Avaya Online UPSs Increase the Reliability of Your Communications Systems
Avaya Online UPSs
Avaya’s online UPS solutions from 1000 VA to
20 kVA can help you avoid damage due to power
problems. Utility irregularities (such as spikes,
surges, brownouts, blackouts, etc.) are corrected
before they are passed on to telecommunications
and networking systems. Without a UPS, power
problems are not corrected and can cause
devastating problems to your data, systems and
equipment.
Increase System Reliability
Avaya UPSs increase your customers’ systems
reliability, protect their hardware and data, and
provide backup power. Avaya online UPSs:
•regulatevoltage
•offeradvancedbatterymanagement
capabilities
•arecompatiblewithallotherAvayaAC
products.
UPS Selection Criteria
Two important factors to consider when choosing
a UPS are:
1. The size of your load.
2. The amount of backup time needed for your
systems.
For example, in the event of an extended power
outage you may want to have your system
programmed to automatically shutdown your less
critical equipment to conserve power for your
phones. Also, the location of your equipment may
determine the number of UPSs needed; sometimes
it is simpler to place a few UPSs strategically
throughout your business than it is to connect
everything to a single UPS. (Access a quick UPS
sizing tool at eaton.com/avaya.)
The Online Advantage
Online UPSs are the optimal solution for customers’
telecommunications systems, call centers,
medium to large networks and servers. The Avaya
online design provides the highest level of power
protection available and is the ideal choice for
communications systems and critical computing
applications, such as ECLIPS Solutions.
Online UPSs protect against all types of power
contamination and continuously create clean sine
wave power for your customers’ systems. Brownouts,
power spikes, surges, line noise, frequency
variations, and other power problems are eliminated
before they reach the connected equipment.
How does an online UPS work? First, incoming
utility AC power is converted to DC power. While a
small portion of this DC power is used to charge the
battery, the rest travels to the inverter. The inverter
then produces new, continuous 120 volt sine wave
AC power, which keeps the communications systems
up and running. With online technology, the inverter
operates continuously, regardless of the state of the
utility power.
With the online design, the batteries are held in
reserve and are available when the customer needs
them most—during a complete power outage. The
Avaya online design uses the battery less than any
other UPS technology. In fact, it only goes to battery
if the voltage dips below 80 volts or above 144
volts, thus increasing the life of the battery and the
UPS itself. See page 5 for additional information.

9 Power Problems and Their UPS Solutions
Power Problem Definition Cause and Results UPS Solution
(1) Power Outage A total loss of utility power
Can be caused by a number of events: lightning strikes, downed power lines, grid over-demands, accidents and natural disasters.
Standby Line-interactive Online
(2) Power Sag Short term low voltage
Triggered by the startup of large loads, utility switching, utility equipment failure, lightning and power service that’s too small for the demand. In addition to the crashes, sags can damage hardware
Standby Line-interactive Online
(3) Power Surge Short term high voltage
With voltages above 110% of nominal, surges can be triggered by a rapid reduction in power loads, heavy equipment being turned off, or by utility switching. The results can potentially damage hardware.
Standby Line-interactive Online
(4) Brownout Reduced line voltage for extended periods of a few minutes to a few days
Can be caused by intentional utility voltage reduction to conserve power during peak demand periods or other heavy loads that exceed supply capacity
Line-interactive Online
(5) Electrical Line Noise High frequency waveform that piggybacks on the line waveform
Can be caused by either RFI or EMI interference generated by transmitters, welding devices, SCR driven printers, lightning, etc
Line-interactive Online
(6) High Voltage Spike Instant and dramatic increase in line voltage
Can be caused by lightning strikes and can send line voltages to levels in excess of 6,000 volts. A spike almost always results in data loss or hardware damage to unprotected systems.
Online
(7) Frequency Variation A change in frequency stability
Resulting from generator or small co-generation sites being loaded and unloaded. Frequency loss, system crashes and equipment damage.
Online
(8) Switching Transient Instantaneous high voltage increase impressed on the power line waveform
Normal duration is shorter than a spike and generally falls in the range of nanoseconds.
Online
(9) Harmonic Distortion Distortion of the normal line waveform, generally transmitted by nonlinear loads.
Switch-mode power supplies, variable speed motors and drives, copiers and fax machines are examples of nonlinear loads. Harmonic distortion can cause communication errors, overheating and hardware damage.

