INTRODUCTION

researching practice in their own school and in other schools, inside and outside the region. Increasingly, hubs are working together to develop, facilitate and evaluate programmes.

Welsh Medium Programmes You will find a number of Welsh medium hub-based programmes in this prospectus covering professional learning and curriculum development needs. In addition, the nine Welsh medium secondary schools in the central south Wales region have come together to offer professional learning and curriculum programmes in a ‘distributed hub’ model. The model was developed by the schools and funded by the Consortium. The programmes offered are based on sector and regional development needs; some are applicable across phase. 150+ practitioners accessed the programmes in 2016/17. This year the region will be piloting a similar model with a group of primary schools. Details and registration details for these programmes are available here: http://gydangilydd.pbworks.com. The range of programmes includes e.g. provision for NQTs, leadership development, curriculum expertise, strategies for effective engagement with families, mindfulness training and ALN, as well as conversion training for non-specialists.

We know that teachers are our biggest asset and, as a region, are looking to provide guidance, support, coaching and mentoring at the point of need. We want to foster leadership potential and facilitate learning for our future leaders. Therefore this professional learning offer reflects the professional learning continuum and an increasing number of curriculum areas.

We will continue to update the regional offer so that we can be responsive to the needs of schools and practitioners. All bookings and further information can be found on Cronfa: www.cscjes-cronfa.co.uk or by contacting [email protected].

Mike Glavin Managing Director, Central South Consortium

Central South Consortium is delighted to present the regional professional learning offer in partnership with over forty schools in the region that are facilitating programmes as either a professional learning hub, a curriculum hub or as a lead practitioner.

This offer exemplifies the increasingly school led system of support which further develops and expands the Central South Wales Challenge philosophy of building capacity within schools to support each other. This professional learning offer is by no means exhaustive as it does not list the school-to-school opportunities that many schools offer and participate in as part of a SIG, Pathfinder and other arrangements.

INTRODUCTION

What Do Hubs Do?Professional learning hubs will offer development opportunities on the professional learning continuum. Curriculum hubs will support the development of subject specific approaches in core subjects, while lead practitioners will focus on the development of approaches and resources in non-core subject areas.

Hubs:

» Provide high quality professional learning for schools in the region

» Develop school to school practice sharing » Support school improvement » Build capacity in leadership » Undertake and share research

Why Enquiry Led Programmes? Many professional learning programmes follow an enquiry led approach. This is in recognition of a school’s need for professional development to align with improvement priorities and be able to evidence impact. CSC programme facilitators will work with practitioners over a number of sessions to set an enquiry, research ‘what works’, develop, implement and evaluate an action plan.

Practitioners can expect to develop a collaborative network with others on the programme and will usually be required to complete tasks between sessions and participate in discussion around the outcomes of these tasks. Practitioners will make an evaluation of how the programme has impacted on outcomes and practice in their school.

School uses self evaluation to identify priorities in improvement plan and uses

Cronfa to register practitioner/s for programmes in areas of need.

Pre-programme activity for example, links to key pieces of research, case studies,

guidance documentation and other relevant information.

Introductory sessionReviewing the research.

Setting lines of enquiry in relation to identified area for development.

Setting impact criteria.

Practitioner research and in-school coaching for implementation from the Hub

Taking a baseline measure.Trialling strategies, collecting evidence.

Review sessionWhat has happened so far?

What has worked? What needs to change further?

Practitioner research and in-school coaching for implementation from the hub

Adapting strategies based on outcomes of review.

Tracking progress against baseline measure.

Evaluation sessionReporting on outcomes. Determining next steps.

Facilitator collates individual reports and provides an overview to CSC as part of the

termly reporting.

School evaluates the impact of the programme on provision/pupil outcomes

and plans appropriate next steps.

