (aka Astra Militarum) artillery tanks and artillery units as described in Imperial Armour Volume One Second Edition on pages 162, 188, and 198. Any and all crew requirements are changed to read with [identical number] Iron Warrior crew. As such these vehicles and artillery pieces also change their Ballistic Skill from BS3 to BS4. Each unit, in addition to their weapon-specific special rules, alsogain Hatred (Sons of Dorn) and the Lessons of Perturabo special rules.

Stor-Bezashk Artillery Train: The Stor-Bezashk was a prestigious unit of the Iron Warriors during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy. The brotherhood was made up ofthe elite siege masters of the Legion and commanded mighty siege weapons even unseenoutside of the Adeptus Mechanicus' Ordo Reductor itself. This is an Iron Warriors detachment special rule. If you take an Iron Warriors Grand Company as your primary detachment and purchase one unit that is a Vindicator, Basilisk, Medusa, Griffon, Colossus, Heavy Artillery Carriage Battery, or Field Artillery Battery you may purchase a second, identical unit that does not take up an Force Organization Chart slot.

  • Iron Warriors Grand Company Warlord Traits List

    D6 Warlord Trait

    (1) Olympian Born: This Iron Warrior is a true blood, no spawn of mixed or mongrel gene-seed. A survivor and conqueror in equal measure since the death of Olympia. The warlord and all units within 12" of him may re-roll all failed morale, pinning, and fear tests that they are called upon to take.

    (2) Artisan of War: Just as Perturabo took delight in the destruction of enemy citadels, so too did he take pleasure in the crafting of machines and weaponry. The warlord may count all his weapons as being Master-Crafted and all models within the Warlord's detachment that are Champions may have one master-crafted weapon of the controlling player's choice.

    (3) Tithes of Medrengard: Nearly all Iron Warrior warbands must pay fealty to their daemon-primarch's new homeworld of Medrengard. Whether it be slaves, material, or archeotech -- Medrengard always receives it's tithe. For one turn, once per game, the Iron Warriors Grand Company detachment may count all ordnance and blast template weapons as being twin-linked.This action must be decided at the beginning of the Iron Warrior Grand Company player's Shooting Phase.

    (4) Master of the Eternal Fortress: Few helped to build the Eternal Fortress as fervently and fanatically as this particular Warsmith, even Perturabo praising his work with three simple words...'It is good.' The warlord may take one Imperial Bastion fortification for free with no upgrades. If the player does not have an Imperial Bastion then this result may be re-rolled. If a specific mission does not allow for Fortifications, this Warlord Trait takes precedence and the Bastion may be placed as per the rules for deploying Fortifications.

    (5) Uncanny Tactician: Adaptation in the face of adversity -- it is the lesson drilled into the head of every Iron Warrior from the beginning of his training. How else does on best overcome citadels in a day? The Warlord has the Outflank special rule. The Warlord may nominate D3 friendly units to also have the Outflank special rule before the Deployment Phase.

    (6) The Iron Within: Strength is Iron and Iron is Strength! The Warlord may gain one extra Victory Point for each enemy vehicle or fortification he destroys personally, either through ranged or close combat attacks. If the Warlord successfully kills an enemy Warlord in a Challenge, he gains D3 additional Victory Points.

  • Iron Warriors Grand Company Special Rules

Siege SavantThis warrior has been tempered in the fire and death of over a thousand sieges and knows how to both take and defend any citadel. The model with this special rule may, after deployment but before the startof the First Turn, nominate D3 pieces of terrain in the enemy deployment zone; these pieces of terrain have their cover saves reduced by one (example: a Ruin normally provides a 4+ cover save. Siege Savant would reduce this to a 5+). The model with this special rule may also, after deployment but before the start of turn one, nominate D3 pieces of terrain in the controlling player's deployment zone; these pieces of terrain have their cover saves increased by one (example: a Ruin normally provides a 4+cover save. Siege Savant would increase this to a 3+). This ability may not be used to increase the cover save offered by Fortifications.

Lessons of PerturaboAs a potter molds clay with his hands, so too did Perturabo mold the minds of his commanders to match his ideal of siege warfare. The model with this special rule may add +1 to all penetration rolls made against Fortifications and adds +1 to all rolls on the Fortification Damage chart.

Mechanical MachinationA warsmith of the Iron Warriors must be as skilled in the arts of engineering a war engine as he is at destroying one. The model with this special rule may, in lieu of a shooting attack, target one enemy vehicle within 12. Make a shooting attack as normal. If the targeted enemy vehicle is hit, it suffers a single Strength 1 Haywire hit.

Breach FighterAll Iron Warriors hold precious the moment when a hole is blasted in an enemy's walls -for they will pour into the breach assault in exultation, glorifying in close quarters combat. The model or unit with this special rule may fire Overwatch shooting attacks at Ballistic Skill 2 (instead of 1) and may re-roll failed armour saves in the first round of any close combat.

Master TacticianThis warrior has earned his scars and victorious by grinding upwards through the ranks, taking every lesson ever learned in battle with him onto the next. The model with this special rule may, before deployment, nominate D3 units in his army. These nominated units have the Infiltrate special rule.