Version 16, 07/09
There are three main UPS technologies used in the market place; standby, line-interactive and online. Avaya online UPSs protect your customers from the nine most common power problems present in any work environment. They provide superior protection for communications and networking systems with extended battery holdover times. Below is a brief explanation of each UPS topology.
Online UPS Technology
Online UPSs are designed to provide complete power protection. They isolate equipment from all types of power problems by continuously regulating the AC power for your systems. Online UPSs isolate equipment from harmonic distortions and are strongly recommended for critical applications that must meet the 5% maximum harmonic requirement (stated in major computer manufacturer specifications and installation guides).
Battery conservation is an essential factor for a customer deciding to purchase an online UPS. An online UPS uses the battery less often than any other UPS technology, therefore increasing the life expectancy of the battery. Avaya’s robust, state-of-the-art online UPS provides superior protection for your communication and networking systems. Note: Online UPSs provide protection from all 9 power problems listed.
Line-interactive UPS Technology
Line-interactive UPSs offer basic power protection at mid-range prices. In addition to protection against power failures, power sags and power surges, line-interactive UPSs protect against brownouts and electrical line noise. This design offers voltage regulation by “boosting” the utility voltage up or down before passing it through to your electronic system.
Unlike standby models, a line-interactive UPS regulates incoming voltage fluctuations. As a result, they provide a higher degree of protection. In comparison to an online UPS, line-interactive models do not provide the same level of isolation from power disturbances. Line-interactive models are often a very cost-effective solution for small-to-medium size businesses and branch offices. Note: Line-interactive UPSs provide protection from power problems 1 – 5 (see page 4).
Standby UPS Technology
Standby UPSs are intended to provide a low price solution for power failures, power sags and power surges. Utility power is provided during normal operation. Utility voltage and frequency changes are not regulated by the UPS and pass through to the equipment.
When voltage or frequency changes become too severe, the UPS converts DC battery power to AC power to run the equipment. Standby UPSs provide protection from simple power problems as described in items 1, 2 & 3. Note: Standby UPSs do not provide protection from power problems 4-9 (see page 4).

1. Converts alternating current (AC) to direct
current (DC) then regenerates AC to the
protected equipment
Guarantees total isolation between input voltage
and the protected equipment, and constantly
provides voltage and frequency regulation.
2. Inverter is online during normal operation •Assuresapurevoltageandfrequencyoutput
to the protected equipment all the time, not
just during power outages.
•PoweroutputfromUPSremainswithin
±3% of nominal voltage.
3. Zero transfer time when switching from
utility to battery
Prevents power loss to the protected equipment
when utility power is interrupted.
4. Wide input voltage window (85-144 Vac
on low voltage models and 176-276 Vac
on high voltage models)
Results in negligible battery usage during
brownouts; thus a longer battery service life,
increased reliability, and reduced maintenance.
5. Automatic internal bypass circuit Provides alternate power path to protected
equipment keeping the load on in the event
of UPS failure or equipment overload.
6. Low output voltage distortion (THD <5%) Eliminates damage to protected equipment’s
power supply.