The leadership development offer in central south Wales is designed to meet three principal objectives:

» To develop the next generation of headteachers and ensure that they are well prepared for the crucial role of headship and are offered a sustained professional development programme to support them into post

» Develop further the skills, expertise and knowledge of the region’s existing cadre of successful leaders to enable them offer wider system leadership as we move towards a school-led system, and new school organisation models such as federations

» Provide a coherent development pathway along the professional learning pathway from ITE to executive headteacher

In addition to the free hub-based leadership models detailed in this prospectus, the Central South Consortium has commissioned a series of programmes in partnership with other providers. Programmes include:

The Aspiring Headteacher ProgrammeThis programme supports aspiring headteachers who are aiming to gain a headship in the next 18 months. LEADERSHIP

Peer EnquiryThis is a developmental leadership model where trained headteachers conduct an ‘enquiry’ in a colleague school, looking at practices, learning and teaching, data and processes to identify strengths and areas for development. Almost a quarter of central south Wales schools have now been involved in peer enquiry. External evaluation and practitioner feedback has been extremely positive. Characteristics of peer enquiry:

» Hosting a Peer Enquiry is free » Leading a Peer Enquiry generates £1250 for

your school » It is not an inspection » It is a rigorous and robust process » The enquiry process is run by headteachers

for headteachers » Professional benefits are proving to be

reciprocal and sustained » It boosts self-evaluation and school

improvement planning » Schools working with practitioners from

schools outside their Local Authority and School Improvement Groups develop wider networks of collaboration.

» New partnerships have resulted in innovative practice sharing and teacher development opportunities

If you would like to lead or host a peer enquiry, please contact Alison Tovey ([email protected]).

Executive HeadshipThis is a six full day programme to prepare headteachers to lead in a multi-school environment. Aspects of the programme include:

Aspiring Future Middle LeadersThis programme seeks to provide an insight and experience of challenges faced by middle leaders in schools. Interactive sessions will cover aspects of learning and teaching, systems of accountability, data and assessment, achievement and wellbeing and pastoral roles.

The programme is developed to provide similar interactive approaches and key foci on developing the skills of the workforce to that of the ASPIRE NQT and OTP programmes. Each session will outline a different aspect of leadership at middle management level with opportunity for practitioners to collaborate and explore ideas. Each session will be supported by facilitation of discussion and ‘takeaway materials’ which may be used in the classroom, department, wider school or at interview.

Practitioners will be required to set up and undertake an action research/ enquiry project on an area of their choice, in their own school in order to develop skills covered and provide meaningful evaluation of current practice in schools. They will be required to present a 10-15 minute outline to the cohort in the last session and a brief written report.

Thinking About ‘Thinking Hats’Developing ambitious and capable learners is one of the four core purposes of Donaldson’s Successful Futures. This programme provides one proven strategy that develops learning skills whilst increasing independence and enjoyment and also developing creativity.

Practitioners will see first-hand evidence in class and in books of how the use of ‘Thinking Hats’ across the entire curriculum develops highly effective and transferable learning skills that boost all learners’ enjoyment and self-confidence.

Practitioners will see many practical applications of ‘Thinking Hats’. They will consider how these can be used by pupils to both scaffold and extend thinking and ‘communicate, explore and explain concepts and ideas’.

The visual approach of the Thinking Hats has a big impact on all groups of learners, regardless of age and ability. It is appropriate for schools that are looking for approaches that:

» Improve and enrich learners’ learning and thinking skills

» Strengthen peer and self-assessment strategies

» Help learners better organise and present their ideas

Giving Pupils A Voice In The Foundation Phase CurriculumThe ‘Busy Bee’ approach is an innovative way of developing ‘ambitious, capable learners’ from the Foundation Phase up. It is a strategy that has a positive impact leading to improved levels of wellbeing, and increased autonomy and engagement in learning.

Practitioners will see how empowering younger learners gives them ownership their own ‘enhanced provision’. This approach has already been successfully shared with other schools through the Hub network who have since adopted it in their own settings to positive effect.

Practitioners will have the opportunity to: observe first-hand practice in the Foundation Phase; talk to children about their curriculum planning roles and responsibilities and then plan and implement a similar strategy in their own classrooms as part of a small scale action research project.

The introductory session will include a helpful ‘take-away’ resource pack to get practitioners started (including ‘Busy Bee’ charts & stickers etc., and examples of planning documents). Practitioners will then have the opportunity to try ideas in their own settings and feedback in subsequent sessions leading to a presentation of the project outcomes in their own setting.
