13.2 Definitions of Markets Covered in the Report
13.2.1 Wound Care Management
The wound care management market comprises of dressings, equipment and other aids to
prevent, treat wounds and also quicken or promote wound healing. The wound care management
market covers traditional wound management, advanced wound management, Negative Pressure
Wound Therapy (NPWT), wound closure devices, ostomy drainage bags, pressure relief devices,
compression therapy, tissue engineering and automated suturing devices.
13.2.1.1 Advanced Wound Management
Advanced wound management involves use of dressing products combined with drug formulations
to provide enhanced healing properties. These dressings provide a moist and active dressings
environment for optimum healing. Active dressings are based on biomaterials such as collagens.
Similarly, moist dressings include materials such as hydrogels. This category includes semi-
permeable films, foams, hydrofibres, hydrocolloids, hydrogels, alginates, collagens and wound
contact layer dressings.
Alginates
This dressing includes alginates derived from the naturally occurring calcium and sodium salt of
alginic acid produced by a family of brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae). Alginate dressing forms a
moist gel in the presence of wound exudates. Alginate dressings fall into two kinds: those
containing 100% calcium alginate and those that contain a combination of calcium with sodium
alginate, usually in a ratio of 80:20. Both types are covered. One unit refers to pack of 10 Alginate
dressings.

13.2.1.3 Compression Therapy
Compression therapy involves static compression devices such as compression bandages, ready-
to-wear legwear, anti embolism stockings, diabetic shoes and dynamic compression devices such
as intermittent pumps and segmental/sequential pumps to treat vascular diseases such as venous
ulcers.
Dynamic Compression Therapy
Dynamic compression is mechanical compression applied by a mechanical pumping device
(pumps and sleeves). The pressure is applied starting from the foot proceeding towards the lower
leg and ending just below the knee.
Intermittent Pumps
Intermittent pumps provide compression therapy by compressing and decompressing the leg. The
pump inflates and deflates the sleeve in one motion and with uniform pressure along the sleeve.
One unit refers to a single pump.
Segmental/Sequential Pumps
Segmental pumps use a multi-chambered garment, that is filled sequentially, to, provide
compression therapy by compressing and decompressing the leg. The pressure applied on the
segments of the sleeves is uniform but the segments are deflated and inflated individually. One
unit refers to a single pump.
Static Compression Therapy
Static compression therapy involves application of graduated pressure starting from the ankle, up
the lower leg and ending below the knee. The distal portion of the bandage applies greater
pressure and the pressure decreases gradually towards the proximal portion of the bandage.
Generally the pressure averages between 30 mmHg and 40 mmHg. The exact pressure varies
according to the type of garments or stockings used. Static compression therapy devices are
segmented into ready-to-wear legwear, anti embolism stockings, diabetic shoes and compression
bandages.
Anti Embolism Stockings
Anti-embolism stockings are designed for bed bound patients to help prevent blood from pooling in
the veins of the leg leading to blood clots. These stockings are apt for short duration of wear during
hospitalization to deliver gradient compression ranging from 12 to 20 mmHg. These stockings are
normally available only in white and have an opening on the underside of the toes which can be
uncomfortable while walking. One unit refers to a pair of anti embolism stockings.
Compression Bandages
Compression bandages involve deliberate application of pressure to treat venous disorders of the
lower limbs like edema and swelling. Based on the level of compression produced, compression
bandages have been classified as light compression bandages, moderate compression bandages,

diabetes. One unit refers to a pair of diabetic shoes.
Ready-to-Wear Legwear
Ready-to-wear legwear are exceptionally durable and comfortable and provide low to medium
level of compression that ensures continuous blood flow throughout the veins. These are typically
prescribed by a medical practitioner or an extended care facility to patients after discharge from
hospital. These can be worn comfortably for long duration of time. One unit refers to a pair of
ready-to-wear legwear.

NPWT disposables are consumables used with NPWT equipment. It includes canister, dressing
and tubing. One unit is equal to one disposable kit.
NPWT Equipment
It is a non-invasive system that creates and delivers a negative pressure at the wound site
enhancing the vascularity and oxygen content of the wound. A tube decompresses a foam
dressing, continuously or intermittently to remove the exudates from a wound. One unit refers to
single equipment.