1. What equipment will this UPS protect?
In order to size a UPS properly, you must know
what is going to be plugged into it. If there are
multiple pieces of equipment, you need to add
them up to determine their total VA rating and
the appropriate UPS. It is also very important
to choose a UPS with the correct output
receptacles.
The output receptacles are the receptacles into
which the equipment being powered by the
UPS will plug. A hardwired output is available
on 6000 VA and larger UPS models. Hardwired
outputs are generally useful if you want the UPS
output to be distributed via electrical panels.
Using an electrical distribution panel allow for
flexibility with receptacles types. If there is no
other UPS that fits your receptacle and power
requirements, you may need to hardwired the
UPS. Hardwired UPS models typically require
the use of a certified electrician to wire the
UPS to the electrical distribution panel and
this could be a more costly option for some
customers.
2. Can I install small UPS models behind larger UPS
models?
If you are installing a smaller UPS behind a
larger UPS, you must consider the total potential
power of the smaller UPS as well as other
loads that will be powered by the larger UPS.
For example, if you are plugging a 1500 VA
UPS into a 10,000 VA UPS, you must consider
the 1500 VA load of the smaller UPS rather
than just the load that is plugged into it. In
addition, the larger UPS must be at least five
times larger than the smaller UPS. This design
guideline must be followed due to charging
capacity that may be required by the smaller
UPS, any anomalies associated with the building
power, and to avoid overheating or potential over
loading of the larger UPS which may result in
failure of the all UPS models in the string.
3. Can I use a UPS and a generator together?
Yes. Similar to a UPS, a generator provides
backup power. However, when utility power
fails a UPS detects the condition and switches
to battery backup to keep supplying power to
the protected loads. Meanwhile, the auxiliary
generator starts up within 10-15 seconds; time
may vary by generator type. However, a generator
does not actively condition or regulate voltage
the way a UPS does. The use of a UPS provides
the seamless transfer to battery power and the
generator provides the long-term backup power.
In addition, a generator might not regulate
the output voltage properly when powering a
lightly loaded UPS. Is your UPS carrying loads
at 80-90% load of its power rating or closer
to 15-20% of its rating? Some generators are
designed with intelligent input filters to mitigate
this effect, but this still must be taken into
consideration.
For UPS models with power ratings below 150
kVA, you want to oversize your generator by as
much as 200% because very small generators
don’t often provide enough kinetic energy to
provide a smooth transition. You can't size a
generator in a 1:1 match to the UPS and expect
efficient results. As a general rule of thumb,
auxiliary generators will be sized at 1.5 times
the size of the output rating of the UPS in kW,
but it should be somewhat higher for gasoline or
gas powered generators.
4. How much battery backup time does the
customer want?
Does your customer want 5 minutes? An hour?
6 hours? This question is critical to sizing the
UPS properly. Adding batteries to the UPS
provides additional battery runtime only,
not added capacity.
Avaya UPS Design Guidelines
The following design guidelines must be reviewed and followed prior to ordering the appropriate UPS.
10
eaton.com/avaya
Version 16, 07/09
5. Always be sure which wall receptacle is required
to plug in the UPS.
Only UPSs with power ratings up to 1500 VA
plug into a standard 15 amp wall outlet. All
others require a larger receptacle, which must
be installed by an electrician. Things will go
more smoothly if your customers are not waiting
for this to be done after all of their equipment
has arrived. Most small computers and rack-
mounted computers run on normal 120 volt, 15
amp electrical service. Some computers have
a power cord that requires a higher voltage of
208V or 240V. In such cases, you will need a
3000 VA or larger UPS.
6. Find out the dimensions of the UPS and include
any battery cabinets.
Make sure that the installation site has enough
space available.
7. Does the UPS have adequate ventilation?
Avaya UPS models use internal fans to cool the
UPS. You should not install the UPS in a sealed
container or small, sealed room.
8. Ensure that the UPS can be placed in its final
position.
Will the UPS components fit through doors?
Are there any stairs? Please consult the
eaton.com/avaya Web site for detailed
UPS dimensions and specifications.
9. Is the floor strong enough to support the UPS and
battery cabinets?
The UPS and its battery cabinets can be heavy
so make sure the site has the proper floor
loading capacity.
10. Check to see if there is an adequate electrical
supply near the UPS.
Compare UPS fuse ratings (amps) and breaker
types and whether any electrical work may be
needed (i.e. cabling to the UPS terminal block
input). The site may have its own electrical
contractors.
11. When using a hardwired UPS, it is absolutely
critical that the installation wiring be performed
by a certified electrician.
A hardwiring option is available on 6000 VA and
larger UPS models. For details associated with
wiring the hardwired UPS, please consult your
UPS manual or visit eaton.com/avaya for further
assistance. If a power failure occurs with
an incorrectly wired UPS, it could destroy the
power supplies of any equipment that is being
powered by that UPS.

