Upper West Side Song Swap With Featured Performer Pat Wictor: Sunday, June 9th; 58pm
The Upper West Side Song Swap will have the distinct privilege and pleasure of presenting Pat Wictor as our final guest performer of the season. Pat first burst on the folk and acoustic scene as an innovative slide guitarist known for fresh and memorable interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. He has since made his mark as a singersongwriter penning lean and poetic songs that honor and subvert rural blues and gospel traditions. For seven years he toured as one third of Brother Sun, the powerful harmonizing trio with Joe Jencks and Greg Greenway, garnering critical acclaim, and two #1 CDs on the Folk DJ charts. His latest solo release, This is Absolutely Real: Visions and Versions of Phil Ochs, was nominated for an Independent Music Award in the Best Tribute Album category. Pat plays fingerpicking and slide guitar, and he’s especially known for his lapsteel slide guitar playing. “Unquestionably, anyone who has ever heard a Wictor show will permanently place him in the company of the best in the genre Harry Manx, Kelly Joe Phelps and Ed Gerhard." Frank Matheis, TheCountryBlues.com. As always, there will be time for everyone to perform a song, tell a story or joke or recite a poem. Archie Fisher: Thursday, June 27th; 7:30pmMaster guitarist Archie Fisher is one of Scotland’s foremost folksinger/ songwriters. He is known throughout the U.K. as the host of BBC Radio Scotland’s awardwinning 'Travelling Folk' programme, which he presented for over 25 years. Recognized for his contributions to Scottish folk music, in 2007 he was inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame and in 2006 was awarded an MBE for services to traditional music. The most recent recognition of his art came in 2008 when he was granted the Tradition Bearers Award from the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Canada. Archie was born in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three professional singers, Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher. Constant music, combined with his father’s appreciation of many musical styles (opera, music hall, traditional ballads) had a strong impact on Archie’s musical development, while his mother, a native Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebrides, was a strong influence on the lyrical quality of his singing and songwriting.
