TOM PIKE Former Vice Chairman and President, Research & Development

Solutions, QuintilesIMS. He also was president of the Research &

Development Solutions Global Business Unit, leading the world’s largest

contract research organization (CRO). Supported by high-powered

concentrated his career in the healthcare and technology industries, and he is

fields. With more than 30 years of experience, Tom brings an integrated,

In 2012, Tom joined Quintiles as chief executive officer and was appointed to

the Quintiles board of directors. In 2013, he led its initial public offering, and

in the following year Quintiles was named to the Fortune 500. Before joining

Quintiles, Tom spent 22 years at Accenture, including 15 years in leadership

roles, partnering with many of its key clients globally. As managing director

JACK BAILEY is President, US Pharmaceuticals at GlaxoSmithKline plc. Prior

to leading the US business, Jack served as Senior Vice President, Policy,

Payers and Vaccines. In that role, Jack was responsible for Government

Affairs, Managed Markets, the US Vaccines business unit and the Puerto Rico

operations. Jack joined GSK in May 2009 following a successful 18-year

career with Eli Lilly, where he most recently served as Senior Vice President,

FRAN O'SULLIVAN is the IBM Senior State Executive for North Carolina and

Senior Location Executive for IBM at Research Triangle Park, NC, one of the

largest IBM sites in the world. She is known for being passionate about

driving client experience, transformation, leadership and technical

development. Fran is also the General Manager of IBM Global Business

Services (GBS) Global Operations, where she oversees the operations and

transformation of IBM’s consulting business.

MICHAEL KASTAN, M.D., Ph.D. is the Executive Director of the Duke

Cancer Institute. Prior to coming to Duke in 2011, he had been a Professor of

Oncology at Johns Hopkins and Cancer Center Director at St. Jude Children’s

Research Hospital. His highly cited research has led to numerous honors,

including election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National

NEAL FOWLER is the Chief Executive Officer at Liquidia. Mr. Fowler has

been Chief Executive Officer of Liquidia Technologies, Inc. since March

2008. He is a founding officer of Envisia and joined Liquidia in 2008 after

seven successful years at Johnson & Johnson (J&J). Mr. Fowler served as the

President of Janssen Biotech, Inc (formerly Centocor Inc.), a subsidiary of

U.S. health care major Johnson & Johnson since August 2006 and its Chief

Executive Officer since August 31, 2006.

DONALD GINTZIG joined WakeMed Health & Hospitals as interim president

& CEO on October 25, 2013 and was named the new president & CEO in

May 2014. In this role, he is responsible for leading the 884-bed, private not

for profit teaching and tertiary health system with more than 8,500 employees,

1,200 physicians on its medical staff, 1,500 volunteers and one million patient

encounters each year.

ZAHER EL-ASSI “Z”(Zaher) serves as Vice President of Sales Transformation

for IBM Watson Health, defining the new way Watson Health goes to market.

He has been with IBM or IBM-acquired assets for a decade. Previously, he

served as President of Merge Healthcare’s eClinical division, where he led the

creation of Merge eClinicalOS, a cloud-based data capture and management

solution for the clinical trial industry.

STEVE MALIK is a visionary entrepreneur with three decades of health

BRAD WILSON is president and CEO of the state's largest health insurer. To

address health care issues nationally, Wilson serves as a director of the Blue

Cross and Blue Shield Association, America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP)

and BCS Financial Corporation. In North Carolina he chairs the Blue Cross

and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. He is also a board member of

the Research Triangle Regional Partnership and a past chair of the University

of North Carolina Board Of Governors.

GLEN TULLMAN is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Livongo

Health. He is also a successful entrepreneur and co-founder and Managing

Partner of 7wire Ventures, a Chicago-based investment firm focused on

FRANK B. HOLDING, Jr. is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of

Raleigh-headquartered First Citizens BancShares Inc. and its First Citizens

Bank subsidiary.

He was elected Chairman in February 2009 and has served as Chief Executive

Officer since January 2008. Holding directs the company with a focus toward

a disciplined approach to banking, strong asset quality, a long-term

perspective and attention to the needs of clients. Under his leadership, First

SCOTT A. BYERS, MBA, JD joined EDM Americas as President & CEO in

2008 and led the transformation from a records management provider to an

information management company.

As chief executive, Byers helped EDM Americas with a four- company

merger. Prior to leading EDM, Byers held various executive and leadership

roles in finance, operations and legal departments.

