Managing Safely

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Managing Safely is

designed for managers and supervisors across all industries and

IOSH Managing Safely Training

Our IOSH Managing Safely course equips managers and supervisors with

the essential health and safety skills they need every day. Delegates will

learn how to plan, implement and monitor health and safety, making real

improvements to performance and delivering both accident reduction and

Achievement of the objectives of the course will be assessed in two ways:

A 1 hour closed book written assessment (part multiple choice, part

written answer) on the last day of the course.

A practical risk assessment project and management report carried

out in the delegate's workplace within 6 weeks of the course.

A score of 50% or more must be achieved for both written and practical

assessments. An aggregate of 55% overall must be achieved to entitle the

candidate to receive a

Managing Safely certificate.

Delegates attending and successfully completing both the practical and

written assessments will be awarded a certificate from IOSH

Working Safely

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Working Safely is

designed to train employees to ensure that their actions contribute to health

and safety in the workplace and that individual responsibilities are clearly

understood. It is for people at any level in any sector, and meets the

government's guidelines for introductory health and safety training.

The course is 100% harmonious to the Health and Safety Executive's

'Passport' programme. A complete step-by-step guide that is in a very

pioneering format to inspire delegates which is critical to getting the health

and safety messages across.

The IOSH Working Safely Certification

The 'IOSH Working Safely Certificate' is awarded to all those who attend the

course and successfully complete both the written and practical

assessments.

Understanding of the course material is evaluated by means of a 20 minute

written assessment paper consisting of 10 multi-choice questions and a

practical assessment, e.g. hazard identification.

You can study IOSH Working Safely by attending a classroom course at our

training venue in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

POSL Training Services are experienced instructors who will work closely

with the attendees to ensure our bespoke IOSH course delivery suits your

Utility Safety Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA-Gas)

Scheme Overview

The Utility Safety Health and Environment Awareness (SHEA) portfolio of

schemes has been developed in conjunction with industry to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness training across the utilities sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive

guidelines.

The gas scheme is designed for all persons involved in the operational activities of the gas industry who require access to sites, both permanent and temporary, including all levels of operatives, supervisors and

management. A Utility SHEA (Gas) passport lasts for five years from the date of training.*

The Utility SHEA (Gas) scheme comprises of twelve modules. The eight core

modules are common to all utility industries and form the basis of health, safety and environmental law and practices. There are four modules that are specific to the gas industry which cover working on the network and

pressure regulating installation, and in domestic and commercial premises. All trainees will complete the core modules and depending on their job role

will complete either or both the upstream and downstream modules. It is designed to provide on-site evidence that an individual has demonstrated an appropriate level of knowledge and awareness. It is a passport scheme and

does not indicate any level of technical competence or skilled expertise.

How do I get an EUSR Card?

Registration is based on successful completion of training and assessment.

Following training POSL will apply to register the trainee. EUSR cards are issued within 28 days of receipt of the necessary completed paperwork and payment. Operatives are issued with a cover note following training to

confirm completion of the training and assessment while they wait for their card to be issued. The training session is expected to last for approximately

one working day and comprises a trainer led presentation and assessment. Trainees will be called upon to share their experiences and thoughts throughout, to build on the course material.

Transition

Individuals who have recently completed a SHEA Gas course are able to take a transition across to other SHEA schemes including CCPHSE, by

completing a shorter course which contextualises the content from the initial course. This transition route is available to any individuals with a

valid 'Eligible for SHEA reciprocity' endorsement on the website register search.

Please note: the registration gained from the transition route will expire 3

years (5 for SHEA Gas) after the initial course.

CSCS Affiliation

The Utility SHEA (Gas) scheme is affiliated with the CSCS to allow gas industry workers access to construction sites for purposes of utilities work

without the need to complete a separate CSCS card.

* - A small number of Utility SHEA (Gas) registrations were issued with a validity period of 3 years until the point where the Gas Distribution

Networks changed their policy to 5 years. These registrations were issued prior to January 2007 and are not extendable to 5 years

The Cross Country Pipelines Health, Safety and Environment (CCPHSE) awareness passport scheme has been developed in conjunction with the

pipeline industry in order to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness training across the UK, in line with Health

and Safety Executive guidelines. It is a passport scheme and does not indicate any level of technical competence or skilled expertise.

The scheme is designed for all persons involved in the construction activities of the large diameter cross country pipelines, who require access to sites,

both permanent and temporary, including all levels of operatives, supervisors and management. The scheme recognises the need to ensure that both skilled and locally recruited unskilled labour operate to the same

high standards of health and safety across the site. A CCPHSE card lasts for three years from the date of training.

The CCPHSE scheme comprises 13 modules. All these modules must be

completed by all trainees. It is designed to provide on-site evidence that an individual has demonstrated an appropriate level of health & safety knowledge and awareness.

