Iowa State Football • 2018 Spring Football Guide

2018 IOWA STATE SPRING FOOTBALL OUTLOOKPREVIEWMatt Campbell implored his team to “Trust The Process” when he took over as head football coach prior to the 2016 season.

His players bought into the “Process” and it paid major dividends in 2017, as the Cyclones finished the season at 8-5, defeated a school-record three ranked teams, appeared in the AP Top-25 for the first time since 2005 and won the fourth bowl game in school history with a 21-20 victory over Mem-phis in the Liberty Bowl.

How the Cyclones respond to success is the next question, and the founda-tion for a repeat performance begins this spring. ISU must replace impor-tant players who were key in helping turn the fortunes around in guys like two-time All-Big 12 receiver Allen Lazard and All-American linebacker Joel Lanning.

The cupboard isn’t bare, however. ISU returns nine players on offense who have seven or more career starts, including All-American running back Da-vid Montgomery, who rushed for 1,146 yards in 2017.

On defense, ISU returns six starters, but all six earned some sort of All-Big 12 recognition in 2017, including three-time All-Big 12 cornerback Brian Peavy.

The program instituted the slogan “Win In The Dark” for 2018. The concept is simple. Games are won or lost in the offseason when nobody is watch-ing. It’s time to go to work.

CAMPBELL ON SPRING FOOTBALL“I think what is really unique about college football is that every year if your belief doesn’t start with going back to the basics and creating fundamentals and details, then at the end of the year you probably didn’t have success. Last year we were able to do that in the spring and we were able to have success. If you don’t believe that, then I think you’re really in the wrong. Even though it’s nice to have some core group of guys coming back, you still have to begin with fundamentals and details to really hone those skills. We won’t be as worried about scheme through these next 15 practices, because focusing on the fundamentals and details will be really critical for our long term success.”

QUARTERBACKSSYNOPSISIowa State posted its most efficient and productive passing season in school history in 2017 despite using three different starting quarterbacks.

The Cyclones broke the school record for passing yards per game (272.9), were one shy from tying the season mark in touchdown passes (27) and shattered the school-record completion percentage mark (62.9 pct.).

The good news is that ISU returns two players who earned at least one start in 2017, including Kyle Kempt (6-5, 210, Sr.#, Massillon, Ohio), who was granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA in February.

Kempt instantly gives the Cyclones experience at the QB position for spring drills and the 2018 season.

Kempt’s incredible rise during the 2017 season has been well-documented. A seldom-used walk-on received his first career start at No. 3 Oklahoma on Oct. 7. He proceeded to lead the Cyclones to one of their biggest wins in school history (38-31) by throwing for 343 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-24 attempts.

The honorable mention All-Big 12 selection steered the ship in ISU’s suc-cessful 8-5 campaign, going 5-3 as a starter, including a 3-1 mark vs. ranked teams. Kempt ended the year breaking the school’s single-season comple-tion mark (66.3) by completing 161-of-243 passes for 1,787 yards (eight games). He tossed 15 touchdowns to just three interceptions, tying for fifth on ISU’s season list for touchdown passes.

Zeb Noland (6-2, 222, So.#, Watkinsville, Ga.) was Kempt’s backup last season as a redshirt freshman and is eager to show improvement in 2018.

Noland filled in admirably in a pair of games in 2017 when Kempt was sidelined with an injury. He entered the Oklahoma State late in the sec-ond quarter and almost led the Cyclones to an upset over the 12th-ranked team in the nation (49-42). He threw for 263 yards vs. the Cowboys, the fifth-best single-game total by an ISU rookie in school history.

He earned his first career start the following week at Baylor, directing the Cyclones to a 23-13 victory. He was 14-of-28 for 180 yards and two touch-downs in the win over the Bears. Noland finished the season completing 54.5 percent of his passes (36-66) for 533 yards and two touchdowns.

Devon Moore (6-4, 225, Fr.#, Waterloo, Iowa) suffered a knee injury prior to the 2017 campaign. He sat out last year as a redshirt and will get his first chance at legitimite reps in practice.

Re-al Mitchell (6-0, 190, Fr., Eastvale, Calif.) will add depth at QB in the spring as a mid-year enrollee. Mitchell was invited to the Elite 11 QB Camp in 2017 after leading his high school to the state title in 2016 where he passed for 2,932 yards (198-294) and ran for 1,058 yards.

CAMPBELL ON THE QUARTERBACKS“It’s nice going into the first spring practice having four quarterbacks healthy and ready to. Our first two years we basically only had two quar-terbacks who could participate in spring practice. Now you got four guys and we have competition. All four guys bring something to the table. Obvi-ously, Kyle Kempt is the veteran and has the leadership. A question now is, how can he grow from the experience he gained last year? Zeb Noland for the first time is healthy for the spring. He has two years of experience and has had a great winter for us. We also have Devon Moore healthy and ready to go and we get to see what Re-al Mitchell brings to the table. I’m really excited because we got four guys that are competing and four guys that have a lot of excitement around them. I can’t wait to see what they can do and where they’re at right in our program.”

TIGHT ENDSSYNOPSISThe tight end position will be well-stocked in 2018 with the potential of being one of ISU’s stronger units.

