    The ELECTRONIC SORTING

Electronic sorting is the automated process of sorting solid products using

    cameras.

Depending on the types of sensors used and the software-driven intelligence of

the image processing system, optical sorters can recognize objects’ color,

    size, shape, and structural properties.

The sorter compares objects to user-defined accept/reject criteria to

identify and remove defective products and foreign material from the

production line, or to separate product of different grades or types of

    materials.

Compared to manual sorting, being subjective and inconsistent, optical sorting

helps improve product quality, maximize throughput and increase yields

    while reducing labor costs.

    BRATNE

  • ELECTRONIC SORTING | | | |8/11/2016 TRAINING ON ELECTRONIC SORTING 9

    The Electronic Sorting

Electronic Sorters feature four major components:

    1. The feed system is to spread product into a uniform monolayer so products

are presented to the optical system evenly, without clumps, at a constant

    velocity.

    2. The optical system includes lights and sensors housed below the flow of

    the objects being inspected.

    3. The image processing system compares objects to user-defined

accept/reject thresholds to classify objects and actuate the separation

    system.

    4. The separation system, using compressed air pinpoints objects while in-air

and deflects the objects to remove into a reject bin while good product

    continues along its normal trajectory.

The ideal sorter depends on the application, with the

product’s characteristics and the user’s objectives

determining the ideal sensors, software-driven capabilities

    and mechanical platform.

    Feed System

    SEA sorters are equipped with

    small-sized standard hopper

    An additional adequately sized

    hopper must be installed, always

    for proper operation.

    The throughput is controlled by

    the program, which operates

    according to the level sensors

fixed in the additional hopper for

low, med and high level control.

    Standard SEA sorters chute (60°)

has one side smooth and one

    side with 54 channels (5mm

    large each).

    ties (eg: chickpeas)

    The Illumination & Sensors

    Optical sorters require a compatible

combination of light and sensors to

    illuminate objects and capture images

before the images can be processed

    and accept/reject decision is made.

    SEA sorters may have:

    Commercial neon lamps (SEA-PIXEL),

    Custom RGB LED (SEA-NEXT),

    Custom white LED (SEA-CHROME

    and SEA-NEXT) lighting systems.

    BRATNE

  • ELECTRONIC SORTING | | | |8/11/2016 TRAINING ON ELECTRONIC SORTING 15

    The Illumination & Sensors

Lights, cameras, and sensors can be

designed to work within visible light

wavelengths as well as the near-

    infrared(NIR) infrared(IR) and

    ultraviolet (UV) spectrums.

    The optimal wavelengths for each

    application maximize the contrast

    between the objects to be

    separated. SEA LED LIFE:

    100,000 h. minimum. Standard 150,000 h.

    Based on proper electrical suppply

The visible spectrum is the portion

    of the electromagnetic spectrum

that is visible to the human eye.

    Human eye responds to wavelengths

    from about 380 to 750nm.

CIMBRIA Srl designs and makes use

    of high resolution custom CCD

    Cameras and multiple optical

    systems with high-tech objectives,

    exclusive designed electronic and

    software to collect, receive and

    elaborate the images.

Beside the color sensors, NIR &

    InGaAs CCD systems(or combination

of both) are used on SEA-NEXT and

    SEA-CHROME sorters

The InGaAs (gallium indium arsenide) is

a common name for a family of

    chemical compounds of three

    chemical elements indium, gallium,

    and arsenic

    In electronic sorting, the InGaAs

alloy is used to indicate the Image

    Software Driven Intelligence

Once the sensors capture the object’s response to the energy source, image

processing takes over to manipulate the data to extract and categorize

    information of specific features.

The user sets the accept/reject thresholds by the definitions of good and

bad flow. The art and science of image processing lies in developing

algorithms that maximize the effectiveness of the sorter while presenting

a simple user-interface to the operator.

New software-driven capabilities are constantly being developed to address the

    specific needs of various applications.

    SEA sorters can recognize each

    object’s color, size and shape

as well as the color, size, shape

and location of a defect on a

    product.