Frequently Asked Questions: General
1. What happens if the UPS is overloaded? For
example, if the protected equipment and/or load
draws more current than the UPS can provide.
The UPS transfers the load to bypass (for a few
minutes) until the overload condition is reversed
If the overload condition continues, the UPS
automatically shuts down.
2. What causes a UPS to be overloaded?
There are two possible answers: (1) the UPS was
undersized (e.g. the load is rated at 1200 VA
but a 1000 VA UPS was provided), or (2) the
customer plugs more equipment into the UPS
than it was designed to handle.
3. How do you convert watts to VA?
Multiply watts by the power factor 1.3.
1000W = 1300 VA
4. How do you convert amps to VA?
Multiply amps by voltage (120 volts in the US).
10A x 120V = 1200 VA
5. What is the difference between single-phase and
three-phase power?
The AC electric power sent out from a power
station is commonly three-phase. Single-phase
power can be drawn from a connection across
one of these lines and a neutral line. Virtually
all PCs and small electrical devices use single-
phase power available from standard 10A or
15A power points. Higher power industrial
motors or large air-conditioning systems often
use three-phase power and cannot be powered
by plugging them into standard 10A or 15A
power points.
6. How long does it take for the UPS batteries to
recharge?
On average it takes 10 times the discharge time
for the UPS batteries to recover. (A 30-minute
battery discharge requires about 300 minutes to
recharge.) After each power outage, the recharge
process begins immediately. It is important
to note that the load is fully protected while
the batteries are recharging. However, if the
batteries are needed during the recharge time,
the holdover time available will be less than
it would have been if the batteries were fully
charged.
7. How are the phone systems affected by
inconsistent power?
Fluctuating power is a waste of valuable time
and money. If customers expose their telephone
systems (and any other electronic equipment)
to inconsistent utility power, they are vulnerable
to hardware and software damage, data
corruption and communication breakdown. The
time and cost of replacing equipment, as well
as the business lost during breakdown and
replacement, can greatly affect a company’s
bottom line.
8. Where can I get technical help?
Contact your territory representative, call the
Avaya UPS Hotline at 1-800-322-4UPS (4877),
or visit eaton.com/avaya.
9. Can the UPS supporting my S8700 notify me via
e-mail when it is running on battery power?
Yes. The Web/SNMP card in your UPS can
send out email messages to up to 4 customer-
selected addresses.
10. What is the average lifespan of the batteries used
in the UPS?
The typical life of batteries in an Avaya online
UPS is 4 to 6 years. Overall service life depends
on a number of factors, including temperature
and the number of battery discharges.
12

Frequently Asked Questions: General – continued
11. Does the UPS need to have a load on it to charge
its batteries? My understanding that the UPS should
have a minimum of 10% load for UPS to charge its
batteries.
Once connected to a standard supply of
electricity (via input plug or hardwiring), your
UPS should charge its batteries regardless of
how much load, if any, is attached to it.
12. If my UPS is in storage, how often should I charge
the batteries?
If a UPS is in storage, we recommend that
you plug it in every 6 months to prevent the
batteries from becoming fully discharged and
significantly shortening their service life. We
recommend that you follow the same guidelines
for charging external batteries.
13. I came across a spare, unused Avaya UPS that we
had in storage. Is it still operable?
If the UPS has been in storage for more than 6
months, the batteries inside your UPS may be
bad. If your UPS has been in storage without
any charge for longer than a year, it's likely that
the batteries need to be replaced.
14. How can you be sure UPS batteries are in good
condition in order to insure they have maximum
holdover in the event of a power failure? What
preventive maintenance procedures should be
done and how often should they be done?
The batteries used in the UPS and associated
battery modules and cabinets are sealed, lead-
acid batteries often referred to as maintenance-
free batteries. While this type of battery is
sealed and you do not need to check the fluid
level in the battery, they do require some
attention to assure proper operation. You should
inspect the UPS a minimum of once per year by
initiating a self-test of the UPS.
15. I already have surge protection. Why do I need
a UPS?
Surge protection will not keep your business
and phones operational during a blackout. In
addition, surge protectors do nothing to improve
the quality of power feeding your sensitive and
expensive telecom equipment. The Avaya UPS
provides perfect, clean power to your equipment
at all times. Over time, poor quality power will
degrade your equipment.
16. Does the Avaya online UPS condition or regulate
incoming voltage fluctuations?
Yes. The Avaya online UPS keeps the power
which it passes on to the connected load to a
very tight ±3% of nominal voltage and does so
without using battery power.
17. What is the smallest Avaya UPS I can get?
The smallest UPS that you can get is a 500
VA UPS model. It is labeled as an Eaton unit,
but it is a part of Avaya's product offering. The
smallest UPS with the Avaya label is rated at
1000 VA.
18. What’s the difference between a surge protector
and a UPS?
A surge protector provides just that—surge
protection. In addition to surge protection, a
UPS continually regulates incoming voltage and
provides battery backup in the event of a power
failure. You'll often see surge protectors plugged
into a UPS for added surge protection and
additional output receptacles.
19. How much capacity of a UPS should I use?
To allow for future expansion, we recommend
that you install a UPS at approximately 75%
capacity. In addition, the batteries degrade
over time so by oversizing you provide room for
error. In the avayaups.com sizing tool we have
included a “capacity used” column.
20. How is battery runtime impacted if I reduce the
load on the UPS?
There can be a significant increase in runtime.
Generally speaking, a UPS that provides 5
minutes at full load will provide 15 minutes at
half load.