The Cyclones return virtually every player who contributed at tight end and the F position in 2018, and will add more depth with a player coming out of a redshirt.

Chase Allen (6-7, 230, So.#, Nixa, Mo.) is back after a freshman season where he started nine games. Allen’s length, outstanding hands and im-proved blocking earned him second-team all-Big 12 recognition a year ago.

Allen caught four passes for 39 yards last year and will be counted on to be the leader in the group.

The Cyclones also return Dylan Soehner (6-7, 271, So.#, Prairie Grove, Ark.), who started one game, was a key reserve and standout on special teams protection units.

A player to keep an eye on is Charlie Kolar (6-6, 238, Fr.#, Norman, Okla.), who sat out last season as a redshirt. Kolar has the potential to be a big-time playmaker. He was a first-team all-state selection as a senior in 2016 after recording 66 receptions for 1,240 yards and 12 touchdowns.

An unsung hero for the Cyclones the last two seasons was senior Sam Seonbuchner (6-3, 232, Sr.#, Oconomowoc, Wis.). Seonbuchner is ISU’s go-to player (F position) when the Cyclones align in a power formation in short-yardage situations.

Seonbuchner’s blocking has been influential in opening up lanes in the run-ning game and he also caught his first career pass a year ago.

Senior Cole Anderson (6-4, 264, Sr.#, League City, Texas) will also add depth at the F position.

Iowa State Football • 2018 Spring Football Guide

2018 IOWA STATE SPRING FOOTBALL OUTLOOKCAMPBELL ON THE TIGHT ENDS“I think very similar to the quarterbacks and running backs, there is depth at tight end. We have guys who are fighting for playing time. We have Chase Allen and Sam Seonbuchner, who both got the bulk of the reps and who you saw a ton of improvement as the year went on. Another guy that really came on toward the end of the season was Dylan Soehner, who really is just starting to peak. We think he’s got all the tools and abilities to become a great player. Charlie Kolar is a guy that if you were to have asked after the first two weeks of fall camp a year ago, ‘Who’s a guy who has a chance to be a difference maker in your program?’ Charlie would be that guy. Again, it is great having depth and multiple guys fighting for playing time. What can those guys give our offense? How does this allow us to be different then maybe we’ve been in the past? I think those are questions we want to answer this spring.”

RUNNING BACKSSYNOPSISNate Scheelhaase was hired as Iowa State’s new running backs coach in January and he possibly inherited one of the most talented position rooms on the team.

Iowa State returns every running back who contributed last season, includ-ing two players who have earned All-Big 12 recognition throughout their careers in David Montgomery (5-11, 219, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Mike Warren (6-0, 211, Sr.#, Lawton, Okla.).

Montgomery emerged as not only one of the best backs in the Big 12, but as one of the toughest rushers nationally in 2017. The powerful back was a first-team All-American by Pro Football Focus (PFF) and a first-team all-Big 12 choice by the league’s coaches after churning out 1,146 yards on the ground. He ranked third in the league in rushing (88.2 ypg).

Montgomery had six 100-yard outings and forced an incredible 109 missed tackles according to PFF. He also proved to be a threat as a receiver, catch-ing 36 passes for 296 yards, the second-most receptions by an ISU running back in school history.

Warren was a back-up to Montgomery in the first half of the season, rush-ing for 105 yards. The 2015 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, who led all FBS rookies in rushing three years ago (1,339), became just the 14th player in ISU history to rush for over 2,000 yards in career (2,003).

Another added boost to the backfield is the return of Kene Nwangwu (6-1, 202, So.#, Frisco, Texas) and Sheldon Croney Jr. (5-11, 201, Jr.#, Bakers-field, Calif.).

Nwangwu was a Freshman All-American in 2016 as a kickoff returner when he averaged 26.4 yards per return to rank second in the Big 12 and 15th nationally. Nwangwu, who also rushed for 133 yards as a true freshman in 2016, is considered the fastest player on the team. He was forced to take a medical redshirt in 2017 when he tore his Achilles tendon prior to spring drills.

Healthy and at full strength, the ISU coaches are eager to have Nwangwu back in the mix for 2018.

Croney Jr. was Montgomery’s backup in the latter half of the 2017 cam-paign and did an excellent job. He ended the season second on the team in rushing with 159 yards and led the team in rushing vs. Kansas State with a career-high 63 rushing yards.

Johnnie Lang (5-8, 189, Fr.#, Palmetto, Fla.) will also provide depth in the backfield. He played briefly at the beginning of the season before injuries shut him down for the rest of the year.

CAMPBELL ON THE RUNNING BACKS“I think David Montgomery is continuing to show great leadership ability. His next step is bringing that consistency every day. This group will be really fun to watch because these guys bring multiple different aspects that we literally haven’t had since we’ve been here. You’ve got Kene Nwangwu, who brings incredible speed to the table. Johnnie Lang has a ton of versa-

tility. I think that Mike Warren’s work ethic has really been evident over the last year and a half in our program. You just can’t say enough about him. Sheldon Croney is another guy who can help us. I think we’re all really excited about that group and I think it allow us to do some things we haven’t done before.”

