WELCOME MESSAGE
#IONL2019
Welcome to the 2019 IONL Annual ConferenceIt is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2019 IONL Annual Conference, as we explore the theme, The Changing Face of Leadership. Over the next two days, nurses from all over Illinois will enjoy impressive Keynote speakers, educational sessions, valuable networking events and much more! This year our committees have done a great job creating a varied program catered for nurses of every level. I especially want to thank Timothy Carrigan, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, Chair of the Program Committee; Chad Thompson, DNP (c), MBA, RN, NEA-BC, Chair of the Annual Conference Subcommittee; and members of both groups for putting together a two-day program that delves into the latest research and advancements in the world of healthcare.
This year’s program features two keynote speakers: Cynthia Clark PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, on workplace incivility and the best practices for fostering healthy work environments, and Anton J. Gunn, MSW, CDM, CSP, whose closing keynote focuses on increasing your impact as a leader. We’ll also commemorate our members’ achievements and contributions to nursing at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday afternoon, and give you time to relax and connect with one another during our breaks and Welcome Reception.
The other sessions throughout the conference will dive into the complexities of the nursing profession and show you where you can push boundaries and improve your organization and career. I’m excited to see what each one of you will take away and apply towards your professional careers and organizations after attending this year’s conference.
I’m looking forward to learning alongside you and getting to know you at our social hours. Once again, welcome to the 2019 Annual Conference!
Sincerely,
Jennifer M. Grenier, DNP, RN-BC, CNML, CENPIONL 2019 President

He will also explain the Illinois healthcare legislation, both enacted and pending, including the Illinois Spring session healthcare legislative outcome, and nurses’ involvement and influence on legislation.
9:00 - 9:30 AMLeading from Behind: Engaging the Power of CollaborationJan Albers DNP, RN, PHNA-BC, CLC, Assistant Professor of Nursing at McKendree UniversityThe Future of Nursing Leading Change and Advancing Health and the Triple Aim (Institute for Healthcare Improvement [IHI], 2012) clearly indicated that no single healthcare sector or entity alone has the capabilities necessary to improve population health, and nurses are in a pivotal position to impact health outcomes. As nurses, we must look bigger and broader to engage partners to impact health. This presentation is centered on shifting the stance of leadership to create effective collaboration(s) to improve outcomes, both for the populations served and the organizations.

Throughout this presentation, we will discuss how APRNs may be well suited to be successful leaders and how their strengths are consistent with AONL executive core competencies. We will also discuss recommendations for APRNs who are interested in transitioning from the clinical to administrative ladder and explain how APRNs who are in executive or leadership positions can maintain and nourish their clinical knowledge.
10:00 - 10:30 AMNetworking BreakSponsored by:
10:30 - 11:15 AMImproving Staff Responsiveness Through a New Care Delivery Model Rachel Daniel, MSN, RN, CMSRN & Cynthia Fassero, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Nurse Managers at Memorial Medical CenterQuick response time to call lights can positively impact patient satisfaction scores by ensuring staff are visible and perceived as available to a patient during their time of need. To meet the challenge of decreasing response times, current responsibilities and work flow of nursing staff had to be redesigned to reduce interruptions and multitasking. Interruptions and multitasking extends the completion time for tasks due to constant reprioritization and time spent stopping and re-starting tasks before completion.

8:30 - 9:00 AMCommunication Strategies to Build More Effective TeamsWilliam Duffy, RN, MJ, CNOR, FAAN, Loyola University of ChicagoIn this ever-changing professional practice environment it is critical that nurse leaders connect with their teams. Organizations can no longer rely on automatic staff loyalty, the commitment has to be earned. Leaders must realize that team members are constantly evaluating if the leader is someone they can trust to help be successful in their professional careers. This multimedia presentation will identify potential barriers to connecting with your team and explore strategies leaders can use to build effective teams.
9:00 - 9:45 AMNew Directions in Leadership Michele Kramer, Ph.D, RN, AHN-BC, Associate Professor, Nursing Grad-uate Program, Coordinator of Healthcare Systems Leadership, Lewis University
Lesley Page, Ph.D, MA, BA, Associate Professor, Chair, Department of Organizational Leadership, College of Business, Lewis University
George Klemic, PhD, Professor, Business Administration, College of Business, Lewis UniversityLeadership is evolving along with organizations. What was considered an effective leader is dynamically changing in today’s complex workplaces. New aspects of transformational leadership, considered the gold standard of leadership styles, are expanding and encompassing more soft skills. We conducted a review of integrative reviews and meta-analyses about leadership in the past decade. Emerging concepts about leadership fell into four main categories: leadership styles, transformational leadership, training and development, and employee engagement. A new model of leadership education points to the future direction of an interdisciplinary leadership curriculum.
9:45 - 10:30 AMCase Study: The Evolving Role of Nursing to Reduce Community DisparityJulianna S. Sellett DNP, MBA, RN, CPHQ, CENP, Vice President of ,Com-munity Health Initiatives for the Carle Health System; Jonathan Woods, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Executive Director of Community Health Initiatives for the Carle Health SystemA case study about an east-central Illinois community will be presented. Nurse leaders of the Carle Health System are taking care outside of its traditional health system walls, and are co-leading, with multiple cross-sector partners, a bold community initiative. This initiative addresses the very complex relationship that exists between poverty, health, and education. Each partner is leveraging what each does best, and is strengthening one another, to build the capacity needed to reduce health, academic achievement, and economic disparities. Throughout the case study, nurse-driven models of community care and the evolving role of nurses and nurse leaders will be discussed. Many “lessons learned” will be shared associated with community relationships, communication (numerous levels), strategy development, execution of initiatives, team development, and changing leadership roles.

11:00 - 11:30 AMMobile Integrated Healthcare, a Community Paramedic ProgramE. Sue Thompson MSN, RN, CNML, Director of Emergency Services & Nursing Resources and Magnet Program Director at SwedishAmerican Health SystemEmergency Department recidivism was determined to be a major source of avoidable visits and lost revenue, due to payer status, for the health system. A team was formed to determine the potential positive patient, financial, safety, and quality impacts that could be potentially realized. It was determined that the majority of patients who accounted for avoidable Ed visits came from a central city geographic area. The team researched opportunities for outreach to this patient population and came to the decision that a community paramedic teamed with a nurse could provide resources and be partners in change. SwedishAmerican financially committed to subsidizing the paramedic, nurse, electronic documentation system and support staff.