Byers earned a Juris Doctor (JD) from the American University Washington

Dr. KEVIN CAMPBELL is an internationally recognized cardiologist and well-

known national media personality. Dr. Campbell was raised in North

Carolina, where he was educated at North Carolina State University. Dr.

Campbell graduated as Valedictorian with a Bachelor’s degree in

Biochemistry. He then attended medical school at Wake Forest University and

was the recipient of the Fullerton Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Upon

graduation, Dr. Campbell completed his Internship and Residency in Internal

Dr. Campbell is recognized as a leader in the use of social media in medicine

and is a highly sought after speaker, both in the US and abroad. Dr. Campbell

has a particular passion for addressing gender disparities in care and

prevention of sudden cardiac death in women.

while managing over 100 people across 19 countries. He began his consulting

career with A.T. Kearney in 1993 after spending ten years in Corporate

America with technical, sales and marketing positions with Fortune 100

Mr. Laurin received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering

from Union College in 1982 and his MBA, with honors, in business strategy

2017 PANEL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr. DANIEL GEORGE is a tenured Professor of Medicine and Surgery,

Divisions of Medical Oncology and Urology in the Duke University School of

Medicine. He also has appointments in the Duke Clinical Research Institute

and the Duke Cancer Institute where he is the Director of Genitourinary (GU)

Oncology. He an internationally recognized clinical researcher and thought

leader in GU malignancies, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications. His

areas of research include new drug development and biomarkers of GU

cancers with an emphasis on signal transduction pathways and angiogenesis.

Dr. George is principal investigator of the Duke site for the Department of

Defense (DOD) Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Consortium since 2006,

specializing in Phase I and II studies in prostate cancer.

He is also the PI of the MaRCC registry in advanced renal cell carcinoma and

Co-PI of the PCF 5000, an international, multi-sponsor supported registry in

advanced prostate cancer.

Nationally, Dr. George has served on the ASCO scientific committee from

2010-2012 and as the program chair of the GU committee in 2012. He

currently serves on two grant committees for AACR. He is the scientific

leader for kidney cancer in the Alliance Cooperative Group since 2011 and

serves on the Alliance GU scientific committee, NCI GU Steering Committee

and the NCI Renal Task Force. He also serves as a senior editor for Clinical

Cancer Research, Clinical Advances in Hematology and Oncology, and

Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases.

KIMBERLY L. BLACKWELL, M.D. is Professor of Medicine and Assistant

Professor of Radiation Oncology at Duke University Medical Center. One of

the nation’s leading breast cancer researchers, Blackwell has played a major

role in developing therapies that represent revolutionary non-chemotherapy

based approaches for treating breast cancer. Her work on promising new

therapies that selectively target breast tumor cells led to her inclusion on

TIME magazine’s 2013 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

More recently, her work has led to the approval of the first biosimilar

treatment for cancer in the United States. Her current research interests

include triple negative breast cancer and cancer that has spread to the brain.

She has served as the principal investigator or co-principal investigator of

more than 50 cancer clinical trials.

Among her honors, Blackwell is a recipient of the Young Investigator Award

in breast cancer from the NCI Specialized Program of Research Excellence

and the Joseph Greenfield Award for Mentorship of Clinical Research. In

2015, she was recognized as a distinguished Caskey Lecturer by the

University of South Carolina, and was awarded the Distinguished Alumni

award by Duke University.

Blackwell received her undergraduate degree in bioethics at Duke University

and her medical degree at Mayo Clinic Medical School. She completed an

internal medicine internship and residency and a hematology-oncology

fellowship at Duke University Medical School, where she joined the faculty in

2000.

JULIE ANN SOSA, MD MA FACS is Professor of Surgery and Medicine

(Oncology) at Duke University, where she serves as Chief of Endocrine

Surgery and Director of the Surgical Center for Outcomes Research, as well

as Leader of the Endocrine Neoplasia Diseases Group at the Duke Cancer

Institute and the Duke Clinical Research Institute, a large transdisciplinary

group of clinicians and researchers. Her clinical interest is in endocrine

surgery, with a focus in thyroid cancer. She is an NIH-funded investigator and

author of more than 240 peer-reviewed publications and 50 book chapters,

largely focused on outcomes research, health care delivery,

hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer, with a focus on clinical trials.