WIDE RECEIVERSSYNOPSISIowa State will have to see what life is like in the post-Allen Lazard era. Lazard established himself as the greatest receiver in school history, earning first-team all-Big 12 accolades twice and breaking nearly every school receiving mark.

Lazard, who is now prepping for a career in the NFL, graduated along with other receiving standouts Trever Ryen and Marchie Murdock.

Despite the attrition, there are plenty of weapons returning at receiver for the Cyclones in 2018.

The biggest contributor back is Hakeem Butler (6-6, 219, Jr.#, Baltimore, Md.), who earned honorable mention all-Big 12 accolades in 2017.

Butler proved to be ISU’s big-play threat last year, recording four of the top six longest plays of the season (74, 67, 57, 52). He was second on the team in receiving yards (697) and touchdown catches (7), tying for ninth on ISU’s season list for touchdown grabs.

Butler, who had a pair of 100-yard receiving games, ranked 47th nation-ally in yards per reception (17.0) in 2017.

Two other experienced players - Deshaunte Jones (5-10, 179, Jr., Cincin-nati, Ohio) and Matthew Eaton (6-4, 209, Sr.#, Norfolk, Va.) - are also back in the mix.

Jones, who led all Big 12 rookies in receiving yards (563) in 2016, had 28 catches for 273 yards in 2017. With the graduation of Ryen, Jones will be the Cyclones’ primary target in the slot (M position).

Eaton is another tall, rangy target who had a promising start in his first season as a Cyclone in 2017. Eaton tallied 21 catches for 208 yards and ranked fourth on the team in touchdown receptions with four.

Carson Epps (6-1, 211, Sr., Jenks, Okla.) is also back for his senior sea-son. Epps played mostly on special teams in 2017, but he had 17 recep-tions for 213 yards in 2016.

Four other Cyclones who will look to fit into the rotation in 2018 are Jalen Martin (6-3, 208, So.#, Detroit, Mich.), Landen Akers (6-0, 188, So.#, Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Tarique Milton (5-11, 165, Fr.#, Bradenton, Fla.) and Josh Johnson (5-11, 171, Fr.#, Little Rock, Ark.).

Martin, who was an all-stater in both football and basketball in high school, is an excellent athlete with a bright future. Martin caught two passes for 22 yards in his redshirt freshman season.

Akers was ISU’s kickoff returner in 2017, averaging 20.9 yards per return. He also recorded a 34-yard pass in his only reception of the season.

Milton sat out 2017 as a redshirt and will look to be a backup to Jones in the slot. Milton had 64 receptions for 1,087 yards to earn all-state honors in Florida as a senior.

Johnson is another redshirt who is eager to see where he fits into the re-ceiver rotation. Johnson was a four-star recruit coming out of high school where he was an all-stater in Arkansas.

CAMPBELL ON THE WIDE RECEIVERS“What’s exciting for this group is that we certainly have a lot of skill re-turning and we are anxious to find out who is the next man up. Hakeem Butler really flashed his skills and showed us that he’s got the ability. Now, can he be the consistent guy? Can he be the guy that gets the guy every time at his position? I think it’s a really exciting time for Hakeem

Iowa State Football • 2018 Spring Football Guide

2018 IOWA STATE SPRING FOOTBALL OUTLOOKand his career. Matt Eaton is a guy that showed up a bunch last year. For the first time he is as healthy as I’ve ever seen him and he’s got a chance to really explode onto the scene. He has shown big play potential. Obviously, we’ve seen Deshaunte Jones play really well in our offense. You feel good about him. The best part of this spring is showcasing the guys that maybe nobody is talking about yet. Tarique Milton is a name that has consistently shown up in our offseason workouts. He can be a guy that can make a difference. Jalen Martin is another guy that has shown talent and fits the mold of the big, physical receivers that we’ve certainly had. Josh Johnson, Landen Akers and Carson Epps will battle for playing time this spring. There’s a lot of competition. Until the lights come on and those guys can show what they can do with great consistency, we won’t know if there’s great depth there. But there’s a lot of talent that’s competing right now.”

OFFENSIVE LINESYNOPSISFor the first time since 2015, Iowa State will return over half of its starters on the offensive line. The Cyclones must replace two starters (Jake Cam-pos, Robby Garcia), but four players who started at least six games in 2017 are back to give ISU experience in the trenches.

With the majority of the starters as underclassmen in 2017, the offensive line was a work in progress. However, there was no denying the success of the front five in allowing the Cyclones to set numerous records in the passing department. The Cyclones ranked 30th nationally in passing yards (272.9), breaking the season school record, and allowed just 19 sacks to rank second in the Big 12 and 26th nationally.

The biggest returnee is Julian Good-Jones (6-5, 293, Jr.#, Cedar Rapids, Iowa), who currently owns ISU’s longest active starting streak at 24 games.

Good-Jones moved to center in 2017, starting all 13 games while earning honorable mention all-Big 12 accolades. The 2017 Rimington Award nomi-nee will anchor the line in 2018.

One of ISU’s biggest pickups last season was signing Josh Knipfel (6-5, 317, Jr., Hampton, Iowa) in May right before summer workouts. Knipfel was an all-conference performer in his only season at JC power Iowa Western (2016), and as a qualifier, decided to transfer to a Division I school.