Frequently Asked Questions: General – continued
21. What’s the difference between a generator and
a UPS? Would I ever use a UPS and a generator
together?
Similar to a UPS, a generator provides backup
power. However, it takes a while for the
generator to kick on in the event of a power
outage. By the time it gets going, the damage
has most likely been done. In addition, a
generator does not actively condition or regulate
voltage the way a UPS does. Many customers
often use both a UPS and a generator together.
The UPS provides the seamless transfer to
battery power and the generator provides the
long-term backup power.
22. Why is power quality such a problem today?
Today’s high-tech VoIP equipment is more
sensitive to electrical disturbances and are
more important to the critical functions of many
businesses than in the past. As a result, power
quality problems today are more frequent and
more costly than ever.
23. Are power quality problems always noticeable?
No. In many cases, disturbances can cause
imperceptible damage to circuits and other
components, a major cause of premature
equipment failure. Many power quality problems
go unresolved and result in lost revenue and
data.
24. How old is my UPS?
There is no way to determine the age of an
Avaya UPS by simply looking at it. However, all
Avaya UPS units have a rating label on them. If
you write down the serial number (S/N) and part
number (P/N) and email them to AvayaUPS@
Eaton.com or call us at 1.800.322.4877,
we will send the date that the UPS was
manufactured.
25. What is the difference between a BDM, PPDM, and
a PDM?
All three are essentially the same thing. They are
modules that allow you to replace a UPS without
shutting down the UPS or the equipment
connected to it. In addition, these modules
provide different sets of output receptacles:
1000-1500 VA UPS: BDM
(Bypass Distribution Module)
3000 VA UPS: PDM
(Power Distribution Module)
6000 VA UPS: PPDM
(PowerPass Distribution Module)
26. Can I install small UPS models behind larger
UPS models?
If you are installing a smaller UPS behind
a larger UPS, you must consider the total
potential power of the smaller UPS as well as
other loads that will be powered by the larger
UPS. For example, if you are plugging a 1500
VA UPS into a 10,000 VA UPS, you must
consider the 1500 VA load of the smaller UPS
rather than just the load that is plugged into it.
In addition, the larger UPS must be at least five
times larger than the smaller UPS. This design
guideline must be followed due to charging
capacity that may be required by the smaller
UPS, any anomalies associated with the building
power, and to avoid overheating or potential over
loading of the larger UPS which may result in
failure of the all UPS models in the string.
27. What does MaxiMoose, the Avaya UPS mascot,
have to do with power protection?
Nothing. We think he is cute and he has been
very popular. If you send in a question to
[email protected], we’ll send you a 3-inch
tall MaxiMoose. Most Europeans think he is a
reindeer.

