general information about pressure gaugesOptimum safety results from the careful planning, selection and installation of the gauge to be used in apressurized system. The user should inform the manufacturer of all conditions pertinent to theapplication and environment so the chosen specifications can be verified. The chosen materials are alwaysthe responsibility of the customer, Badotherm can only advise based on knowledge and 50 years ofexperience.Mechanical pressure gauges are produced with bourdon tubes, diaphragms, bellows and capsules and areaccordingly different. The measuring instruments are made of copper alloy, alloyed steel or produced inspecial materials for specific measuring applications. The pressure sensing element in most gauges is subjected to high internal stress. To bring this stress downto acceptable levels it is necessary to combine the instruments with pressure regulators, chemical seals, pulsation dampeners, snubbers, siphons, manifolds, valves and other similar equipment. The potentialhazard increases at higher operating pressures, so safety is of paramount importance.

gauges with liquid fillingMany of the Badotherm pressure gauge series have the option of being liquid filled, to decidewhether you need a liquid filling consider the below following details. In the field, manypressure gauges are exposed to vibration and / or shocks, sometimes transmitted by theprocess fluid or by the way the gauge is mounted.

A consequence of this condition is that the moving parts and also the pointer will vibrate andthe actual reading will be impossible. High wear shortens the life cycle of the instrument dras-tically. Pulsations coming from the process fluid could be dampened by restrictors (referred toas check-screws or throttle-screws) or valves, but this only applies for clean process fluid. Therestrictor has a small hole that easily can be clogged and can cause incorrect reading, thisagain can lead to dangerous situations and may lead to accidents caused by wrong operationdecisions. In these cases liquid filling can protect the internal measuring system.

Dampening of vibration by reducing friction depends on the velocity of the moving parts(movement, tube and pointer) in the liquid. In the case of fast changing values, the averagepressure will be indicated.

The friction depends again on the viscosity of the liquid in addition to the velocity of themoving part. As the viscosities of liquids are temperature dependent, a series of standard fillingliquids can be used to suit the various thermal operating conditions.

If a chemical reaction of the process fluid with the liquid filling is possible in the event of aleakage in the system, fluorinated liquids should be used (fluorolube). For example oxygenwith glycerine will cause an explosion so an alternative fluid must be used.

The small temperature dependence of silicone oils makes this oil perfect as filling fluid in placeswhere there are extreme climatic (cold) circumstances. In these cases the liquid filling will

protect against the possible freezing of the moving parts and operating reliability is secured, even under extreme conditions. Also it will protect the internals from corrosive attack.

With liquid filling, the instrument must be sealed during transport but after installation it mustbe vented because pressure measuring instruments with tube systems require the atmosphereas a reference. Often this fact is forgotten with the consequence of a reading error.

The entry of aggressive ambient matter cannot be entirely excluded, and water condensatemay mix with filling liquid or when not filled collect at the bottom of the casing. To avoid these aspects a hermetically closed instrument is required with a compensatingmembrane built in such as the BDT20 series.

liquid filling of Badotherm gauges gives the following advantages

Increases dramatically the lifetime of the gauge under high dynamic operating conditions

Produces a steady reading when vibrations and pulsations occur

Avoids the entry of aggressive environment

Avoids the formation of water condensate

    Increase general operational safety

    Avoids misting of windows

Badotherm gauges are repairable in 63/80/100/160 mm (bayonet casings)

Available with contact switches and isolation filling oil (BDT30)

    High quality, price competitive worldwide

testing referred to EN837When a gauge is tested for accuracy and hysteresis, test instruments with an accuracy of at least4 times greater than the accuracy of the instrument to be tested, shall be required. The test instrument shall be traceable to national or international standards.

The test shall be made by rising and falling pressure. The number of test points shall be evenly dis-

tributed on the entire scale. The maximum scale value is a test point and the zero (free zero only)is a test point. - classes 0.1% up to 0.6% a minimum of 10 points.

    - classes 1% up to 2.5% a minimum of 5 points.