The lifelong Cyclone fan picked Iowa State and immediately found his way into the lineup, starting all 13 games at right guard. Campbell is excited to see Knipfel continue to mature at the position in 2018.

Both Bryce Meeker (6-6, 314, Jr.#, Cedar Rapids) and Sean Foster (6-8, 304, So.#, Mundelein, Ill.) split starts at right tackle in 2017. Meeker started seven games and Foster started six.

Meeker started the first seven games of 2017 before suffering an injury that sidelined him late in the year. He was able to return and provide depth on the line in the Liberty Bowl.

Look for Meeker to remain at the right tackle spot in 2018.

Foster became the starter at right tackle when Meeker went down and will likely move to left tackle in 2018.

One spot up for grabs is left guard. Look for senior Oge Udeogu (6-3, 317, Sr.#, Imo, Nigeria) and redshirt freshman Robert Hudson (6-6, 350, Fr.#, Walled Lake, Mich.) to battle for the position this spring.

Udeogu has been plagued by injuries in his two years in Ames. He red-shirted in 2016 and was sidelined with an elbow injury last season.

Hudson is a promising talent who has a chance be special. He’s already got the size and learned the ropes while redshirting in 2017. In his only year playing on the offensive line in high school, he was named first-team all-state as a senior.

Will Windham (6-3, 307, Sr.#, Schertz, Texas) has been the backup center for the last two seasons and has experience. Windham will be joined by redshirt freshman Colin Newell (6-4, 282, Fr.#, Ames, Iowa) in second-

team reps at center. Newell was a first-team all-state selection as a local product out of Ames in 2016.

Other players jockeying for back-up spots at various positions on the line are: Alex Kleinow (6-6, 279, Fr.#, North Liberty, Iowa), Josh Mueller (6-6, 309, So.#, Mequon, Wis.) and Jacob Bolton (6-5, 325, Fr.#, Roswell, Ga.).

Bolton and Kleinow are tackles and Mueller is penciled in as a guard.

CAMPBELL ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE“I think for the first time, we actually look like an offensive line going into a football season. The reality of that is it’s the first time since we’ve been here that we actually have multiple starters coming back, which is huge. Offensive line is a learned skill. It’s a learned trait. It’s not something any-body grows up doing. The more experience and more reps you get, the better the opportunity to be in sync and have a chance to be really good. I’m excited for Bryce Meeker and I’m excited for Julian Good-Jones, and certainly Josh Knipfel. Those guys got great reps last year. Sean Foster got great reps, too. Their bodies are changing and I think that as their bodies change, and combine that with good reps, their confidence grows. We are really excited to see guys like Robert Hudson, Jacob Bolton and Colin Newell step forward. These guys have really shown consistency and high-end talent. Josh Mueller is another guy in the mix. These guys are really doing some good things for us. Oge Udeogu is coming off an injury and we are anxious to see where he is at. Jeff Nogaj, Trevor Downing, who enrolled early, Alex Kleinow and Noah Juergensen, these guys all have big bodies. They look like offensive line-men. They’re gaining weight and they’re developing in our strength pro-gram. That’s what really good O-lines look like. They develop over time, and now going into our third year, I think you’re going to see at least we look like what O-lines are supposed to look like. That is really exciting.”

DEFENSIVE LINESYNOPSISIowa State ranked 26th nationally in scoring defense (20.9) and was third in the Big 12 in total defense (366.2) in 2017. The defensive line should receive credit for those outstanding numbers.

The Cyclones, who were versatile, experimenting with both 4-man and 3-man fronts during the year, graduated two players in all-Big 12 end J.D. Waggoner and interior lineman Vernell Trent.

Despite the losses, ISU does return two honorable mention all-Big 12 performers in defensive end JaQuan Bailey (6-2, 260, Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and nose guard Ray Lima (6-3, 306, Jr.#, Los Angeles, Calif.)

Bailey has started 20 games in his first two seasons as a Cyclone and made considerable strides in his sophomore campaign a year ago. He had 34 tackles, 11.0 TFL, two forced fumbles and led the team in sacks (7.0), the fourth-best season total in school history.

Bailey already has 10.5 sacks in his career and is on pace to rank as one of the best ends in the history of the program.

Lima was perhaps the biggest addition for the Cyclones a year ago, shar-ing the Dury Moss Award as the team’s top newcomer. His stats weren’t gaudy (25 tackles, 4.5 TFL), but his ability to take on double teams, stop the run and plug holes allowed the linebackers and secondary to make plays.

His presence in the middle shouldn’t be underscored and he has the ca-pability of being one of the best interior defenders in the Big 12.

Jamahl Johnson (6-0, 314, Jr., Savage, Minn.), Kamilo Tongamoa (6-5, 290, Sr.#, Van Nuys, Calif.), Tucker Robertson (6-3, 284, Fr.#, Simi Valley, Calif.) and Joshua Bailey (6-2, 288, So.#, Jacksonville, Fla.) are candi-dates to see time in the interior.

Johnson has been a valuable reserve in his first two seasons, playing in nine games in his career.

