INTRODUCTION

What follows is not an annual. At least not in the traditional sense of what a school yearbook should be . Contained in the succeeding pages, quite simply, are a few thoughts. A few ideas. A few considerations and a few n3flections about what the past year at Southwestern has been like . And what it hasn't been like.

What follows is not an annual. This fact will readily present itself. There are no "mug shots" of classmates covering page after page. No fraternity or sorority pictures. No "Lynx Lovelies", no faculty photographs and no resumes of sporting events. And, unfortunately, not everyone on campus is present. Flipping through it, you might be impressed with what seems to be a casual assortment of photographs running through a rather small number of pages. Nothing but pictures. Faces. Places. And not very many of them, either.

What follows is not an annual. When, in October, Bill and I applied for joint editorship of THE LYNX, we stated that we wanted to put together something that might describe a year of life at Southwestern. The people. The seasons. The moods. How they c,hange, and how they stay the same, Originally, we had plans of including a photograph of everyone . involved with this school, composed by that person, Plans change. A staff of fourteen photographers dwindled to two. The idea was met with overwhelming disinterest: three separate meetings were scheduled and announced for public discussion of the annual , with absolutely no one coming to two of them. Plans change. Sometimes they have to. We realized that it would be virtually impossible for the two of us to try something that ambitious. Instead, we continued with our basic idea, and amended the structure of what we had proposed. _ What follows is not an annual. But in a very real sense, it is,

Please allow me to make a gentle suggestion: each photograph is numbered, Each photograph has a specific place in this composition and gains much of its importance from that place. In other words, this book is designed to be read as well as examined. First page · to last. Granted, it is not easy reading, owing chiefly to the fact that its authors are barely literate. But there are symbols to be found , Themes to be followed. Relationships to be established. Each style, each technique, each presentation attempts to contribute something to the whole, Many pictures, undoubtedly, will go unnoticed or be misunderstood, But then I am not allowed to give you a key, The photographs must speak for themselves. And I must stop writing.