Standard gauges may be pressurized for maximum 12 hours, to the full maximum scale value. An over pressure is allowed for 15 minutes. Cyclic pressure testing may fluctuate between 30%and 60% of the maximum scale value with a frequency of 20 to 60 cycles per minute.

pressure connectionsThe position of the connection can be specified per order, normal for bottom connection is6 oclock. Thread forms and sizes are shown in table below. The different threads are parallel withsymbol G or BSP, tapered thread with symbol NPT. Other threads such as BSPT, SAE, metric areavailable on request. The connection can be made from square, hexagon or round with flats.

    parallel pipe threadG 1/8(28)G 1/4(19)G 3/8(19)G 1/2(14)

With parallel threads the pressure seal is made on the sealing face with a spigot using a washerthat is compatible to pressure medium.

    tapered thread1/8 NPT (27)1/4 NPT (18)3/8 NPT (18)1/2 NPT (14)

With NPT threads the pressure seal is normally made by the fitting of the thread ( metal to metal)by using special never seize paste or PTFE tape on the male thread before assembly, the jointingmaterial should be compatible with the process fluid.

    warning labels

All pressure gauges sealed for the purpose of liquid filling have a device to assure atmosphericcompensation. A label glued to the case shows how to open after installation. Make sure this willbe done because if this device is not opened severe personal damage may be caused whenoperating. For all standard pressure gauges an adhesive sticker is available that can be fixed on thecase with the following warning; Severe personal injury or damage may be caused by pressurebeyond the top of the scale, excessive vibration or pressure pulsation, excessive instrumenttemperature, corrosion of the pressure containing parts, or other misuse. Refer to ASME B40.1.

liabilityBadotherm shall not be liable for any damage or loss, caused to or by the item delivered as a

consequence of whatever event, unless and to the extent that any statuary provision or obligatoryforce holds Badotherm liable.

    installation manual

do not tighten by grasping the case of the gauge as this may cause damage

Before installing a pressure gauge, consideration should be given to temperature, humidity, vibration, pulsation, shock and other climatic and ambient conditions of the service application, and also to the possible need for protective attachments and / or special installation requirements.Consult ASME B40.1 1991 and NEN-EN837 to avoid misuse.

The user shall ensure that the correct gauge has been selected with the correct range, constructionand materials.

When a gauge incorporates a blow out device or blow out back, a minimum distance of 20 mmfrom any obstacle shall be ensured.

When tightening direct mounting gauges ( type A or D ) one should only use the correct spanneron the connection, this will avoid damage to the case and incorrect reading of the pressure range.

safety regulationsWith respect to the use of pressure gauges, the cause of failure is usually misuse or misapplication.

The following applications are considered potentially hazardous and must be carefully evaluated.Compressed gas systemsOxygen systemsSystems containing hydrogen or free hydrogen atomsCorrosive fluid systemsPressure systems containing any explosive or flammable mixture of mediumSteam systemsSystems in which the interchangeability of gauges could result in hazardousinternal contamination.Systems installed in hazardous environmentHydrogen embrittlement contamination from a compressed gasFormation of acetyleneWeakening of soft solder joints by steam or other heat sourcesCorrosionFatigue or mechanical shocksExcessive vibrations

Badotherm contact devices for pressure and temperature gaugesapplicationsBadotherm contacts are used on diameter 100/160 mm. The contacts are available in single, double and triple versions and can be built under or on to the dial. The nominal value can be set from the outside covering the full scale and the switchingdirection is clockwise.

technical specification contact devicesS-type: low-action contactsLow action contacts are suitable for use when there is no high contact loads and vibration. These contacts are not suitable for use in heavy duty operation, aggressive environment and oilfilled gauges. A pulse controlled protection relay is recommended to secure a long working life(MSR series).

M-type: magnet-action contactsThese contacts can be used in almost all operating conditions and are usually not affected by

vibration. A pulse controlled contact relay is recommended.

E-type: electronic contactsElectronic contacts are equipped with a 3-wire non-touching proximity switch PNP (polaritysafe) these contacts can be used for the direct control of an SPS or other electronic controlfeatures. E contacts may not be used in Ex-zones. An isolating amplifier is not necessary.

I-type: inductive contactsInductive contacts are equipped with non-touching proximity switches , due to a contact freeoperation the switching accuracy and long life service makes this contact suitable for any indus-

trial application. When used together with isolating amplifier WE77/Ex the set complies withprotection type I (intrinsic safety), classified as EEx ib IIC T6 and is homologated for zones 1 and2. Connection diagram is shown on page 36.

    low action contacts

Low-action type contacts can be used where high contact loads are not required and wherevibration does not occur. They cannot be used in potentially explosive areas due to sparking orwhere oxidation of the contact components due to an aggressive atmosphere can occur. In the

table below only single and double contacts are shown, but the contact devices are alsoavailable as triple or quadruple types. The functions are given considering the pointer moves ina clockwise direction so that the pointer passes the set point (break or make contact).

