2006

Before you can login you must know your USERNAME (USERCODE) and PASSWORD.

Password - For students enrolled for the first time at Canterbury, your password is the 6-8 character one you collected after you collected your Canterbury Card at enrolment. If you did not collect your password at enrolment you can collect it from an IT Password station at the IT Helpdesk or in the Loft

- For all other students, it is the same as the year before. If you have forgotten your password you will need to go to the IT Helpdesk, with your Canterbury Card for identification

UserName Your Username is on your Canterbury Card.

If you don't have either then contact the IT Helpdesk in person.

What is my Password and Username?

2. In the "Password" box type your password

3. The domain, if required, is UOCNT

How to Login

1. In the "User name" box type your User name.1

Task: Use the Start menu

1. You can use the start menu to access useful programs.

Task: View the IT computer accounts

2.Double click on the ‘Accounts and Passwords’ icon.

1. Double click on the 'Help' icon on the Desktop.

(The ‘Accounts and Passwords’ icon launches IE (a Web Browser) and navigates to the Web Interface for the Student Accounts system.)

3. When prompted type in your User name and password.

4. Click once on the ‘Canterbury Card Account’ button on the left-hand side

The ‘My Documents (P Drive)’ folder is an area of disk allocated to you on the IT File Servers. You can save files to this area.

Manage Your Files

Do not save files to any other area of the server disk

To view the files saved in ‘My Documents (P Drive)’ double click on the ‘My Documents (P Drive)’ icon on the Desktop

You can also save files to:

• CD writers - all workrooms• DVD Writers – Only on some of the

e-Macs• USB Drives (aka: Pen Drives, sticks,

memory sticks)• Facilities can be seen at:

The Course Folders (K Drive) is used by your lecturer to store files.

This task could also be used to copy a file from you’re ‘My Documents (P Drive)’

1. Double click on the ‘Course Folders (K Drive)’ icon on the desktop.

Task: Copy a file from a Course Folder

2. In the new window that pops up, double click on the ‘EVERYONE’ folder - note you may need to scroll down or across to see the folder, to scroll click on the little triangle in the bottom corner of the window.

3. Move the mouse over the file called ‘backup’ and use the right mouse button to click on the file, a menu will appear, then use the left mouse button and click on copy.

4. Close down the ‘Course Folders’ window. ( To do this click on the X in the top right hand corner of the window, or select ‘close’ from the ‘file’ menu)

5. Now double click on the ‘My Documents (P Drive)’ icon on the desktop and then right click in the open window, this will bring up a menu, then left click on paste. The file will then start copying.

Note - You can copy files only to your P Drive or to CD Rom.

Task: Delete a file

IMPORTANT - Once you delete a file you will not be able to get it back

1. Double Click on the ‘My Documents (P Drive)’ folder icon on the Desktop.

2. Right click on the file you want to delete.

3. Left click on delete to delete the file.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is used for word processing - e.g., typing essays

To start ‘Microsoft Word’ double click on the ‘Microsoft

Word’ icon on the Desktop

Task: Save a new, unnamed document

1. Type some words into the new empty document that was created for you when you started MS Word.

2. Click on the ‘File’ menu then click once on ‘Save’

3. In the ‘File Name:’ box, type a name for the document

4. Once you have entered the name click on the save button to save the file

1. Save your documents at regular intervals; i.e., every 10 minutes.

2. Steps 3 and 4 are unnecessary if the document has already been saved and given a name.

Notes on saving in MSWord

1. While still in MS Word, click once on the ‘File’ menu then click once on ‘Open’.

Task: Open an existing document

2. The window that pops up lets you choose what file you want to open.

3. Next to the ‘Look in’ box, click on the triangle, to bring down the menu and then click on ‘class on canterbury.ac.nz’ and then scroll to the ‘Everyone’ folder and double click on it

4. Click on the file called ‘backup’ and then click on ‘Open’ in the bottom right hand corner of the window.

Task: Save a document to another location (E.g., a Floppy disk)

1. Click on the file menu, then click on ‘Save As’

2. Click on the small triangle near My Documents and select 3 ½ Floppy (A:)

3 Click the ‘Save’ Button

1. Click on the ‘File’ menu, then click on ‘Save As’

Task: Save a document in another format

This is used for transferring files between home and university

2. Click on the small triangle next to the ‘Save As Type’ box.

3. Choose your desired type from the drop down menu (Rich Text Format, rtf , in this case)

Exit from Microsoft Word

1.To exit from MS Word (or any other program) click once on the ‘File’ menu then click once on the ‘Exit’

Don’t do this yet, however, as we need MS Word open briefly for the next section.

1.Go to the ‘File’ menu and click on ‘Print’.

Make sure you are happy with the layout of the document BEFORE you choose to print multiple copies of it. The best way to check that you are happy with the document is to PRINT OUT ONE COPY OF IT FIRST and proof read it.

Printing

2. When you are sure you have selected your options correctly click the ‘OK’ button.

Remember!You are charged for every

page you print

You can print on both sides on the page in the:

•Loft•VaultPassageway•Crypt

Please see the instructions in that particular workroom.

Double sided printing

2. Double Click on the ‘Colour Printers’ icon.

Task: Install Colour Printers and Black and White Printer

1. Double click on the 'Help' icon on the Desktop.

Task: Install Colour Printers

3. Double Click on ‘Install Colour Printers and Black and White Printer’

4. Click Open

5. Read message and click ok

Task: Print in Colour

After you have installed colour printers, do the following.

1. Choose File / Print from the menu.

2. Pull down the pull down menu and choose a colour printer – in this case- ITColourPass

3. Press OK

4. Collect printing from the Copy Centre.

Internet

A browser is a program that allows users to look at and interact with all the information on the ‘World Wide Web’.