How do I get an Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) Card?

Registration is based on successful completion of a training course. Upon

successful completion a cover note will be issued by the trainer. Once the necessary paperwork and payment have been received, trainees will be registered on the EUSR and the relevant CCPHSE card will be issued within

10 days. The training session is expected to last for approximately one working day and comprises a trainer lead presentation and assessment.

Trainees will be called upon to share their experiences and thoughts throughout to build on the course material.

CITB- SSSTS

Training Course Introduction

The CITB SSSTS training course is an accredited site supervisor’s safety

training scheme for the construction site supervisor, these are generally referred to as SSSTS training courses.

The supervisor’s safety training scheme is now a requirement set out by the major contractors group for all supervisors who will be working on their

sites. Construction skills and health and safety need to go hand in hand and made a priority to encourage improved work skills and reduced accidents

and injuries. Not only is the SSSTS training a must put in place by the MCG, it is also ideal for anyone looking to take on a supervisory role within the construction industry.

Purpose of a SSSTS Course

On the 2 day SSSTS training course the main focus will be on the importance of risk assessments in the construction industry. There is a focus on how to implement control measures on site and how to use

communication to ensure the site remains safe for everyone. Finally the

SSSTS courses work on monitoring the control measures and work making sure that the work is carried out correctly and follows the advice and guides

Delegates who attend and successfully complete a CITB SSSTS course with POSL will receive a certificate to show that they are able to help supervise in

the construction industry and have understanding when it comes to health and safety in the work place. During the course the main topics of the syllabus are:

The SSSTS training course is designed for first line mangers looking to continue or take on a supervisory role within the construction industry. The

course takes place over two days and will teach health and safety skills needed to maintain a safe site.

A thirty minute multiple choice examination will follow the training. Upon

successful completion of the SSSTS training the candidate will be awarded with the CITB Site Supervisory Safety Training Certificate.

Further Development

Successful candidates can go on to complete the 5 day site managers safety training scheme (SMSTS) course designed for site managers and

supervisors. Alternatively individuals who would like to renew their current certificate are required to attend the one day SSSTS Refresher, however

if your current certificate has expired you will not be allowed to attend the refresher course, you will be required to attend the full two day course again.

What are the Objectives and Aims of the Training?

The SSSTS Refresher course aims to raise awareness of current trends within the Health and Safety Executives direction of enforcement. Improve

awareness of recent development in construction, legislation, health and safety, waste, environmental issues and measures that support the implementation of responsibilities under new legislation.

What Will the SSSTS Refresher Course Teach?

The SSSTS Refresher training will teach individuals:

The CITB -Site Safety Plus 1-Day Health and Safety Awareness course provides a practical summary of health and safety,

welfare and environmental issues identifying individual responsibilities for looking after themselves and others, what the employers duties are and

what should be done if they think anyone’s health and safety is being put at risk.

To ensure that individual responsibilities are understood we look at;

why they are carrying out their identified duties what is expected of them

to ensure that they contribute to the safety of the workplace

At the end of the 1-Day Health and Safety Awareness course delegates will be able to:

understand the need to prevent accidents

have an understanding of health and safety law identify how their role fits into the control and management of the site understand the need for risk assessments and method statements

How Will the Course be assessed?

The method of assessment will be by multiple-choice questions at the end of the course, as well as being expected to be interactive during the course.

Further Studying and Progression

Upon successful completion of this course, a natural progression would be

the SSSTS training course (two days). Existing site managers, agents, surveyors and persons holding positions of managerial control should attend the five-day SMSTS training course.

ECITB / CCNSG Safety Passport (2 Day)

The CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme began life early in the 1990's when a consortium of major industrialists from the power generation, steel, oil, gas

and chemical industries recognised the need to train their contractors in basic safety and to a common standard. The aim of the CCNSG Passport Scheme is to ensure basic knowledge of health and safety for all site

personnel to enable them to work on site more safely

We are pleased to be able to provide ECITB approved, CCNSG Safety

Course Aim:

This course enables contract personnel to satisfy the need for high

standards in Health & Safety training in a variety of industries. The Health & Safety Passport Scheme, accredited by the ECITB is a way of only accepting personnel who hold the Contractors Safety Passport. Successful

completion of the course results in delegates being issued with an identification passport, which is valid for 3 years. This course meets the statutory requirements of the Health & Safety Executive.

Target Group:

Contractor personnel working on site who require a safety passport. This course is delivered in English and therefore a prerequisite of this course is that delegates are fluent in the English language.

