    REACTIONARY DEFENSIVE METHODS

The strength o f any fighting system rests on its cond itione d responses. This is because acond itione d response, req uiring no hesita tion for thoug ht, takes less exec ution time than a

choice response. By prog ramm ing the bod y to rea c t to c om bat stimuli with effic ientresponses, the fighting art dramatically increases the likelihood of success in combat.

Rea c tiona ry Defensive Methods train the stud ent in cond itioned responses tha t are flexib leand adaptable to be used against a variety of offensive situations. Reactionary Defensive

Methods are d ivided into five sec tions. These sec tions fully ana lyze a tta cks to p rovide acomprehensive and understandable view in an organized and systematic structure.

Defe nses, ca lled Prac tice Combat Scenarios (PCSs), a re organized within this struc tureaccording to a particula r attack. Roo t Tec hniques and Harmonic Group s simp lify the

stud ent s und erstand ing of PCSs by illustrating the ir rela tionships and interconnec tivity ofmotion.

    ORGANIZATION OF REACTIONARY DEFENSIVE METHODS

Rea c tionary Defensive Metho ds are d ivided according to the fo llow ing five a rea s of study:

    1. Grappling2. Striking

    3. Multiple Attacks4. Offensive-Defe nse

    5. Spec ialized Stud ies

    Grappling

Grappling is defined as any attack that makes directconta c t with the d efend er. These

    attacks include:

    1. Tac kles2. Wrist Grabs

    3. Shoulder/ Lapel Grabs4. Ha ir Grab s

    5. Hand Holds6. Full Nelson Holds

    7. Bear Hugs8. Chokes

    9. Hamm erloc ks10. Headlocks

StrikingStriking is defined as any at tack made prior to c ontac t with the defend er. These a ttac ksinclude:

    1. Pushes

    2. Punc hes3. Kicks

    4. Weap ons

The w ea pons stud y inc ludes mo dern weapons such as:

    1. Stic ks (Blunt Instruments)2. Knives (Edged Wea pons)

    3. Handguns (Firearms)

    Multiple A ttac ks

A Multip le Atta ck is defined as multiple a ttacks by a single o ppo nent or single a ttacks bymultip le opponents. This stud y is designed to ac t a s a transition from the struc tured, pre-planned defenses of the Reactionary Defensive Methods to the unpredictability of

com bat utilizing Strategic Offensive Methods.

    Offensive -Defense

The Offensive-Defense Study introd uces the student to the conc ep t o f using o ffensive

ac tions in a d efensive manner. This d ivision is com prised of:

    1. Rea c tiona ry Offensive-Defense Methods2. Pre-Emp tive At tack Elem ents

Reactionary Offensive-Defense Methods are methods that eliminate the Neutralization

and proc eed imm ed iate ly to a Counter-Strike. This ofte n occurs as the result of a successfulattac k by the opp onent.

Pre-Emp tive At tack Elements are seq uences derived from the Counter-Strike and Follow -

Up sec tions of Prac tice Comb at Scena rios. These ac tions are often used to prevent anassault by the o pp onent beforehis a tta ck is fully deve loped .

Like the Mult ip le Atta ck Division, the Offensive-Defense Division a c ts as a transition to

    Strate gic Offensive Methods.

Spe c ialized StudiesThe Spec ialized Stud ies explore unusua l and unique situations you may one-day fac e. It is

designed to insp ire exp lora tion and e xperimenta tion. The to p ics of stud y inc lude:

    1. One -Arm DefenseSitua tions in which only one hand is able to defend andattack.

    2. No-Arm DefenseSitua tions in which ne ither hand is ab le to defend or atta ck.

    3. Restric tive Spac eSituations in which your mob ility is severely restric ted due tospatial limitations.

    4. Protec ting OthersSitua tions in which you m ust c om e to the a id of a vic tim.

    METHODOLOGY OF ATTACK ANALYSIS

One of the chief a ims of Rea c tiona ry Defensive Methods is to unde rstand the nature andpurpose of an attack. By understanding the nature of a particular attack and its many

assoc ia ted variab les, you w ill have the ne cessary ba ckground informa tion to develop yourow n d efense. This is accom plished by Attack Ana lysis. There a re five steps of Atta ck

    Ana lysis:

    1. Determine the Purpose o f the Atta ck.2. Determine the Nec essary Comp one nts Needed to Successfully Carry Out the

Attack.3. Identify and Define a ll the Va riab les of the Atta ck.

