    EDITORIAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

AA group of 50 people attended a seminar. The speaker started giving each person a

balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room. Now these delegates were let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, pushing, colliding with each other, and there was utter chaos. At the end of 5 minutes, no one could find their own balloon. Now each one was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon. The speaker began. This is exactly what is happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness and you will get your own happiness. And this is the purpose of human life.

    Warmest Regards. PP Mike Tung

HH as your year been fulfilling?

A fulfilling year is not only

one chock full of people and

achievements, but it is one filled with

    meaningful events and time with

    friends and loved ones.

Our International Night and 48th Anniversary held last

Saturday was a great event. The event was well

attended by 120 Rotarians & families, friends and

representatives from embassies. Many of the ex-

Rotarians were present as well. It was certainly a great

evening and glad to see many old faces.

It was an exciting night for the students from the ID

colleges. The results for the tri club vocational project

‗Beautify My Home‘ were announced. I could see the

students eagerly waiting for the results. Nevertheless, I

must congratulate them for their works. I can see a lot

of effort was put into revitalizing the 3 welfare homes.

Well done! Thank you Director Elaine Tan.

The 48th Anniversary celebration was a joyous

celebration. The club has come a long way, 48 years of

history. Thank you PE Patrick for putting the video

    together.

I want to thank all the sponsors for the food and drinks,

Rtn Steven Ho for the PA system and all the Rotarians

who were there early to help set up the venue. I also

have to thank Rtn Tenny for lending her house. Last

but not least, I want to thank all the Rotarians who

have helped in one way or another to make this event

possible. And a special thanks to the OC PP Kumar and

PDG Dr Paul Lee in coordinating the entire event.

Please remember our AGM on 19th December. Your

attendance and support is of utmost importance to the

    Club.

    Have a pleasant week ahead!

    SPEAKER’S CV

CAPTAIN LIM KHOY HING Captain Lim Khoy Hing is an ex-airline pilot who is passionate about flying, having worked all his life high above the clouds since leaving college. Prior to his retirement from flag-carrier Malaysia Airlines, he was fortunate enough to fly the latest fly-by-wire planes such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A320, A330 and A340. He has logged a total of 25,500 flying hours, or about 20 trips to the moon and back. Capt. Lim started his flying career in the Royal Malaysian Air Force, having been trained by the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom in 1967. He served for about 13 years in the service before joining Malaysia Airlines. In 2006, he joined low-cost carrier AirAsia, then its long-haul sister airline AirAsia X until 2011, when he retired at the age of 65. He is currently a simulator flight instructor for AirAsia X and AirAsia. He also trains airlines pilots at the Asian Aviation Centre of Excellence (a joint venture between AirAsia and CAE, a simulation and modelling technology provider), located near Kuala Lumpur International Airport. In his storied career, Capt. Lim encountered many passengers who were afraid of flying and had many questions about their fears and flying in general. And that was how askcaptainlim.com was born. On his website, he tackles questions from the common (‗How do I become a pilot?‘) to the more unusual (‗Will being a pilot compromise my husband‘s fidelity?‘). The website, which has been going for 12 years, now contains more than 1,000 answers. Capt. Lim read law as an external student with the University of London while he was with the airlines. The many sleepless nights and hours of study paid off when he was finally awarded an LL.B (Hons) and a Malaysian Certificate of Legal Practice, although he did not seriously pursue law as a career. Flying was much more fun. Capt. Lim is happily married with a son and a daughter who resides in London. He has five grandchildren. He enjoys spending time playing with his grandchildren and writing articles for Travel 3Sixty. He still maintains askcaptainlim.com for the benefit of aspiring pilots and fearful flyers and can be contacted via the website.

    DISTRICT NEWS

FINANCIAL contributions from Malaysian Rotarians to the Rotary Foundation this year almost doubled that of last year‘s contributions, according to new Rotary International president Gary C. K. Huang. He foresees Malaysian involvement in international humanitarian projects will also increase. Huang is the first Taiwanese president of the club which was founded 109 years ago. He first joined the Rotary Club of Taipei, Taiwan in 1976, made a stop in Malaysia while on his travels last month and shared his experiences as Rotary International president. ―It is a very challenging position with many expectations. ―Since I first became vice-president, I had to visit Rotary clubs worldwide so I have been to more than 120 countries to date,‖ said Huang, who is very passionate about humanitarian service. With more than 34,000 clubs in 206 countries, the Rotary club is a humanitarian service organisation most known for taking the lead in worldwide efforts to eradicate polio. ―After more than 25 years, Rotary‘s contributions have resulted in a 99.9% reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide and we are this close to making it the second human disease in history to be fully eradicated, after smallpox,‖ said Huang. After bringing down the number of annual polio cases from 450,000 to less than 400, only three countries in the world — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria — have yet to be declared polio-free. Since becoming the first ethnically Chinese president in the middle of this year, he has also introduced Mandarin as the newest addition to Rotary International‘s eight current official languages. ―In China, civil law does not permit groups of more than 20 people to meet regularly without special permission. ―For this reason, up until now, there have only been three Rotary clubs in China and only expatriates are permitted to join,‖ explained Huang. However, under Huang‘s leadership, he hopes to boost the growth of Rotary clubs and the number of Rotarians worldwide, especially among Chinese people. At the start of his term, Huang had also challenged Rotarians worldwide to raise membership numbers from 1.2 million to 1.3 million. ―Many of our members also tend to be older people, so it is also my hope that the Rotary clubs start attracting younger people in their thirties to join, as this will help our organisation grow,‖ said Huang. ―Now that Chinese is an official language for Rotary International, two new Chinese-speaking clubs have been opened in Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur,‖ said Rotary District 3300 (Malaysia) governor Kirenjit Kaur. Huang also expressed his satisfaction with how much Rotary clubs in Malaysia were doing. ―As a multicultural community, I feel that Malaysian Rotarians have the advantage of having less language barriers and are able to work well with many other countries,‖ he commented.