Cunning BrawlerThere are many skilled warriors among the ranks of the Iron Warriors and other Chaos Space Marine warbands; but it is only the truly cunning that survive for long to prosecute the Long War. The innate instincts of this warrior have led him to preternatural levels of ability in close combat. A model with this special rule has a 4+ Invulnerable Save while engaged in close combat. Also, a model with this special rule may, when accepting or giving a Challenge in close combat, pick which enemy character orindependent the model faces in that Challenge. If there is only one enemy character or independent character to face, then in the first round of close combat in that Challenge, the model with this special rule adds +1 to it's Initiative.

Mind Over MetalBy sheer force of will, this individual has retained his wits under the brutal monotony of being within an iron shell for millenia beyond count. This model may perform Overwatch with all available

  • weapons, except it's battle cannon.Lord of the DaemonforgeFew understand the creation of a machine and its binding with the daemonic such as this individual. If you take Chengrel as your warlord, then Defilers, Hellbrutes, Forgefiends, and Maulderfiends are Troops choices as well as Heavy Support choices.

HellforgedEven daemons can be made to work metal with hammer and anvil. All Penetrating Hits made against a model with this special rule are automatically reduced to Glancing Hits.

Domination of the MachineWhereas the tenets of the Martian Priesthood would preach about the necessity of appeasing the Spirit of the Machine, a Warpsmith knows how foolhardy and weak such doctrine truly is. You do not beg a machine for its help; you use it as you will, bending its purpose to suit the user's need. And if a machine needs to be truly dominated, there is always the act of embedding a daemon inside its metal skin. In each Shooting Phase, instead of firing his weapons, an Iron Warriors Warpsmith may choose to either repair a single friendly, damaged vehicle, curse a single enemy vehicle, or bolster a single unit's invulnerable save. The Iron Warriors Warpsmith cannot use this ability if he has gone to ground or is falling back.

To repair a vehicle, the Iron Warriors Warpsmith must be in base contact with it or embarked upon it. Roll a D6. If the result is 5 or more, you may either restore a Hull Point lost easlier in the battle or repair a Weapon Destroyed or Immobilized result suffered earlier in the battle, effective immediately. Add +1 to this roll for the Iron Warrior Warpsmith's mechatendrils. If the Iron Warrior Warpsmith is accompanied by a Dark Servitor Retinue, add +1 for each Dark Servitor within the unit, to a maximum roll of 2+. If, when rolling this repair roll, a natural, unmodified 6 is rolled on the D6, the Iron Warriors Warpsmith may repair something a second time, such as an additional hull point, repair an additional Weapon Destroyer or Immobilized result that was suffered earlier in the battle.

To curse a vehicle, the Warpsmith can target a single enemy vehicle or vehicle squadron. Roll To Hit as normal against the enemy vehicle or vehicle squadron using the Iron Warriors Warpsmith's Ballistic Skill. If the curse hits, the vehicle suffers a single S1 hit with the Haywire special rule and all of that vehicle's weapons have the Gets Hot special rule until the end of its next turn. If the curse hits a vehicle squadron, the effects of the curse are allocated to the closestvehicle within the squadron to the Warpsmith.

In the shooting phase, in lieu of making a shooting attack, the Warpsmith may attempt to increase the invulnerable save of a single friendly unit within 12 of the model. Select one friendly unit within 12 and roll a D6. If the result is a 5 or more, you may increase the selected unit's invulnerable save by 1, to a maximum of a 2++ invulnerable save. This bolstering of a friendly unit's invulnerable save can only be given if the selected unit already has its own invulnerable save.

Gabion MakerEven when advancing it is wise to pause and build earthworks for a stronger position in the face of the enemy. It's good to have a bastion to assault from. A unit with this special rule increases their cover save by +1 if they remained stationary in the previous movement phase. This bonus remains until the unit moves. If a single model or models moved within the unit, but not the entire unit, this effect is not removed.

  • Barrage of WrathOnce an enemy unit has been targeted and earmarked for destruction by the Support Squads of the IronWarriors, there is no escape from oblivion. A unit with this special rule may, once per game, fire their ranged weapons during any Shooting Phase and count them as having the Twin-linked and Shred special rules.

Battlefield EngineersEvery Iron Warrior is as much a battlefield engineer as they are a warrior able to do work with spade as well as boltgun. A unit with this special rule may, once per game, construct a counts-as Aegis Defense Line (no upgrades) in the Movement Phase. If they choose to do this, the unit cannot move, shoot, or declare charges for that Game Turn.

This counts-as Aegis Defense Line (ADL) must be set up as follows: The sections of the ADL must all be touching/connected. The sections must all be placed within one inch of a model from the unit that created the ADL. The sections of the ADL may be placed anywhere that allows them to stand freely, even upon impassible, difficult, or dangerous terrain.