    magnetic contacts

Magnetic type contacts can be used under virtually all conditions, they are largely insensitive tovibration. The contact pin holder of the setting pointer is fitted with an adjustable magnetwhich attracts the contact arm just before the preset level is reached. This avoids arcing andscorching of the contact pin.

    inductive contacts

Inductive contacts are non-contacting operating electrical switching elements.Basically the contact system consists of a pair of coils energised in a transistorized oscillatorwhose RF magnetic field is influenced by a metal control tab. This influence effects a change in

the amplitude of oscillation of the oscillator which communicates to a succeeding amplifier.By means of the amplifier a relay is controlled which releases the actual switching process. The advantage of this contact is that the systems can be used in rooms where there is anexplosive hazard up to classification (Ex) I G5; in addition they are wear resistant due to lack ofmechanical contact and therefore need no maintenance. In the table below only single and double contacts are shown, but the contact devices are alsoavailable as triple or quadruple types. The functions are given considering the pointer moves ina clockwise direction so that the pointer passes the set point (break or make contact).

    electronic contacts

Electronic contacts can be used in almost all industrial applications. Due to their switchingaccuracy (proximity type) these contacts are suitable for precision measuring instruments (alsofor liquid filled and low pressure instruments). Compared with inductive contacts this system ismore cost effective because it does not need an amplifier.Electronic contacts with a PNP output are particularly suitable for switching small DC loads(10-30 V DC, under 100 mA), for instance PLC signal inputs. In the table below only single and double contacts are shown, but the contact devices are alsoavailable as triple or quadruple types. The functions are given considering the pointer moves ina clockwise direction so that the pointer passes the set point (break or make contact).

With a PNP switching unit, the switched output (U) is a connection towards "+" (brown). The load (R) between (U) and the connection towards "-"(blue) should be selected in a way notto exceed the maximum switching current (100 mA).

No direct connection between (U) and "-"

load table for limit value switchesThe basic condition for safe switching is the clean electrically conductive surface of the contactpins. Technical details as under are valid for low-action contacts (without magnet) and forsnap-action contacts (with magnet).

For a filled gauge with contacts the contact load is approx 30% less.

To guarantee maximum switching safety, to avoid switching interruptions and to increase theswitching power, we recommend the protection of MSR series relays.

The service life of the contact devices is considerably increased, because the contacts open andclose under no voltage in 99% of cases.A switching amplifier should be used in all oil filled measuring instruments.

multi functional relay type MSR for low-action and magnetic contactsIf properly used, electrical mechanical limit value switches (contact devices) guarantee safeswitching and a long service life. The following should be observed when these contacts are being used.

The switching capacity is limited by the size of the element and by the adjusting forces bearingon the contact arms available for the respective instrument pointers (actual value pointer).Higher transitional resistances may be caused by exterior effects such as pollution,an aggressive atmosphere, oxidation or the like, and these may jeopardize the switching safety.Contact chattering or bouncing may occur through very low contact forces (pressure of thecontact pins) and may cause undesired switching operations which may limit the service life ofthe limit value switches and may even release uncontrolled switching operations.Switching of loads may produce a switching spark. In oil filled gauges these sparks willdisintegrate the oil and turn it cloudy. In addition, the contact surfaces may carbonize. These impurities as well as the oil itself form an isolating layer on the contact surfaces whichagain cause faulty switching operations.

    relay function

The pulse controlled multifunctional relays of the MSR series have been developed for the specialpurpose of solving the above mentioned problems. The following solutions have been established.

Almost load-free switching of the contact by pulse control signals in the ratio 1:100.Overcoming resistive layers by pulse voltages up to 40 V at a rising speed of typical 120 V/sec.Reduction of controllable wrong switching operations of the contact caused by shatters orother vibrations of same, by the introduction of a fall delay time of 0.4 seconds(changes are possible upon request)Increase of the switching performance of the contact by a posterior relay provided with a

    potential free changer.

    models available

MSR-10 this is a monostable execution for the connection of a single contactsuch as S-1 / M-2 or S-2 / M-2.MSR-20 this is a monostable execution for the connection of one double or two single contactssuch as S-1 / M-2 to S-22 / M-22.MSR-11 this is a bistable execution for connection of a double (interval operation)such as S-21 and M21.

With this execution, the switching condition of one contact is memorized temporarilyuntil the other contact is operated (no permanent storage).

All the above mentioned executions are also available with the following supply voltages;230 V AC, 115 V AC, 24 V AC, 24 V DC.
