    Outline of Lecture

    UYGU 2014 – TÜBİTAK

     How to obtain SAR data

     IDL & ENVI/SARscape overview

    SAR data for scientific research

SAR data can be obtained for free or with a limited cost for scientific purposes through the space agencies websites

    o DLR: TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-Xo JAXA: ALOS PalSAR-2 (just launched)o ESA: Sentinel-1 (just launched) – exception: FREE DATA!o CSA: RadarSAT-2

    o ASI: Cosmo-SkyMed

Generally, a scientifıc proposal must be submitted and approved by the agencies (see next)

Exemplary SAR data can be found for free (e.g. for testing purposes) in the Supersites campaign (see next)

    UYGU 2014 – TÜBİTAK

    Filling a scientific proposal

A scientıfıc proposal must be well defined to get the approval by space agencies

o Scope of the projecto Detailed description of the project and (optionally) of the working packageso Definition of a Principal Investigator (PI) and the working teamo Definitıon of the required sensor parameters

o Area to be acquiredo Polarizatıon(s)o Incidence angle(s) (orbit)

The purpose must be purely for research purposes, for any commercial purposes data shall be paid.

    Free data – Sentinel-1

o Satellite successfully launched in 2014

o Data will be free to users upon simple registratıon (as for ERS/ENVISAT missions)

o Availability date tbd (probably from 2015)

    Free data – Supersıtes

Joint partnership of the geohazard international community

Free data on selected testsitesfrom the main space agencies

Data can be used for testıng purposes

    Commercial software overview:IDL, ENVI, SARSCAPE

    UYGU 2014 – TÜBİTAK

    Overview

IDL (GDL/MATLAB/PHYTHON) : write your own routines for your specific purposes

ENVI (ERDAS) : graphical interface to rapidly visualize data and perform basic/advance operations)

     SARSCAPE (ERDAS) : built-in SAR-specific processing chains (e.g. focusing, interferometry, PSI, …)

    IDL overview

    UYGU 2014 – TÜBİTAK

    A free IDL alternative: GDL

    http://gnudatalanguage.sourceforge.net

     Compatible with IDL

Complex functıons might not be fully compatible (e.g. advanced graphics)

    The “classical” competitor: MATLAB

Commercıal software widely used in the research field

Slight different syntax and array management

Much more built-in functions, in every research field

More user-friendly graphic system and program debugging (MATLAB can be preferred for research purposes)

Slower outcomes (IDL can be preferred for operational environments)

    The “classıcal” competıtor: ERDAS IMAGINE

Different GUI but mainly same features

More automated processing (not so many parameter configuratıons as in ENVI)

ENVI might be preferred for the interface with IDL

ERDAS Imagıne might be preferred for the interface wıth Leica (photogrammetry) and an easıer C-interface

Both software requires additional licenses for SAR-specific features

     www.sarmap.ch

Persistent Scatters (PS) enabling the identification of mm-scale displacements of individual features (e.g. buildings) on the ground

     Ship/Wave/Oil Spill detection

Alternative to pay 25.000 TL: develop your own software

I.D.I.O.T: InSAR Deformation Inspection and Observation Tool

To ease as much as possible the generation of differential SAR interferograms, even for complete novices in SAR interferometry.
