Ireland’s Energy Balance 2012 Ireland’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Royal Irish Academy 9th October 2013
Revisions & Changes
• Coal figures revised 2009 – ‘11 on better data from suppliers
• Milled Peat
– Resolved double counting issue in briquetting
– Allocated some peat to Food Beverage Tobacco based on ETS
data
– Production of peat was down due to the record breaking rainfall
in the summer of 2012. This also resulted in a large stock draw
Revisions and changes
• Sod Peat
– estimate no longer provided by Bord Na Móna due to new legislation.
– Estimated 20% reduction on 2011 figure until a new methodology is
established.
• Petroleum Coke
– 2003 to 2009 some sales to commercial and residential consumers
were actually sales to other solid fuel providers. This was corrected.
– 2005 to 2011 now using ETS figures for Industry consumption instead
monthly surveys.
Revisions and changes
• Hydro – pumped storage back online in Feb 2012
• Waste – electricity production reported for the first time under for
Renewable & Non-Renewable Waste due to a new waste-to-
energy plant coming online in 2012.
• Natural Gas
– 2004 to 2011 revised with latest data
– 2006 to 2012 revisions resulting from improved methodology
around production and stock change agreed with BGE
Revisions and changes
• Electricity
– Now using CER retail market report and market shares to split
final consumption of electricity into sectors
• Bitumen
– Revised calorific value for Bitumen as the formula was
incorrectly using calorific value of Bituminous Coal