Respiratory/Face Mask Fit Test Service

Face Fit Testing Service

There are two types of fit test – Qualitative & Quantitative. The type of

fit test which should be employed is dependent on the face piece being

tested. As a rule, Filter Face Pieces (FFP) & Half Masks can be tested

using a Qualitative method, all other tight fitting face pieces must use a

Quantitative test method. Loose fitting pieces do not require fit testing. A

filter face piece is either an FFP or half mask & therefore can be fit tested

using Qualitative test methods.

Why perform a Fit Test?

The performance of a tight-fitting face piece depends on achieving a good

contact between wearer’s skin & the face seal of the face piece. It is

unlikely that one particular type/size of Respiratory Protection

Equipment (RPE) face piece will fit everyone. Inadequate fit will

significantly reduce the protection provided to the wearer, exposing them

to danger & short/long-term ill health. It also checks that the wearer can

put on a respirator face piece correctly.

When should a Fit Testing be carried out?

A Fit Test can be carried out in the initial stages of selecting RPE, where

an untested face piece is already in use or when the wearer has any

significant facial changes (i.e. weight gain or loss, facial hair growth, etc).

Fit testing does not need to be done annually but it is recommended that

faced piece wearers receive annual refresher training covering the

selection, use & maintenance of their mask.

Manual Handling

This is a very popular course which runs for a day in which attendees have frequently expressed how much they have enjoyed and benefited from the

day. We begin by looking at the way we lift things today, then progress through the day by looking at the correct measures and finally practice the

new maneuvers. There is a little fun attached to this which makes the day go smoothly. We review some procedures and risk assessments to get an understanding of where things can be improved.

Objectives

To give all personnel who perform manual handling activities as a key

element of their job, the required knowledge and skill, so that they can undertake occupational manual handling activities at minimum risk to themselves and others. This will include consideration of peripheral issues

such as access arrangements, area layout, environmental influences and slips, trips and falls. This course meets the requirements of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 providing the basic knowledge and

skills for employees in the workplace to work safely whilst handling loads.

The manual handling training course is intended to provide attendees with an understanding of how to safely handle loads. It covers practical aspects of lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling loads. It also provides

information on the human spinal system, risk assessment, the legal responsibility of employers to their employees and techniques for the prevention of accidents. The manual handling course involves knowledge

development, and a series of practical exercises, followed by scenarios that allow the attendees to put their skills into practise.

Introduction to what is Manual Handling Responsibilities under Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.

Learn safer moving and handling techniques. Practical techniques and manual handling assessments.

Responsibilities of managers and senior staff. How to control and minimize the risk.

Finally

Attendees take away a whole new way of assessing a lift, carrying out the task, looking at the environmental issues and leave with much more

confidence which will benefit not only themselves but the people around them and any they may supervise

Tool Box Talks Overview

Good communication is essential for the management of health and safety on building and construction sites. It is vitally important that contractors, managers and supervisors engage and consult with the workforce, as it is an

effective way of identifying hazards and controlling risks.

Who should deliver a TOOL box talk?

It is the workforce who have firsthand experience of actually carrying out the

job and who may therefore be knowledgeable about the risks involved. Willing and effective worker participation and feedback will be achieved when the workforce:

is consulted with

has confidence in their managers and supervisors

knows their ideas and concerns will be listened to and, if required,

acted upon

has sufficient knowledge to recognise when something is not safe

has been trained in the skills necessary to deliver effective feedback.

Ample opportunity must be given for all members of the workforce to consult with management on any concerns that they have regarding health and

safety.

What are they? Tool box talks (TBT’S) are one way of delivering advice on matters of health,

safety and environment, as well as engaging in discussions to obtain feedback, thus helping to maintain and improve standards. However they are not a substitute for formal training in correct methods of instruction.

CITB GT 700 This Tool box talk’s course uses the CITB GT 700 series workbook, which

many believe is the best in the EU. It has been designed to assist supervisors at all levels to prepare and deliver effective TBT’s on building

and constructions sites. It is also a very good course for someone who may be due to deliver TBT’s or any other front of class presentation as it looks at presentation skills as well

as creation and delivery of a successful presentation. A typical format will cover but no limited too:

Legal and management

Health and welfare

General safety

High risk activities

Environment

Specialist activities

During the course participants will work individually and in teams, they will observe others, discuss their own work, combine each other’s work, act as

judges for other teams’ efforts and present their own work to the rest of the group. Lots of laughs along the way. Training does not have to be boring.

At the end of the sessions the participant will have gained an immense amount of self belief in themselves standing out front of class. They will have the ability to overcome nerves, problems and system disruptions.

Confidence will grow the more the person performs up front talks to the workforce. They will know how to captivate an audience and keep them focused thus ensuring the workforce has digested the contents of the talk

and making sure they understand the dangers on site through hazard identification and discussions over what control measures work best. When

individuals become experienced in this field they themselves can pass on these skills to others on site.