Iron DisciplineThese men fear the wrath of the Iron Warriors more than anything else in the universe. Only a man or woman who has been born and lived beneath the rule of the Iron Warriors understands their terror better than any other. If a unit with this special rule loses 25% of its starting model strength (8 models),it immediately gains the Fearless special rule until the end of the game turn. In the unit's next movement phase, it must take a Leadership test. If the test is passed, the unit keeps the Fearless special rule for the rest of the game. If the Leadership test is failed, then the unit loses the Fearless special rule and moves, shoots, and assaults as normal.

MassacreFew know the carnage of close combat as well as these warriors. Only those devoted to Khorne can possibly experience the joy and ecstasy that these warriors have while knee deep in the blood of their enemies. A unit with this special rule may re-roll all failed To Hit and To Wound rolls in the first round of any close combat in a turn in which they charged.

Hatred (Sons of Dorn)There are no hatreds more pure than that of the Iron Warriors for the Imperial Fists and all their varied kin. Born from the beginning in the Great Crusade and then forged and sharpened in the heat ofthe Horus Heresy, this enmity for the Sons of Dorn is without end. Models with this special rule gain the Hatred special rule against all Imperial Fist and Imperial Fist successor chapter detachments, units, armies, and models.

Ichor Blood..........................10 pts Gift of Mutation...................10 pts Aura of Dark Glory..............15 pts Combat Familiar...................10 pts Whispers of the Primarch.....20 pts

Whispers of the PrimarchIf an Iron Warrior is particularly devoted to the will of his Primarch, then it is possible that the words from the lips of Perturabo will reach him. A model with Whispers of the Primarch may, once per game, at the start of any close combat phase, count all his attacks as taking place at Initiative 10 even if they would normally be reduced by other means.

Chaos ArtefactsA model can replace one weapon with one of the following. Only one of each Chaos Artefact may be taken per detachment.

Relic of Olympia.........................30 pts Gift of the Pneumachina.............100 pts Trophy of Istvaan........................35 pts Legion Iron..................................70 pts Tyrant's Targeting Reticule..........25 pts

Relic of OlympiaA medallion really, a small disk, but inscribed upon the metal is the ancient Oath of Moment that Perturabo took before the Emperor when he first set foot upon Olympia. It is a constant reminder of thehatred and anger all Iron Warriors feel, furthering their desire to prosecute the Long War.

The Relic of Olympia grants its holder the It Will Not Die (4+) special rule and the Rampage special rule.

Gift of the PneumachinaWhen the Horus Heresy began the Adeptus Mechanicus was split in twain as much as the Astartes Legions, perhaps even more so. The new Dark Mechanicus, as they are called mockingly by their Imperium foes, but calling themselves the Pneumachina, have strong ties to the Iron Warriors. In return for the manpower of slaves and material that they deliver to Chaos Forgeworlds, the Pneumachina often present gifts to worthy Warsmiths. The Gift of the Pneumachina is a single KastelanRobot (as seen in Codex Adeptus Mechanicus). It is a guardian for the Warlord that purchases it. It doesnot prevent the Warlord from joining other units. It does prevent the Warlord from embarking in a transport. It is not able to use Kastelan Battle Protocols. It has the following profile:

    Kastelan RobotWS: 3 BS: 3 S: 6 T: 7 W: 3 I: 2 A: 2 Ld: 7 Sv: 3+Unit Type: Monsterous CreatureUnit Composition: 1 Kastelan RobotWargear: Kastelan Battlehide, Carapace-mounted heavy phosphor blaster, Two power fists

  • Trophy of Istvaan

Such was the great number of Loyalist Astartes that were killed that day, that the true origin of this particular war trophy cannot be given. But all Space Marines who see this piece of wargear being wielded in the hands of an Iron Warrior instantly know that it does not belong to him.

The Trophy of Istvaan is a Storm Shield and replaces one weapon from the model's wargear list to take. The Trophy of Istvaan also grants the Feel No Pain (3+) special rule. Any Space Marine army that is facing an Iron Warriors Grand Company with a model with this particular Chaos Artefact (Codex: Adeptus Astartes Space Marines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Dark Angels) gain the following special rule: Hatred (Model With Trophy of Istvaan).

    Legion Aritficer Iron

The crafting of weapons, armour, and wargear is an integral part of any Iron Warrior's daily routine. Some warriors have spent millenia crafting their own armor. Others have simply taken possession of a fallen comrade's belongings after all, the dead have no use for such things.

The Legion Aritificer Iron is a specially crafted suit of Power Armour that grants a 2+ armour save. It also increases the model's Toughness value by 2 points.

    Tyrant's Targeting Reticule

It is a mistake to believe that it was the Iron Warriors who brought their love of heavy guns to their legion, but rather Perturabo who brought it to the Iron Warriors a relic of his war to unit Olympia solong ago. This particular trophy was won after Perturabo killed the Tyrant and took possession of his palace, overcoming the strongest fortifications Olympia then had to offer.

The Tyrant's Targeting Reticule is a special piece of wargear. If the model with this wargear did not move during the Movement Phase and is within Line of Sight of an enemy unit being targeted by a barrage and/or blast weapon, then the friendly unit firing the barrage and/or blast weapon may use this model's Ballistic Skill when deciding the final placement of the blast marker.
