Historical note: Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858-1937) was a distinguished colonial official in China and a collector. His first appointments were in Hong Kong, from 1882, but in 1902 he was appointed first civil commissioner of Weihaiwei, in north-east China. He retired in 1921. His collections were given to George Watson’s College in Edinburgh, his old school, in 1967 by his daughter Mary (Mrs Betty Joel). Extent: 8.63m.