UPS and can’t plug it into the wall socket or can’t plug in their Avaya equipment into the UPS, you’ve got
a problem. UPSs 1500 VA and below can be plugged into a standard wall socket. Models from 2 kVA to 6
kVA use input plugs that cannot be plugged into a standard wall socket. Avaya 8-20 kVA UPS models are
connected directly into the electrical distribution of the facility. This is called hardwiring and a certified
electrician must install the UPS. The chart below shows the various input plugs and output receptacles
used by Avaya UPS models.
*5-15P can plug into 5-20R
R = Receptacle P = Plug L= Locking
The number after the hyphen indicates the amperage. For example, the L5-30R is a 30A receptacle.

Glossary of Power Terms
Ampere (A or Amp) – The unit of measure for the
“rate of flow” of electricity, analogous to “gallons
per minute.” VA x .7 (power factor) = Watts
Alternating current (AC) – An electric current that
reverses its direction at regularly recurring intervals.
Arc – Sparking that results when undesirable current
flows between two points of differing potential. This
may be due to leakage through the intermediate
insulation or a leakage path due to contamination.
Backup time – The amount of time the battery in a
UPS is designed to support the load.
Blackout – A zero-voltage condition lasting for more
than two cycles.
BTU – British Thermal Unit. Used to measure heat
dissipation. Energy required to raise one pound of
water one degree Fahrenheit. One pound of water at
32 degrees F requires the transfer of 144 BTUs to
freeze into solid ice.
Brownout – A steady state of low voltage, but not
zero voltage.
Common Mode Noise – An undesirable voltage
which appears between the power conductors and
ground.
Crest Factor – Usually refers to current. It is the
mathematical relationship between RMS current
and peak current. A normal resistive load will have
a crest factor of 1.4142, which is the normal
relationship between peak and RMS current. A
typical PC will have a crest factor of 3.
Direct current (DC) – An electric current in which
the flow of electrons is in one direction, such as
supplied by a battery.
Double conversion – A UPS design in which the
primary power path consists of a rectifier and
inverter. Double con-version isolates the output
power from all input anomalies such as low voltage
surges and frequency variations.
Downtime – The time during which a functional
unit cannot be used because of a fault within the
functional unit or within the environment.
Electrical line noise – Radio frequency interference
(RFI), electromagnetic interference (EMI) and other
voltage or frequency disturbances.
Electromagnetic interference (EMI) – Electrical
interference that can cause equipment to work
improperly. EMI can be separated into conducted
EMI (interference conducted through cables out of
the UPS) and radiated EMI (interference conducted
through the air).
Ground – A conducting connection, whether
intentional or accidental, by which an electric
circuit or equipment is connected to the earth, or to
some conducting body of relatively large extent that
serves in place of the earth.
Harmonic – A sinusoidal component of an AC voltage
that is multiple of the fundamental waveform
frequency. Certain harmonic patterns may cause
equipment problems.
Harmonic Distortion – Regularly appearing distortion
of the sine wave whose frequency is a multiple of
the fundamental frequency. Converts the normal
sine wave into a complex waveform.
Hertz (Hz) – A unit of frequency equal to one cycle
per second.
High voltage spike – Rapid voltage peak up to 6,000
volts.
Hot-swappable – The ability to change a module
without taking the critical load off the UPS.
Input voltage range – The voltage range within which
a UPS operates in “normal” mode and does not
require battery power.
Hot-Swappable Batteries

