succeed@solent is a website for students at
Southampton Solent University, full of guidance and
advice on how to become a better student.
To help students prepare for university life there is a
shorter version called succeed@solent lite which is freely
available for anyone to access:

Preparing for university
When you first come to university, whether from school,
college, or the workplace, there are lots of things you
will be expected to do that may be new to you.
For instance, have you ever:
given a presentation in front of an audience?
been given feedback on your work that you need to
do something with – use the feedback to improve
your future work?
used referencing to show the sources of ideas in
your work?
used critical thinking?
carried out academic research?
You may have written essays and reports in the past,
but it is important to realise that at university you’ll be
expected to write in a certain way to get good grades.
At Southampton Solent University there is a variety of
support to help students develop their learning skills,
whether you are a fresher or undertaking a PhD - from
workshops run in the library through to the online guide
succeed@solent.
But, you may want to start improving your academic
skills before you start university and succeed@solent lite
will help you do this.
What is in succeed@solent lite?
You will find tutorials grouped around topics such as:
Writing

Referencing
Presentations
Using feedback

Passing exams
These tutorials provide guides to the learning skills you
will need to succeed in your university career and also
importantly the skills you’ll use in the workplace.
All of the material is presented in bite-sized chunks and
uses interactive approaches such as videos and question-
led learning activities so that it is easy, and enjoyable
to work your way through. There are also downloadable,
printable summaries of different topics so you can read
offline.