Iowa State Football • 2018 Spring Football Guide

2018 IOWA STATE SPRING FOOTBALL OUTLOOKTongamoa, who was considered one of the top junior college players in the class of 2017, fell behind the eight ball after arriving on campus in late August, missing out on summer workouts and fall camp.

With a year under his belt, the staff is hoping Tongamoa can make contribu-tions in 2018.

Robertson sat out last season as a redshirt and is ready for action. He was a highly-touted recruit out of California in high school.

Ben Latusek (6-3, 244, Fr.#, Dike, Iowa), a walk-on, who has continued to add weight on his frame, will get a chance to work with the interior linemen this spring. An all-stater in high school, Latusek led his team in TFL (23.0) and sacks (12.0) as a senior.

A strong choice to fill in at one of the starting ends is Enyi Uwazurike (6-6, 288, So.#, Detroit, Mich.). Uwazurike was solid as a reserve in his rookie season, playing in all 13 games and recording 16 tackles and 4.0 TFL.

Spencer Benton (6-2, 247, Sr.#, Van Meter, Iowa), Carson Lensing (6-4, 255, So.#, Fort Atkinson, Iowa), Matt Leo (6-7, 276, Jr.#, Adelaide, Australia), Dan Sichterman (6-3, 237, Fr.#, Cincinnati, Ohio) and Angel Dominguez (6-4, 274, Fr.#, Kansas City, Kan.) will battle for snaps on the end.

CAMPBELL ON THE DEFENSIVE LINE“We have competition on the defensive line. How many snaps are you go-ing to play in a game? How much do you want to play in a game? The reality of it is, there’s a lot of competition right now for playing time. You look at the Leo spot, and you got JaQuan Bailey, Spencer Benton and Carson Lensing, all three guys who have played and have the ability to make a difference in a game. Who’s going to play meaningful reps is all based on consistency and the work ethic that they have. The tackle spot you have Kamilo Tongamoa, and then behind him, we are looking at guys like Tucker Robertson, Joshua Bailey and Angel Dominguez. Those are all guys that have high-end ability and we are excited about. At the nose, you’ve got Ray Lima and Jamahl Johnson. We are also excited about a young guy who walked on our team, Ben Latusek, who’s really flashed and showed some real positives for us. At the other end spot, we have Enyi Uwazurike, Matt Leo and Dan Sichterman, all guys that are really showing up in a positive way for us. I think we’re really excited about what that group looks like and feels like. Again, it’s all about development. I think that group has continued to grow. I’m excited to see the guys who most people haven’t really heard of try to earn some playing time and push these guys to meaningful reps in the fall. I think it’s a great, competitive group right now.”

LINEBACKERSSYNOPSISWhat was considered to be a weakness in 2017 turned out to be the total opposite. The Cyclone linebacking crew was outstanding, producing three All-Big 12 players, including Joel Lanning, who also earned All-America hon-ors in his first season at the position.

Lanning was the heart and soul of the team and his leadership and pres-ence will definitely be missed.

However, the unit is in solid hands with the return of honorable mention all-Big 12 players Willie Harvey (6-0, 222, Sr.#, Hastings, Fla.) and Marcel Spears Jr. (6-1, 215, Jr.#, Olathe, Kan.).

The duo combined for 183 tackles, 20.0 TFL, 5.0 sacks and three intercep-tions last season and will provide valuable experience heading into the spring.

Harvey has 29 starts in his career and has been a staple in the lineup since 2015. The two-time honorable mention all-league choice has 213 tackles, 9.0 sacks and is ISU’s active career leader in TFL with 22.0.

The senior was second on the team in TFL (11.5), had 4.0 sacks and started 12 games at Sam linebacker in 2017.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the team in 2017 was the emergence of Spears at Will linebacker. Spears, who played primarily on special teams in 2016, came out of nowhere to rank second on the team in tackles (107) and record 8.5 TFL in 13 starts.

Spears had two fourth-quarter interceptions to seal victories, including a pick-six at Texas Tech. Twice Spears was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week in 2017 and was the Defensive MVP of the Liberty Bowl after tallying 11 tackles and 2.5 TFL in the victory over Memphis.

Finding a replacement for Lanning at Mike linebacker will be paramount in the spring. The two likely candidates are Tymar Sutton (5-10, 222, So.#, McKeesport, Pa.) and O’Rien Vance (6-1, 235, Fr.#, Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

Sutton played on special teams and had snaps as a reserve in 2017, regis-tering four tackles in 11 games.

Vance, who redshirted last year, was one of the top recruits in Iowa in the class of 2017. He was a two-time Des Moines Register Elite All-State pick with 95 tackles, 14.0 TFL and 7.0 sacks as a senior.

Backups at linebacker will be filled by Reggan Northrup (6-1, 208, Sr.#, Jacksonville, Fla.), Jake Hummel (6-1, 223, So., Des Moines, Iowa) and Bobby McMillen (6-2, 230, Jr.#, Naperville, Ill.).

Northrup played primarily on special teams in 2017, but he has experience. Northrup has seven starts and 88 tackles in his career.

Hummel has tremendous upside. He was the only true freshman to play in over half of the games in 2017, cementing a role as a leader on special teams. He will get his crack at earning quality snaps from scrimmage in the spring.

