The programed aimed to bring students from all over the world to visit North Cyprus, and EMU, whilst providing them with the opportunity to study in a genuinely multicultural environment.

This year the English language program included a variety of

different courses and activities. Intensive English courses were taught by native speaker teachers from England and the USA. English Clubs meanwhile allowed students to choose from areas of personal interest to develop their reading, writing and speaking skills. There was also an IELTS preparation

program for advanced students. There were further opportunities during the summer for students to learn Turkish, Chinese, German, and French.

Students attending the summer program had plenty of opportunities to explore Northern Cyprus by participating in some of the many trips that were organized. These included a magnificent trip to old Famagusta, & a wonderful journey to the beautiful port of Kyrenia.

“The first Summer Academy took place at the Eastern Mediterranean University from the 10th until the 21st of July 2012 and gathered 20 participants from the Università della Calabria (Italy), who spent ten days engaging in current debates about archaeology, history, culture, music and, literature in the Mediterranean area. The lectures provided by Scholars from EMU, UNICAL and other universities across the world, gave the opportunity to investigate new and exciting subjects as well as to enjoy two remarkable trips to Karpaz Peninsula (Kantara Castle and Agios Philon) and Salamis Ruins.

According to the students, the program had the perfect combination of academic courses along with the exploration of this wealth of civilization in the restless & ever-changing political & cultural landscape of this wonderful region.”

What students say about EMU and the Summer Academy in Mediterranean Studies:

“Studying at EMU was an enjoyable experience! The Summer Academy allowed me to explore my interests and it was also a great practice for learning a new language during these intensive two weeks! What

better location for the Summer Academy in Mediterranean Studies than a University close to the sea and to an ancient and fascinating topography and architecture? I wish my ten days here hadn’t gone so quickly!”

The sea turtles of the Mediterranean are frequent visitors to our hot, sandy beaches.

Sea Turtle Protection & Monitoring Project on the Famagusta & Iskele Coastline

These sweet and charming creatures have been visiting us for centuries. Our summer participants had the chance to observe them throughout their hatching period.

The EMU Underwater Research Center and Imaging Center (EMU URIC) and Society of Nature & Culture conduct a joint project on the Famagusta and Iskele coastlines to protect and monitor the loggerhead and green turtles. The Project activities are conduct-ed by volunteer university students from Cyprus and abroad who patrol the coastline zone everyday and night to determine the location

of nests and cage them against dogs, foxes & other negative impacts until the hatchlings emerge. In addition, statistical data is recorded and other scientific measures are taken by the volunteers.

Summer participants in the International Summer School visited these coastlines at nights to experience the energy of nature and explore the Mediterranean mysteries. Our dedicated assistants and members of EMU URIC accompanied them on all of their trips.

Marine ProjectOne of the most prestigious projects of Summer 2012 was the Marine Project designed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Burak Ali Cicek.