    4. Define a ll Possibilities of the At ta ck.5. Determine the Probab ility and Prac tica lity of these Possibilities.

    EXAMPLE OF AN ATTACK ANALYSIS

    ATTACKWrist Grab

Step 1Determine the Purpo se of the Atta ck.

After ana lyzing the a tta c k, we dete rmine tha t the purpose o f a wrist g rab is three -fold. Thefirst p urpose is to p reve nt the offensive and defensive c apab ilities of the Target. The

sec ond is to c ontrol the m ob ility of the Target , and the third is to p rep are him for jointmanipulation.

Step 2Determine the Nec essary Comp onents.

In order to successfully carry out the purpose of a Wrist Grab Attack, there are threeessentia l elements:

    1. Ma intain a firm hold on the Target s wrist.

    2. Control the movem ent o f the Targe ts arm.3. Control the mo bility of the Targe t s bod y.

Step 3Identify and Define a ll the Variab les of the A tta c k.

    Part A

We beg in b y dete rmining the d irec tion of the a ttack. There a re three po ssib le d irec tions forthis type o f an a ttac k:

    1. Front2. Side3. Rea r

    6/56

Part BNext, we determine the number of wrists and grabbing hands that will be involved in the

atta ck. Since b oth the o ppone nt and the d efender has two a rms, the tota l number ofva riab les is four:

    1. Single g rab to one wrist.

    2. Doub le grabs to one w rist.

    3. Single grab to tw o w rists.4. Doub le grabs to two wrists.

Pa rt CWe now determine the va riab les of the grabb ing hand . There a re tw o p ossibilitiesRegular

    Grip and Irreg ular Grip.

    1. Reg ular Gripthe ha nd is grab b ing in a na tura l position w ith the thumb in anupwa rd position.

    2. Irregular Gripthe ha nd is grab b ing in a n unna tural position with the thumb in ado wnwa rd po sition.

    Part D

Next, we ide ntify the positions of the Target a rm. There are two p ossibilities:

    1. Upwa rd2. Downw ard

    Part E

Fina lly, we e xamine the numb er of possib ilities of interac tion betw een the op ponent s graband the d efend ers a rm. There are two :

    1. Directthe g rab is app lied to the arm d irec tly in front o f the othe r and does not

c ross the Self-Cente rline.2. Crossthe grab is app lied to the arm a c ross the bod y, crossing the Self-

    Centerline.

Step 4Define a ll Possibilities of the Atta ckWe now c om bine all the variables and o rga nize them in a log ical pa ttern to d etermine a llthe possibilities of a tta ck.

Step 5Determine the Probab ility and Prac tica lity of these Possibilities. Now that we have identified all possibilities of the attack, we must eliminate any

redundancies that will inhibit and complicate our training. In addition, we must furtheranalyze o ur informa tion a nd determine those p ositions tha t a re likely to o ccur in c omb at,

those tha t a re unlikely to occur, and those tha t a re p hysica lly impossible. By understand ingthe nature o f an a tta ck and its nec essary components, you c an ea sily identify variab les as

imp ossible, unlikely to oc cur , or ta c tica lly imprac tica l. This is essential in your studybecause it will eliminate unnecessary variables that will distract and hinder your training

ra the r tha n focus and d eve lop your defensive skills. Rem ember, just because som ething ispossibledoes not nec essarily mean tha t it will or can occur.

    Unlikely to Oc cur

A variable that is identified as unlikely to occur is a method that is capable of beingapp lied, but it is unlikely to o cc ur in a com bat situa tion bec ause it is either mec hanica lly

difficult to apply or its application poses a greater risk to the user than the defender. Anexam ple c an b e found in the Doub le Rea r Cross Shoulde r/ Lapel Grab variab le. It is

possibletha t som eo ne m ay grab in this ma nner, but it is highly unlikely.

    Tac tically Imprac tical

A variab le tha t is ide ntified as tac tically imp rac tica l is a method of d efense tha t poses agreate r risk to the defend er than tha t of the o pp onent. An exam ple ca n be found the in

Single Front Cross Shoulder/ Lapel Grab variab le. You can easily defend on the outside ofthe a rm, but if you a ttempt to defend on the inside, you will pa ss the op po nent s weap on

across your Self-Centerline and invoke a renewe d a tta ck.

Note : On the following pag es, we w ill examine the o rganizat iona l out line o f all po ssibilities and d ete rmine those

that are e ssential to reta in for our study. The v ariab les tha t w ill be reta ined a re ind ica ted in bold face type . The

c olumn o n the right explains the rea sons for dete rmining the p roba bility and/ or prac tica lity.