McMillen has been a special teams star and reserve in his first two sea-sons in Ames. He registered nine tackles while playing in all 13 games in 2017.

CAMPBELL ON THE LINEBACKERS“There is a lot of competition at linebacker. Marcel Spears and Willie Harvey give you anchors. Spears, like David Montgomery on offense, provides you the heartbeat of your football team. You’ve got a guy like Willie who’s played a lot of reps for you. We also have some of these young guys like Jake Hummel, Tymar Sutton, O’Rien Vance, Cordar-rius Bailey, and then a veteran that I think people would be mistaken not to talk about in Reggan Northrup. Reggan is a senior who has a lot of experience. He’s at the best weight he’s ever been at almost 210 right now. He’s a guy that can run, is physical, and is healthy for the first time in his career since we’ve been here. I think there’s a lot of competition right now. You’ve got Bobby McMillen as an older guy, and you’ve got Rory Walling, a walk-on who has really flashed and shown impressive things. There is a lot of competition for playing time amongst that group and I think we are the most athletic we’ve certainly been since we’ve been here. That is really exciting.”

DEFENSIVE BACKSSYNOPSISIowa State lost both of its starting safeties (Kamari Cotton-Moya and Reggie Wilkerson) but is blessed to have two experienced all-Big 12 cor-nerbacks returning in Brian Peavy (5-9, 190, Sr.#, Houston, Texas) and D’Andre Payne (5-10, 180, Sr.#, Washington, D.C.).

Peavy, a three-year starter, and Payne, a two-year starter, have a com-bined 54 career starts.

Peavy, regardless of position, is one of ISU’s best returning players in 2018, earning All-Big 12 accolades for the third season in a row as a sec-ond-team selection from the league’s coaches in 2017.

Peavy was second on the team in tackles (88), led the team in takeaways (2 INT, 2 FR) and was ninth in the Big 12 in passes defended (11). He is ISU’s active career leader in tackles (232), interceptions (5) and starts (34).

After briefly flirting with leaving for the NFL, Peavy decided to stick in Ames for one more season and will be one of the best corners in the Big 12 in 2018.

Payne has started 20 games the last two seasons, including all 12 games he played in at cornerback a year ago. He played the Star/Nickel position

Iowa State Football • 2018 Spring Football Guide

2018 IOWA STATE SPRING FOOTBALL OUTLOOKin 2016 before switching to corner in 2017 where he recorded 48 tackles and 6.0 TFL.

Three players who will backup Peavy and Payne at corner will be De’Monte Ruth (5-10, 170, Sr.#, Dallas, Texas), Richard Bowens (6-0, 177, Fr.#, De-troit, Mich.) and Arnold Azunna (6-0, 194, So.#, Grand Prairie, Texas).

Ruth, who earned one start in 2017, was extremely valuable as a reserve for the Cyclones, registering 29 tackles while playing in all 13 games.

Bowens played in two games as a true freshman before injuries shut down his season.

Azunna also struggled with injuries in 2017. He played in just two games, but saw significant snaps in the Liberty Bowl victory.

A huge mid-year signee for the Cyclones is Greg Eisworth (6-0, 195, So.#, Grand Prairie, Texas), who will compete for the free safety spot with Ja-tairis Grant (6-0, 191, So.#, Akron, Ohio).

Eisworth was considered one of the top junior college players in the class of 2018. He played one year at Trinity Valley CC after transferring from Mis-sissippi where he was a four-star recruit out of high school.

Grant played in all 13 games last season, mostly on special teams. He did see action as a reserve safety, accumulating 14 tackles.

Strong safety will be occupied by Lawrence White (6-0, 178, So.#, Bakers-field, Calif.) and Keontae Jones (6-0, 163, Fr.#, Cincinnati, Ohio).

White’s number was called numerous times to fill in at safety in his redshirt freshman season in 2017. He posted 16 tackles and had a career-high six stops in his first career start in the Liberty Bowl victory over Memphis.

Jones was one of ISU’s top recruits in the class of 2017 where he was ranked as one of the top-50 safeties nationally by multiple outlets. He played in two games as a true freshman before injuries sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Braxton Lewis (5-11, 184, Jr.#, Overland Park, Kan.) is another player look-ing for snaps at safety and the Star position. Lewis, who has two starts in his career, tallied 14 tackles in 2017, including a four-tackle game vs. Texas Tech and an interception vs. Akron.

Datrone Young (5-9, 161, Fr.#, Delray Beach, Fla.) is another option at safe-ty for the Cyclones. Young sat out as a redshirt last season.

