Location InformationThis year’s conference location, Turin, is located in the beautiful Piedmont with its mountains, hills and historical sites.

The CityThe City of Turin is a major business and cultural centre and capital of the Piedmont region. Having been Italy’s first capital, Turin offers a very beautiful historical architecture – with 14 castles and a vast amount of sites, churches and parks. Important companies such as FIAT, IVECO, Lavazza and Martini are headquartered in Turin. In your free-time you may wander through the arcades of the city center, stroll

along the river Po, enjoy the alpine panorama view from the “Monte dei Cappucini” or visit one of the many famous museums such as the Egyptian Museum, the Museo dell’automobile, or the Mole Antonelliana, Turin’s landmark, which today hosts the museum of film art.

TransportationThe city can be reached by car, train, and plane. The city’s airport Caselle is only about 30 km away from the city center, which can then be reached by train, taxi or bus. Also Milan’s three international airports are not too far away. From the airports the Lingotto Congress Center

Turin can be reached by taxi, bus or train.

The VenueThe Lingotto Conference Center is located in FIAT’s former production site, in the Lingotto quarter. In 1989 it was turned into a conference area and today also hosts a large cinema, a shopping center and two hotels. On the roof of the building it still hosts the former FIAT Test area, well known from movies and documentaries. The conference center with its generous spaces for presentation sessions, meetings

and exhibition space offers the perfect location for the 6th European Altair Technology Conference. More information about the venue at: www.centrocongressilingotto.it.

Dear Customer and valued Partner,

I am pleased to welcome you to the 6th European Altair Technology Conference (EATC) in Turin, Italy.

I am proud to say that, since its inception in 2007, our European HTC has grown into one of Europe’spremier PLM technology events. In November 2011 the 5th European HTC brought more than 500 industry professionals to Bonn, from a broad range of industry verticals.

For this issue of our Technology Conference we have implied some significant changes. The date of the European HTC conference, traditionally taking place in fall, has been changed to spring to bet-ter meet the schedules of our customers and partners, which caused a 1,5 year break in our yearly conference schedule. Additionally we also change the name of our conference from HTC to ATC (Altair Technology Conference). This name change reflects Altair’s growing technology portfolio. I’m there-fore looking forward to many new program points during the three days in Turin.

In addition to the classical HyperWorks Sessions we will also offer sessions on our solutions for Grid and Cloud Computing (PBS Professional), Business and Engineering Analytics, our partner solutions from the APA, and design automation. In addition to the 10 keynote presentations don’t miss the 16 technology tracks, and our Meet the Expert Session. Choose from our broad program and use the opportunity to network with your peers from across industries and learn more about the Altair solutions.

I’m looking forward to three interesting days full of information, communication and networking with you in Turin.

Dr. Michael HoffmannSenior Vice President European Operations

Seminar 1: HyperWorks Applications in Powertrain DevelopmentTransportation companies have to develop more efficient powertrains to meet an increasing fuel economy, CO2, and customer requirements. The lack of harmonization of worldwide legislation coupled with expanding technology options lead to a significant design challenge. CAE is an integral part of the solution to help companies meet this challenge. The seminar will discuss how HyperWorks 12.0 offers a complete and ef-ficient solution to model, simulate and optimize powertrain systems. We will review practical ex-amples of evaluating NVH, thermal-mechanical and durability load cases using the FEA solver OptiStruct and present new optimization tech-

niques for noise reduction and light-weighting. Seminar topics:• Overview of industry applications• Efficient parametric CAE / template based

model generation• Optimization for light-weight design• Optimization for noise reduction• Single solver environment for NVH,

thermal-mechanical and durability• Advanced powertrain NVH simulation and

post-processing techniques• Customization / process integration• Support of legacy models• Real live applications (demos)

Multibody system simulation is a powerful ap-proach to understand and improve the overall performance of complex mechanical and me-chatronics systems. It can be applied throughout the design process, from concept design to the detailed design phase. The seminar will discuss how HyperWorks can be used to model, simu-late and optimize multibody systems in various industries. Since nowadays most systems are a combination of mechanical and electronic sub-systems the interaction with control system de-sign software will be addressed in detail.

Seminar topics:• Overview of industry applications• Parametric model generation • System simulation• Flexible Bodies / interfacing with FE-pro-

grams• Control systems and actuators modeling /

interfacing with 1D-simulation programs• Optimization and Design of Experiments• Customization / process integration• Support of legacy models

Seminar participants will receive a copy of the NAFEMS publication: “Why do Multi-Body System Simulation?”.

Seminar 2: Multibody System Simulation with HyperWorks

Report generation is an integral component of product development processes. In VPD process-es huge amounts of data arise. Documenting models, screening, collecting and understand-ing results data consumes a lot of time of highly qualified engineers. Automatic report genera-tion offers time savings and gives the engineer more time to focus on his actual task: engineer-ing, decision making, and product development. Quality assurance can also be considered an important benefit of automated reporting rou-tines. Model statistics and modeling errors will be shown by automatic check routines instantly. Outsourced submodels can be included to the master model without any risk of inconsisten-cies or quality issues later. Automated model and result reports can be de-ployed to Microsoft Office or web applications.

Traceability is given by linking these routines to PDM and SDM systems. The seminar will discuss the benefits regarding time savings, quality assurance and traceability and show technical principles.Seminar topics:• Overview of industry applications• Reports for model checking and quality

assurance• Automatic reporting of simulation results

like stress/ strain/ deformation reporting• Automated hot spot detection• Data linking to Microsoft Office applications• Publishing to web applications• Report integration to PLM and SDM systems• SAO; automatic reporting of software usage

and optimization• Customization / process integration

"It has been an honor to attend the 5th European HyperWorks Technology Conference as a

keynote speaker. In our pres-entation we have outlined the

advantages of CFRP materials in the design and manufacture of

racing car survival cells and crash structures, as well as the skills

we have acquired during the last 25 years. The event organized by

Altair has become increasingly important over the years, not

only to remain aligned with the state-of-the-art of FEA technolo-gies, but it is also an opportunity

to meet with new partners and reinforce existing relationships."

“We were very glad to accept Altair’s invitation to take part at the European HTC Conference. We believe it is always very important to meet other CAE users, to be able to share ideas and discuss problems, solutions and enhancement, also in application fields that are dif-ferent from ours. We especially liked the “meet the expert” session, a unique opportunity to meet software developers and to get detailed information about our specific applications.”