Inverter – UPS assembly that converts internal DC
power to output AC power to run user’s equipment.
When the inverter is supporting 100% of the load at
all times, as with an online UPS, there is no break
from utility power to battery power.
Kilovolt ampere (kVA) – An approximation of available
power in an AC system that does not take the power
factor into account.
Line-interactive – An offline UPS topology in which
the system interacts with the utility line in order to
regulate the power to the load.
Load – The equipment connected to and protected
by a UPS.
Load Segment – A group of output receptacles
on a UPS that can be shut off independently to
preserve battery power for critical devices, started
up in sequence, or rebooted to reset connected
equipment.
Maintenance bypass – An external wiring path
to which the load can be transferred in order to
upgrade or perform service on the UPS without
powering down the load.
Make-Before-Break – Operational sequence of a
switch or relay where the new connection is made
prior to disconnecting the existing connection, also
soft-load-transfer switching.
Noise – (1) A disturbance that affects a signal; it
can distort the information carried by the signal.
(2) Random variations of one or more characteristics
of any entity such as voltage, current or data.
(3) Loosely, any disturbance tending to interfere
with normal operation of a device.
Offline – Any UPS that does not fit the definition of
online. Line-interactive and standby topologies are
offline.
Ohm – The unit of measurement for electrical
resistance or opposition to current flow.
Online – (1) A UPS that provides power to the load
from its inverter 100% of the time, regulating BOTH
voltage and frequency, usually double conversion
topology.
Orderly Shutdown – The sequenced shutdown of
units comprising a computer system to prevent
damage to the system and subsequent corruption or
loss of data.
Plug and play – An electrical device that does not
require extensive setup to operate.
Power factor (PF) – The ratio of real power to
apparent power. Watts divided by VA. Most power
supplies used in communication and computer
equipment have a power factor of .7. (PF = .7)
VA x PF = W
W/PF = VA
Power sag – Low voltage (below nominal 120 volts).
Power surge – High voltage (above nominal
120 volts).
Rackmount – Ability to mount an electrical assembly
into a standardized rack.
Rectifier – UPS component that converts incoming
AC power to DC power for feeding the inverter and
for charging the battery.
Redundancy – Duplication or repetition of elements
in electronic equipment to provide alternative
functional channels in case of failure. The Avaya
9 to 18 kVA UPS features N+X redundancy. Visit
eaton.com/avaya for details.
Relay communication – Communication between
a UPS and a computer through the opening and
closing of solid state relays which are pre-defined to
indicate UPS status.
RS-232 – The standard for serial interfaces
(serial refers to the eight bits of each character
successively sent down one wire) used by most
computers, modems and printers; a 25-pin
physical interface.

Sine wave – A waveform that represents periodic
oscillations of a pure frequency.
Single-phase – Power system with one primary
waveform.
Standby – UPS technology where power is applied
to the load directly from the utility under normal
operation, but switched to the inverter and battery
for emergency support (offline topology).
Three-phase – A power system with three primary
voltage waveforms spaced equally (in time) out of
phase with each other.
Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) – Describes how
much the circuit voltage deviates from a perfect
sine wave. A poor voltage THD is most often
manifested in a “flat topped” waveform that comes
from the inability of a power source to respond to
the demands of highly non-linear loads.
U – A unit of vertical measurement in a rack
enclosure. 1U = 1.75 inches.
Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) – An electrical
system designed to provide instant, transient-free
back up power during power failure or fault. Some
UPSs also filter and/or regulate utility power (line
conditioning).
Volt/voltage (V) – Electrical pressure that pushes
current through a circuit. High voltage in a
computer circuit is represented by 1; low (or zero)
voltage is represented by 0.
VoltAmps (VA) – Voltage x amps.
Volts direct current (Vdc)
Volts alternating current (Vac)
Watts (W) – The rate of doing electrical work.
W x 1.3 = VA.

REPO port REPO is used to shut down the UPS from a distance. This feature can be used for shutting down the load and the UPS by thermal relay, for instance in the event of room overtemperature. When REPO is activated, the UPS shuts down the output and all its power converters immediately. The UPS remains on to alarm the fault.
Communication card Web/SNMP card included for direct control and monitoring in SNMP-based networks, monitoring of UPS status and meters through Web browser interface

Bypass Distribution Module: 1000 and 1500 VA UPS
The Bypass Distribution Modules (BDMs) are designed to enhance the reliability and flexibility of the 1000
and 1500 VA Avaya UPS. BDMs allow you to upgrade or replace the UPS while continuously providing
power to your protected equipment. The BDM also provides surge protection for the critical loads if UPS is
not present and provides surge protection for your laser printer without taxing the UPS. BDMs can be used
in both tower and rack-mount configurations.
Note: In a rack configuration, the BDM does not take up additional rack space and only creates an
extension of the depth of the unit.