CAMPBELL ON THE DEFENSIVE BACKS“I almost feel that we feel we have three starters coming back at corner-back when you put De’Monte Ruth in there. He has started games for us and had success. I think Brian Peavy has been a guy that when you needed him to be his best, he’s been there for you. Obviously, the growth that D’Andre Payne made year ago from moving from nickel to corner re-ally helped us. Ruth might be the highlight of our program in terms of a guy who maybe wasn’t doing it right when we first got here. As a senior he is now thriving in our football program. We’re really excited about Arnold Azunna. He played almost 25 snaps in the Liberty Bowl and some would say was the difference in the game for us at the dime position. He’s now fighting for playing time. Datrone Young is a redshirt freshman who prob-ably would have played if he’d not been hurt a year ago. He’s now healthy and really impressive. Richard Bowens has a chance, too. Once again, competition. You’re talking six corners that we all think can play with a lot of veteran guys who have played in the system. At safety, Lawrence White starts in the bowl game and played meaningful reps. He really played great in the bowl game. Jatairis Grant played on all our special teams and got meaningful reps. And then you bring in a guy like Greg Eisworth, who has great ability. He played a whole year as a defensive back for his junior col-lege and he knows what big-time football is. He played at Ole Miss and is a guy that’s coming in on a mission, and that is really exciting. Braxton Lewis is a guy that played critical and meaningful reps for us last year. And then surrounding that group are young guys like O.J. Tucker and Keontae Jones. Both have shown they have talent and we are excited about what their full potential looks like as well.”

SPECIALISTSSYNOPSISReplacing Colin Downing (P) and Garrett Owens (PK) will be a high prior-ity for Campbell and his staff this spring.

Downing was the Cyclones’ punter the last four seasons, ending his career with the eighth-best punting average (40.4) in school history.

Owens was a graduate transfer who earned honorable mention all-Big 12 honors in his only season as a Cyclone in 2017. His 17 field goals made tied for third in school history and his season field goal percent-age (77.3 pct.) ranked fifth on the Cyclone season record list.

Campbell looked ahead to the future by adding two scholarship special-ists at mid-year to compete for both positions in the spring in punter Corey Dunn (6-1, 200, So.#, Numurkah, Australia) and placekicker Brayden Narveson (6-1, 190, Fr., Scottsdale, Ariz.).

Dunn will have three years as a Cyclone after redshirting at City College of San Francisco last year. He averaged 40.1 yards per punt in 2016 and was considered the top junior college punter in the class of 2018 by 247Sports.

Narveson is an early enrollee who won the Luis Zendajas Award as Ari-zona’s top prep kicker in 2017. He made 10-of-15 field goal attempts and connected on a 58-yarder in his final season.

Chris Francis (6-0, 186, Sr.#, Dubuque, Iowa) is back for his senior sea-son and will provide competition at placekicker. Francis has been the Cyclones’ main kickoff man the last three seasons. He had 38 touch-backs in 2017.

Joe Rivera (6-2, 188, So.#, Grinnell, Iowa) will likely backup Dunn at punter and will take a shot at holder along with Dunn.

Iowa State is in outstanding shape with its two long snappers. Both Steve Wirtel (6-4, 214, Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) and Quinn Sonntag (6-0, 221, Jr.#, Des Moines, Iowa) return for their third season of long-snapping service.

Wirtel handles the long snaps for punts and Sonntag is the long-snapper on field goals and PATs.

CAMPBELL ON THE SPECIAL TEAMS“The best thing for us is number one- some of the guys we brought into our kicking situation are already here with us, so you’re going to get meaningful reps. With Brayden Narveson, being a young guy, we are not trying to force-feed him. We need to allow him to get comfortable and having the spring to do that is huge. I think what everybody must know is that Steve Wirtel is the rock and the foundation there. To have that consistency and that elite of a player at that position (long snapper) allows the other guys to really just settle in and do their job, which is really huge. Quinn Sonntag has also done a great job (long snapper) on field goals the last two years. Corey Dunn and Joe Rivera will get their chance at punter, along with Chris Francis at kicker. There is some good competition and guys we have faith in. Special teams will be a big area where we will need to continue to develop those guys, and I think we will. Coach (Joe) Houston, with keeping him on staff, I think that’s huge for us. Our job now is to find out who our punter and our kickers will be going into the fall.”

HEAD COACH MATT CAMPBELL

Matt Campbell, who has an amazing championship pedigree as both a player and coach, was named head football coach at Iowa State University on Nov. 29, 2015.

Campbell initiated his rebuilding plan and laid the foundation of future success in his first season as the head man at Iowa State in 2016.

He implored his team to “Trust The Process,” and in year two of the Campbell era, it paid major dividends.

Campbell’s 2017 Cyclone squad caught the nation’s attention with their drastic improvement, placing Iowa State football into the national rankings and the college football spotlight.

At Iowa State

The 2017 Iowa State football season will go down as one of its best in recent history thanks to Campbell’s coaching efforts.

Picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 Conference, the Cyclones capped off their outstanding 2017 campaign with a victory in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl over Memphis, just the fourth bowl win in the history of the program.

Iowa State surged into AP Top-25 poll for the first time since 2005 thanks to a perfect 4-0 mark in the month of October where it defeated two top-5 teams (Oklahoma, TCU).

Prior to the season, Iowa State was 1-56-2 all-time vs. teams ranked in the top-5 of the AP poll, tripling its all-time career total.

The victory over Oklahoma (38-31) in Norman was Iowa State’s first-ever win over a top-5 opponent on the road and one of the school’s signature triumphs. Iowa State followed up the OU win with a 14-7 victory over No. 4 TCU three weeks later, helping the Cyclones garner their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Iowa State finished the 2017 season with an 8-5 overall record and an upper-half finish in the Big 12 at 5-4, matching the school record for conference wins in a season and tallying the second-most overall victories in school history.

