Cisco IO S softwa re contains a w ide array of
critical netw ork services designed fo r flexibility,
scalability, and reliability to help solve the most
difficult problems facing enterprises and service
providers. Customers can select the appropriate
Cisco IO S softw are feature sets to meet their
evolving network requirements. Features such as
Netw ork Address Translation (NAT), Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and Hot
Standby R outer Protocol (HSRP) can be easily
deployed individually or in combination w ith
each other across a widerangeof Cisco platforms
(from the low-end Cisco 800 series to a Cisco
7500 or Layer 3 switch).
Cisco IP Services comprises many basic and
adva nced building blocks that enable customers
to :
Deploy a n IP network w ith basic end-to-end IP
connectivity
Manage their IP addressing requirementsfrom a
central locat ion
Co ntrol the IP addressing scheme usedthroughout their network
Provide redundancy at major netw ork
connection points

DHCP for Greater Network Serviceability
D H CP is a set of Internet stand ards (RFC 2131, 2132,
1534) that enable workstat ions and devices to request an
IP address for connection to an IP network. DH CP defines
three components: client, relay agent, and server. Cisco
IOS soft w are implements all three components, and
customers use these components to simplify and manage
thedeployment of their network to both new and exist ing
locations.
NAT for Increased Scalability
NAT is an Internet standard (RFC 1631) for translatingor changing IP a ddressing information a s it passes
through an IP network. Cisco has an implementation of a
super-set of the standard, and provides customers the
ability to dynamically translate or stat ically change an IP
add ress, as w ell as multiplex ma ny users to one or a few
IP addresses.

NAT DHCP HSRP
Enables a privately addressed network
to access registered networks, such as
the Internet, without requiring registered
IP addresses on end hosts
Enables connectivity between networks
with overlapping (duplicate) private
addresses
Eliminates theneedforhostrenumbering
whenchanging Internetserviceproviders
(ISPs) or addressing schemes
Enables many-to-one IP address mapping
Automates client and device IP address
configuration, removing the
requirement for manual configuration
Enables centralized network
management
Eliminates single point of failure at the
first hop
Provides transparent fail-over without
requiring hosts to run special routing
software
Increases network availability
HSRP for High Availability
Mission-critical applications are vital to business.
Network downtime can cost mill ions of dollars per hour
in lost revenue. A reliable netw ork starts w ith a good
design that includes redundant systems and links. Cisco
IOS software reliability services include HSRP, which
provides network redundancy for IP networks in a way
tha t ensures that user traffi c w ill immediately and
transparently recover from fi rst-hop fa ilures in netw ork
edge deviceso r access circuits. HSRP is particularly useful
when users on one subnet require continuous access to
resources in the network.Cisco End-to-End Solutions
C isco internetwo rking devices interconnect more media
types than any other networking vendor. C isco IOS
softw are provides an end-to-end founda tion tha t
centralizes mana gement a nd confi guration, enab les
fault-tolerant reliability, a nd a llows netw orks to scale to
meet the demands of netwo rk grow th and emerging
services and solutions.