    PRACTICE COMBAT SCENARIOS

Reactionary Defensive Methods combine rudimental striking methods with moderncom bat the ory for the p urpose o f deve loping instinct ive responses. This is accom plished by

tra ining the stud ent in Prac tice Comb at Scena rios. Prac tice Comb at Scena rios ana lyzevarious attacks and illustrate properly constructed defenses. A properly constructed

defense is c omprised of four elem entsNeutra liza tion, Counte r-Strike, Follow -Up, and Exit.

NeutralizationThis is the most c ruc ial part o f any d efense. The Neutraliza tion o f the a tta ckis determined by the opponents offensive actions and the nearest, most effective

defense. This ma y enta il an escape or a reversa l in the c ase o f a g rappling a tta ck or adeflec tion or an eva sion in the case o f a striking atta ck. After the Neutralization, your next

choice of ac tion is based upon the positional rela tionship betw een your nea rest, mosteffective weap on to the nea rest, most effec tive ta rge t.

Counter-StrikeCounte r-Strikes are single or multip le strikes oc curring a fte r or simulta neouswith the Neutralization for the purpose of preventing a renewed attack by the opponent.

Regardless of how skilled you may be in blocking or escaping, the more opportunities theopponent has to strike, the greater the probability his attack will be successful. In addition

to p reventing renewed at tacks, Counter-Strikes ena b le one to turn the ta b les and ga in thepsycho log ical a dvanta ge . A Counter-Strike a lone will not win the b attle. The o pp onent

must be incapa c ita ted in order to estab lish a m ea ns of escape.

Follow-Up Strikes Follow -Up Strikes are punishing b lows designed to control andincapac ita te the op ponent in order to safe ly exit the c onfronta tion. The type, number, and

deg ree of Follow -Up Strikes are d ete rmined by the threat the op ponent poses, the deg reeof c ontrol you ha ve over the op ponent, and if a sa fe escape is possib le.

ExitOnc e the op ponent has been c ontrolled and sa fety is ensured , the defend er is now

able to exit the a rea . Once a wa y, there ma y be c ivil and mo ra l responsib ilities incurred bythe defender. Althoug h not exp lic itly desc ribed in the PCSs, most Exits a re e xec uted by

means of a Single or Doub le Coverout. For more information on Co verouts, refer toStrategic Offensive Metho dsThe Arsenal of Natural Offensive Weaponry.

    THE INTERCONNECTIVITY OF MOTION

Many Martial Arts schools attempt to teach students a defense for every type of attack. But combat is a changing and unpredictable environment; it is impossible to know in

advanc e wha t the a tta c k will be and whe n it will occ ur. There a re some scho ols thatacknowledg e this p rob lem and a ttempt to solve it by instruc ting the stude nts to c hoose a

hand ful of tec hniques and adapt them for use in multiple situations. Unfortuna tely for thestudents, these schools do not provide the correct instruction and training, nor do they

rea lize tha t numerous tec hniques have a neg ative effec t on Rea c tion Time. These studentsare left w ith noth ing excep t the illusion of skill and the fanta sy of ma rtial arts.

    CHOICES AND REACTION TIME

Most martia l artists fail to und erstand tha t the more c hoices you a re g iven the long er it w ill

take you to rea c t a nd respond to the a ttac k. A resea rcher in the 1950s (Hick) found tha t as the number of response o ption (tec hniques) inc rea ses from one to two, Rea c tion Timeincrea ses by 58%. This late r led to the deve lopme nt o f what is now known as Hicks Law of

Rea c tion/ Response Time. This law sta tes Reac tion Time increases significantly when onemust d ec ide w hich response o r tec hnique is mo st a pprop riate for the threa t. For exam ple,

in 1993 a resea rcher (Ferrara) tested Hicks Law a nd found tha t the Rea c tion Time o f asingle block to a punch was .183 milliseconds. When four different blocks were given as

op tions, the Rea c tion Time inc rea sed to .481 millisec onds. The mo re c hoices you ha ve tocounter a threat, the longer it takes you to respond. Most Martial Art schools have at least

30 defenses aga inst a punch. If Hick found tha t going from one to tw o c hoices inc rea sesRea c tion Time by 58%, ima gine w hat happens whe n you ha ve 30 or mo re c hoice s!