Three of ISU’s wins were against ranked opponents (Oklahoma, TCU, Memphis) and five were on the road, breaking or equaling school marks in both categories.

Campbell perfected a mix of an opportunistic offense and a stingy defense for its success in 2017. ISU scored over 40 points five times during the season, tying the school record for 40-point games in a season, and set a school record in passing offense, averaging 272.9 yards per game.

Defensively, the Cyclones posted historic numbers, ranking in the top-30 nationally in scoring defense (26th, 20.9) and turnover margin (16th, +10). Iowa State was second in the Big 12 (league games only) in scoring defense (18.9) and total defense (357.2), holding nine of 10 conference opponents to at least 10 points below their season average.

The Cyclone defense ranked 16th nationally in TFL, setting a new season standard with 97 stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Campbell’s recipe for success has always been about attention to details, and his 2017 team was the epitome of that. ISU ranked in the top-15 nationally in fewest fumbles lost (1st, 1), fewest turnovers (2nd, 10) and fewest penalties (14th, 4.38).

The Cyclones broke school marks in fewest turnovers and fewest fumbles lost in a season, going nearly the entire year before losing their first fumble, tying the NCAA FBS all-time record along the way.

Campbell was lauded for his efforts in 2017, earning Big 12 Coach of the Year honors. He was also the AFCA Region 4 Coach of the Year.

Campbell’s work with the Cyclones in his inaugural season proved he was the right man for the job.

Inheriting a program with depleted numbers on both sides of the ball, the Cyclones displayed gradual improvement throughout the season, as ISU compiled a 3-9 overall mark and a 2-7 record in Big 12 play.

The Iowa State offense thrived under Campbell’s leadership in 2016, posting impressive

totals which rank high historically. The Cyclones recorded the fourth-best offense in school history in regards to yardage, averaging 421.6 yards per game.

Iowa State’s offense was balanced and efficient, boasting a 1,000-yard receiver in All-Big 12 performer Allen Lazard and a rushing attack which featured three players with 500+ yards on the ground, a first in school history.

In his two years at Iowa State, Campbell has mentored five players who have earned First-Team All-Big 12 accolades, including Joel Lanning, who was a First-Team All-American linebacker by the FWAA in his only season playing the position.

Lazard ended his illustrious career as ISU’s career leader in receptions (241), receiving yards (3,360) and 100-yard receiving games (12). He is one of only two Cyclone offensive players in school history to earn First-Team All-Big 12 honors multiple times.

At Toledo

Campbell compiled a 35-15 record in four-plus seasons as the head coach at Toledo and led the Rockets to three nine-win seasons. He coached UT in three bowls and his 2015 Rocket team played in the Boca Raton Bowl after being hired at Iowa State. Campbell’s winning percentage (.700) is third-best in school history, trailing only Nick Saban (.818, 1990) and Bill Orwig (.762, 1946-47).

He was named the UT head coach in December 2011 (when Tim Beckman left), becoming the youngest head coach in the FBS by three years. Only 16 days after his promotion from offensive coordinator to head coach, Campbell led the Rockets to a 42-41 win over Air Force in the Military Bowl. Interestingly, Campbell coached the bowl game from his accustomed spot in the press box to avoid a game-day distraction. Former Cyclone assistant coach Louis Ayeni handled coaching duties on the sidelines at the bowl game.

The Military Bowl win was a springboard to many more achievements at Toledo.

Campbell’s first full season as head coach (2012) included an eight-game winning streak. The Rockets upset No. 18 Cincinnati during the win streak, moved into the nation’s Top 25 for the first time in more than a decade and were invited to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The 2013-14 seasons included 16 wins, shares of the MAC West Division championship both years and the establishment of a nationally respected power rushing attack. Toledo ranked 14th and 12th nationally in rushing offense those seasons. The ’14 campaign ended with a 63-44 victory over Arkansas State in the GoDaddy Bowl as tailback Kareem Hunt returned from injury to rush for 271 yards and five TDs.

His 2015 Toledo team – which had to replace five offensive line starters – got the nation’s attention in September with a 16-12 upset of 18th-ranked Arkansas. Following that win, the Rockets defeated Iowa State in overtime, their second Power 5 victory in a row. The 2015 Rockets ranked 27th nationally in scoring offense and 28th in scoring defense. They ran the ball (213.2) and stopped the run (115.5) and UT earned the first College Football Playoff ranking in school history.

He was honored as the 2015 MAC Coach of the Year.

Personal

Campbell’s belief system is grounded in building relationships. He has been referred to as a players’ coach often. Building relationships is at the foundation of his recruiting prowess. Rivals.com named him a “top recruiter” in 2011 and his last three classes were ranked first or second in the MAC.

His first two Iowa State recruiting classes rank among the best in school history, including the 2017 group, which was rated No. 40 nationally by Rivals, the highest by the recruiting service since 2004. The 2017 Cyclone newcomers posted a 247Sports composite ranking of .8427, the highest composite score since 2007 when the service began rating classes.

Campbell and his wife (Erica) have four young children: Kaetlyn, Isabella, Rudy and Rocco. Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Mount Union in 2002.

Campbell agreed to a new six-year contract in 2017 at a salary of $3.5 million.
