About Social Finance Social Finance encompasses both below-market and commercial-rate investments generating financial returns and measurable public benefits. It now spans all asset classes, from Fixed Income (such as microfinance) to Equity (e.g. responsible investments) and Private Equity (e.g. carbon finance), even stretching into Venture Philanthropy (through patient seed capital or soft loans for example).

Taking a private capital approach to sustainable development primarily benefits “social enterprises” which is a broad label for a diverse set of NGOs and SMEs. This can include wind farms, rural cooperatives, or clinics using the fees of their wealthier patients to subsidize services for the less fortunate. In the UK alone, the Office of the Third Sector estimates there are 55,000 social enterprises contributing GBP 8bn a year to GDP.

Social Finance is an incipient industry holding great promise. Yet sizeable obstacles remain that are constraining a systemic shift of capital markets in favor of social investing. These include a short track record for most available products, investor awareness of real risk-adjusted financial performance, industry-wide standardization regarding valid indicators of public-interest outcomes, the occasional subsidizing of returns, and legal social investment definitions that vary from one jurisdiction to the next.

Social Finance aims ultimately to complement public funding and charitable giving in the pursuit of scalable solutions to some of the more pressing challenges of our times.
