INTRODUCTION TO ICT IN

LANGUAGE LEARNING

Page 2: INTRODUCTION TO ICT IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Using ICT in supporting Language Learning is

necessity, not only to improve the effectiveness and

quality of education, but more importantly to enhance

the ICT literacy for teacher and students as their life

skill in the era of rapidly changing and progressing

technology. (Hartoyo, 2009)

There is no a universally accepted

definition of ICT as its concepts,

methods, and applications constantly

develop and change from time to

time. But ICT is an abbreviation which

stands for Information and

Communication Technology.

“Information means the processed data in a meaningful and purposeful form.” (Shore 1988:22)

In language learning: acquire, transmit, and exchange to get benefit of it.

“Interaction process between communicator and communicant [interlocutor].” Levis (1996:6)

“Learning how to communicate in

one or many languages through

receiving, transmitting and sharing

information.” Skortu (2002)

“Communication involves the transfer between people of

information including ideas, emotions, knowledge and skills.” Hubbley(1993:45)

Technology derived from the word ‘techno’ which

means technique, art or skill, and ‘logos’ which means

science. Therefore, technology can be defined as a

scientific knowledge of art or skill.

Page 7: INTRODUCTION TO ICT IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

ICT includes a broad range of digital technologies

mostly of electronic information-processing

technologies: computers and internet, fixed-line

telecommunications, mobile phones and other wireless

communications, networks and so on.

ICT IN EDUCATION

ICT may be defined as technology functioning to support the process of conveying information and communication

especially in education areas.

Page 10: INTRODUCTION TO ICT IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

Exposure to ‘authentic’ language;

Access to wider sources of information and varieties of language;

Opportunities to communicate with outside world;

A learner-centered approach;

Development of learner autonomy.

The application of ICT

in education

especially language

learning is inevitable.

It is beneficial as

explained by

Herington (2002) that

technology facilities:

Hypertext

Means non-sequential

reading and writing. A

hypertext system allows a

user to link information

together, thereby creating

trails through associated

materials. A link connect

words or sentences in one

electronic document to

relate information in another

document. (Karent, 1988)

"Hypermedia is defined by the presence of

application control information embedded

within, or as a layer above, the

presentation of information. Distributed

hypermedia allows the presentation and

control information to be stored at remote

locations.”

Multimedia

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. This contrasts with media that

use only rudimentary computer displays such as text-only or traditional forms of

printed or hand-produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation,

video, and interactivity content forms.

The utilization of ICT in general context

comprises the use of computer and programs

such as word processing,
