The Inuit

Who?Inuit are the people of the Arctic, in the Northwest Territories, Labrador and Quebec in Canada, above tree line in Alaska (where people are called the Inupiat and Yupik), and in Russia (where people are called the Yupik people). In some areas, Inuit people are called “Eskimos” however many Inuit find this term offensive. The word “Inuit” means “the people” in the Inuktitut language.

• When– Archeologists believe that the Inuit began to move

from modern Greenland between 4500 BC and 2500 BC

– The Inuit are thought to have arrived in Alaska approximately 1000 years ago

• Where– The original Inuit people, began moving from what

is now Siberia, across the Bearing Land Bridge to what is now Alaska and the Canadian Territories

• Why– They hunted musk ox, caribou, reindeer, seals and

whales– They were always following the herds- as the

herds moved, they had to follow them

• How– During the last ice age, the land between Russia

(Siberia) and Alaska was connected by ice– As the animals began to move across the ice

sheet, the early Inuit followed along the Bering Bridge (now the Bering Straight)

– When the ice began to melt, the bridge disappeared

The Hunt

• The Inuit would hunt for their food- to capture seals, the Inuit Hunter would find a small hole in the ice where seals come to breath- they would place a polar bear hair over the hole and wait for it to move (meaning there was a seal under the ice taking a breath) the harpoon the seal through the hole

• An igloo is a hut, made of blocks, typically snow but also sod (in the summer months when it is warmer)

• Inuit would travel and hunt using kayaks (qajaq) and dog sled teams• Both methods do not require petrol• Kayaks were made with animal skin stretched over a bone frame• Dog sleds were built using bone and wooden frames with animal fur wrapped

around water dripped on the skies, to make them icy and more slippery• Why did hunters HAVE TO learn the “Inuit Roll”