Firefox and Internet Explorer are used to browse the Internet. For this tutorial, however, we will use Internet Explorer (IE)

To start IE, double click on the ‘Internet Explorer’ icon on the Desktop.

IE has been set to open at the University of Canterbury homepage. If at any time you wish to return to this page you can do so by clicking once on the ‘Home’ button.

The ‘Address:’ box shows the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) or Internet Address being displayed, e.g. http://www.canterbury.ac.nz

Task:Visit the IT Homepage

2. Click once on ‘Departments and Colleges’

1. Make sure IE is displaying the University of Canterbury homepage. If it is not click the ‘Home’ button

1.Click once on ‘Information Technology’ under the heading ‘Service Centres’.

2. Click on the link ‘Students’ [under For]

3. Take note of the available links e.g., ‘Printing’ or ‘How to use the workroom computer systems’

Return to the University of Canterbury homepage by clicking on the ‘Back’ button twice. Notice that the ‘Back’ button takes you back through each Web page you viewed to get to the IT Department Homepage.

1. Use the mouse and click inside the ‘Address:’ box.

2. Delete the existing entry

3. Type in the following: http://library.canterbury.ac.nzand press the ‘Return’ or ‘Enter’ key on the keyboard.

Task: Visit the UOC Library homepage by entering in the URL

My WebCT

1. Start WebCT by double clicking on the ‘WebCT’ icon on the Desktop.

2. Click onto the ‘Log in to WebCT’ link

3. Now, Log on with your usual User name and password[more information on passwords is available later in this tutorial]

Task: Access your student transcript

1. Double click on the ‘Help’ folder icon on the Desktop

2. Double click on the ‘UCStudent (Course Changes’ icon

3. Enter your username and password

E-mail

Thunderbird Mail is for sending and receiving e-mail

Your e-mail address is: [email protected]

Task: Send a message to yourself

1. To open e-mail, double click on the ‘Mozilla Thunderbird’ icon on the Desktop

2. When prompted, enter your password to access your e-mail

3. Click ‘OK’

4. Click on the ‘Write’ button

4. To send a message to yourself, type in the ‘To’ box your user name e.g., abcl2. (You will find that your user name will expand with ‘@student.canterbury.ac.nz’; just keep typing)

5. Click in the ‘Subject:’ box and type a subject (or title) you want to give to your message

6. Click in the message-body area7. Type in the text you wish to send

8. When you have finished click on the ‘Send’ button to send the message.

9. If prompted, type in your password If you receive a message ‘Login Failed’, you have probably entered your password incorrectly10. The message is now sending. A copy of your message will be saved to the sent mail folder

Open or select the message you would like to reply to. Click once on the ‘Reply’ button. The address and the contents of the original message will automatically be copied across into the new message. Then you can add your reply

Task: Reply to a message

When you have finished editing your message click once on the ‘Send’ button to send the message

Note: If you continue to get the message ‘Login Failed’ tell the Loft Workroom SUPERVISOR or ring the HelpDesk at ext 6060.

Task: Read a new message

Use the mouse to select the ‘Inbox’ folder on the left-hand side of the ‘Thunderbird Mail Window’.

This opens the ‘Inbox’ Mail folder. Note that unread messages appear with bold titles until they are read.

To open a mail message, use the mouse to select the message. The contents of the message will appear in the bottom half of the ‘Mail Window’

If there are no messages in the ‘Inbox’ folder then use the ‘Get Mail’ button to check if any new messages have arrived

Task: Delete messages from a mail folder

Note: A red cross next to your message means that it has been marked for deletion. Messages deleted from the Inbox will be removed when you exit Thunderbird.

1. Select Message youwant to delete

2. Press the Delete key on your keyboard or the Delete icon on the toolbar

To remove deleted messages from folders other than the Inbox, use the Compress Folders option. To do this, [1] click once on the folder to be compressed, click once on the [2] ‘File’ menu and choose [3] ‘Compact Folders’.

Adding Money To Your Account:1

Computer charges will be deducted directly from your Canterbury Card account.

This can be done in the Libraries via:

EFT-Pos

Money loading machines

1.Add money to your Canterbury Card.

Note: This is done on any of the money machines located in each of the main libraries, normally beside the photocopiers. There is also a money machine in the Loft.

(NB: There are EFPOS machines in all the libraries)

Task: Add money to your account via a Money Machine

Wait ….

30 minutes for printing

One hour to use the Internet.

Logout and then Login again.

2. Double click on the ‘Accounts and Passwords’ icon.

3. Follow the instructions on the screen

Task: Check your balance

1. Double click on the 'Help' icon on the Desktop.

Passwords

Task: Change your Password

Note: Make changing your password the last thing you do before you ‘Logoff’.

1. Double click on the 'Help' icon on the Desktop.

2. Double click the ‘Accounts and Passwords’ icon

3. Follow the instructions on the web page

Allow at least 30 minutes for your password

to change

It is important that you always Logoff from any computer after use.

Failure to do so is an invitation for any

dishonest person to use your account for downloading from the Internet, printing or for sending e-mail in your name.

Logging Off

You are liable for any charges.

1. To Logoff, exit all open applications (programs) and click on the ‘Start’ button in the bottom left hand corner of the

Desktop.

Getting Help

2. Double clicking on the ‘Help’ icon on the desktop will provide access to useful links – such as on-line help and a fault reporting form.

1. Help within an application, such as MS Word, is available by clicking on the word ‘Help’ in the menu bar.

Computer Regulations and Codes of Practice

Computer Regulations and Codes of Practice are displayed in the Workrooms and in the IT Student Handbook. You must at all times adhere to the Computer Regulations and Codes of Practice and therefore you should familiarise yourself with them.
