Info about the Camp (aims, tasks and activities – work, leisure and visits)

The camp will take place in the village of Teixeira/Atenor which lies in adjoining area the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional (PNDI)(Douro International Natural Park), about 5 Km from the village of Sendim (Miranda do Douro). Summer is often dry and characterised by notorious temperature swings – very high during the day (35ºC) and relatively low in the evening (10º-15ºC). The main goals of this workcamp are enhance the biodiversity of our Center, and improve the landscape for generations of donkeys and visitors to come; to enable the discovery of the Miranda Plateau, a unique rural region, rich in natural beauty, biodiversity, culture and traditions; and bringing together the young participants and the local community, therefore promoting intercultural (urban/rural, international/national) and intergenerational (youngsters/the elderly) encounters and exchanges. The tasks planned for the enhance the biodiversity of our Center will be attract birds - for birds to visit or live in your Center they need food and shelter, so we will preserve trees and plant shrubs that provide these, add a butterfly and a pollinator garden – we will increase the plants that attract and support them, add water to our Center – such a birdbath or a pond or stream makes it very attractive to birds and other wildlife, add a log, build a rock pile or preserve a snag - a pile of logs or rocks can provide a home for

wildlife, add birdhouses, bat houses or native pollinator houses – providing them good homes - welcoming to beneficial birds and

insects that keep pest insects under control and so we reduced the use of pesticides and avoid preventative spraying in the Center becoming organic farmers, preparing the meals (rotating task). As for leisure time, there are several activities planned for the participants to get to know the beautiful local landscapes, the rich cultural traditions and the local community as: trekking and hiking around Atenor, trip to the Fraga do Puio viewpoint and to the Terra Mater Ecomuseum, visiting the Miranda Donkey Centre and try a walk with a donkey, trip to and night out at Palaçoulo traditional festivity, visiting Miranda do Douro, cinema nights, traditional games with the local community.

Help us create and caretake new forests in areas damaged by human activity and wildfires in Portugal. Together, we will plant

the rain - shaping the landscape, feeding the soil, and acting to prevent fire, so that young forests can survive the hot summers and offer shade, water, and natural spaces to future generations of people and wildlife. You can expect to be engaged in the following activities and tasks: Preparing for reforestation: Working on an ecologically degraded area, we will use techniques for soil and water management to

create conditions in which trees can survive. We will start a tree nursery, and start planting local species in a few places where watering is possible. Fire Prevention: We will decrease risk of fire in a young native oak woodland, protecting and watering young trees, cleaning out dead

branches, preparing for new plantations, and making signs with information about the reforested areas. Event Support: We will help the association with the Open Day and Pizza Night events that will be happening during the Work Camp,

by preparing spaces for the events, making crafts from natural materials (wool, willow, cork, wood) for the reforestation fundraiser, and creating educ-art: images, music, poetry etc. to present at events to educate the public about the value of native forest. Meal preparation and maintenance of collective spaces: We will assist the chef in preparing meals for the group; rotating

daily tasks necessary to maintain health, well-being, and the functioning of the camp - cleaning, watering, composting, etc. In this camp we will also explore together the relationship between nature and culture, through these activities: Nature Connection: We will have a day out and a few afternoons to visit places in the Algarve that are protected nature areas and

places of traditional culture, and have opportunities to do walks, bycicle rides, and canoeing close to the camp. Group dynamics: We will start and end the day with opportunities for sharing and group decision-making, and everyone will

participate in planning events, in observing, presenting, and evaluating the work camp results. Social and leisure activities: Together we will prepare evening activities; Cultural nights sharing cuisine and

culture of participants’ countries; Games nights, and celebrations. This is an opportunity to empower yourself and get inspired by nature, gaining the skills you need to reforest the world.
