Why might the IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?

• The IPC would be appropriate as they have a lot of experience with working with music magazines such as ‘NME’

•They have a lot of knowledge and experience on publishing and advertising music magazines and knowing what features in a magazine would be appropriate for their target audience.

• The IPC would be an reliable publisher as it has been running for many years and publish lots of different magazines.

• They publish different types of magazine so they know what will suit the target audience a new music magazine is aimed at.

• They publish many successful music magazines such as ‘NME’ therefore is more likely to make new magazines just as successful as they know what sells to the readers and how to do it.

What sort of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish?

• The IPC is likely to publish rock/indie magazines as they have a lot of experience working with this specific genre of music as they have published ‘NME’ for many years. This means they have already built up an fan base for this genre of music and knows how to publish a magazine to fit their readers interests.

• Although they have experience with working with a rock/indie genre of music, the IPC may want to publish a magazine with a completely different genre of music to create a new ‘niche market.’ This new genre could be a pop magazine like ‘Smash Hits’ or ‘Top of the Pops’ as they tend to be aimed at females. Seeing as the IPC publish many magazines aimed at women, this may be an appropriate genre as they know how to attract and sell magazines to women. Also, the pop genre has a very big target audience, which means that the magazine is more likely to make a profit and sell many copies.

Why Might Alternative Publishers Like Bauer Be Appropriate?

• They publish more music magazines than the IPC, like ‘Mojo’, ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Q’ which means they have more experience working with different genres of music. Also they know how to cater for music magazines and how to make them sell to the target audience and become very successful magazines.

• They are more likely to publish music magazines aimed at pop, rock and indie genres.

• They cover a wider age range of target audiences.

• Bauer publishes magazines at lower prices than the IPC, therefore makes the magazines more affordable for the target audience.