    PRACTICE COMBAT SCENARIOS

The IMPCTT designe d the Elite Fighter System o f Mo dern Co mbat to train the stud ent for

the reality of street combat by combining scientific research and the most advancedtac tic s of mod ern comb at. One p art of the student s ove ra ll tra ining is lea rning to respond

instinc tively and to suc c essfully de fend aga inst an unexpec ted a tta ck. This isaccomplished in the Reactionary Defensive Methods by training the student in Practice

Comb at Scena rios (PCSs). Prac tice Combat Scena rios are d esigned to:

    1. Ana lyze c om mo n attacks and illustra te p rop erly construc ted defenses.2. Introd uce and a pp ly principles of comba t.

    3. Tra in the bod y to respond instinct ively to unexpe c ted a tta cks.4. Develop tota l bo dy c oordination.

    5. Integra te c om ponents for skill eva luation .

Prac tice Com bat Scena rios are b ased upon the conc ep ts of Roo t Tec hniques andHarmo nic Group s. These two method s simplify one s choice o f de fense a nd imp rove

rea c tion time during the norma l stressors of a com bat situation.

INDIRECT MODIFICATIONInd irec t Mo difica tions are m ore a dvanc ed me thods ofmo difying defense. There are three types of Indirec t Mod ifica tionsSeq uenc e Reversal,

Motion Alteration, and Thema tic Adap tation.

    1. Sequenc e Reversa lThe seq uenc e o f strikes is reversed befo re it is applied aga inst theop ponent. For example:

ATTACKING CRANE (PRT) is reve rsed to c reate CLASHING STORMS (SRT).

    2. Mo tion Alterat ionThe p lane o f motion in which the strikes are d elivered are move d to

anothe r p lanehorizonta l strikes to vertica l strikes, diagona l strikes to horizonta l, etc . Forexample:

HUGGING ELBOWS (PRT) is a ltered to c reate STRIKING VIPER (SRT).

    3. Thematic Ad apta tionThe theme of the PRT is p reserved while new mo vem ents are

c rea ted to respond to the threa t. For example, if the theme of the PRT is a lterna tingha nd strikes with in-place stanc e p ivots , then the SRT ma y be b ased upon this theme

and new movements/ strikes c rea ted . For examp le:

CRASHING RAM (PRT) is adapted to become SPINNING VENGEANCE (SRT).

    Tertiary Roo t Tec hniques

Tertiary Root Techniques (TRTs) are varia tions of Second ary Root Techniques or defenses

based upon SRTs. These va ria tions may be c reated in the same manner as SRTs.

    THE FORMULATION OF DEFENSES

Prac tice Co mb at Scena rios are not mea nt to be the final answe rs to a particular a ttack, but the foundation upon which new responses may be developed. One method of

altering self-defense techniques, designed by Ed Parker, is known as the FormulationEqua tion. This concep t sta tes tha t for any self-de fense technique, or seq uenc e o f moves,

    one can:

    1. PrefixAd d a move or moves before it.2. SuffixAd d a move or moves a fter it.3. InsertAdd a move or moves within the seq uence or ad d a move simultaneo us

with anothe r.4. Re-arrangeChange the orde r of the seq uenc e of moves.

    5. AlterChang e the weap on, target, or bo th.6. AdjustChange the rang e, ang le o f exec ution, or both.

    7. RegulateReg ula te the speed, force, or both. One m ay even reg ula te theintent and spe ed o f an ac tion.

    8. DeleteExc lude a mo ve o r mo ves within a seq uenc e.

When prac ticing and designing self-de fense techniques, do no t ma ke the mistake of mo stMa rtial Artists and foc us on the theo retica l a t the expe nse o f ac tua l training. These

Armchair Martial Artists compensate for their lack of ability with excessive debate andfrequent criticism. Remember, combat is a fluctuating and unpredictable environment.

Only throug h de d ica ted study and prac tice w ill one be successful.

    HARMONIC GROUPS

A Harmo nic Group is a c ollec tion of PCSs orga nized under a p articular atta ck variab le fo rthe purpose of examining and exposing the student to various defensive possibilities.

Group Harmonics simplify defensive actions by allowing the student to see theinterconnec tivity of motion. This me thod dem onstra tes tha t one does not ne ed to lea rn

250 de fenses for 250 diffe rent a ttacks. One simply lea rns 24 defenses and adapts them tofit any d efensive need . This grea tly red uc es Rea c tion/ Response Time a nd improve s one s

    HARMONICS

The d efenses within a Group relate to o thers within the same group (and other group s) by

    CHARACTERISTICS OF G ROUPS

Som e Harmonic G roup s conta in unique charac teristics such a s pairs of tec hniques and

singular tec hnique s. These a re kno wn as Tec hnique Pa irs and Isola ted Defe nses.

    Tec hnique Pairs

Many Harmonic Groups contain technique pairs. If there is a pair of techniques one
