Maintaining the Economic Artery of the Delta Region

2014 DRA Investments into Small Public Ports

Nearly 10 million people in the Delta region and an estimated 15 million more in the Upper Mississippi region rely on the Mississip-pi River as a lifeline for economic development, agriculture, com-merce, drinking water, food, and recreation. It is a major source of job creation, a vital support for our region’s communities and business-es, and the vehicle for our region to export Delta-made products to global marketplaces.

Of our nation’s inland and navigable waterways, an estimated 75 percent are within the Mississippi River system, making it the busi est water transportation artery in the country. This system supports a transportation industry that operates between $50 billion and $60 billion of commerce each year. Additionally, more than 1 million jobs rely directly on the Mississippi River through ports and terminals, freight and shipping, and agriculture.

Over the past 13 years, DRA has supported the small public ports that allow this river to succeed. With 19 small public ports direct-ly on the Mississippi River, five major ports in southern Louisiana, and many more small ports on its tributaries, DRA’s focus on port and harbor infrastructure is an important part of strengthening the economy of the Delta region.

With an export economy of $2.35 trillion in 2014, Delta communi-ties must take advantage of their greatest asset and resource for economic success: the Mississippi River system. The DRA remains committed to protecting and supporting the industries, economies, and people of the Delta region for whom the Mississippi River is our heart and soul and will continue to help small public ports maintain their harbors and provide modern infrastructure and services to traffic along the Mississippi River, creating opportunities for an export economy that will drive regional success.
