Introduction: Identification Signs

All Corps projects and facilities areidentified with a Standard Identificationsign. The graphic format has beenstandardized for use at all locations. TheStandard Identification sign is intendedfor use along public access routes andincorporates the Corps Signature on thesign panel. It is designed to provideclear and consistent identification of theCorps at each location. The format ofthis design accommodates a variety oflegends used to identify the many typesof facilities. The different legends andtheir applications are shown in thissection. The designs use a standardgrid, shown on pages 5-12 to 5-14, forreproduction in various sizes.

This section describes: preparation ofthe sign legend, typographic format, selection of sign panel size, and identifi-cation of cooperating sponsors or out-granted facilities. Fabrication drawingsand material specifications can be foundin Appendix B. These specifications areused in conjunction with existing Corpsprocurement procedures when orderingsigns.

The most frequent use of the StandardIdentification sign will be as a free-standing sign mounted between two posts(page 5-5). Small versions of the sign, mounted on building exteriors, follow thesame panel layout (page 5-6). For large-scale applications, such as the face of apowerhouse, the sign is made fromindividual letters. Each letter is applieddirectly to the concrete surface of the wall(page 5-7).

At locations where, under the terms of alease, a different managing agency hasplaced their own identification sign, aCorps Participation Credit sign is used. This sign has its own grid format shown onpage 5-19.

A Secondary Identification sign is avail-able for use within a Corps project. It isplaced along project roadways to identifyindividual facilities within a project.Because it is placed within a project, theCorps Signature is not used on the panel. The types of legends and their applica-tions are shown on page 5-20.

Helvetica Bold typeface is used on allIdentification signs in upper and lowercase, initial capitals only. Letter- andword-spacing is to follow standardsoutlined in Section 4. The Corps Signa-ture is used on Standard Identification,Credit, and (optional) Approach RoadwayDirectional signs. Once a sign is locatedwithin a project boundary, the Signature isno longer appropriate.

Special applications and situations notcovered in these guidelines should bereferred to the district Sign ProgramManager.

The sign panels below illustrate themethods used to identify Corps projectsor facilities. Examples (a), (b), and (c)are Standard Identification signs.Example (a) has the full name of theproject as the primary legend, with nosecondary legend.

At entrances to individual recreationareas which are part of a larger project,

the name of the area is the primary legend, and the overall project is the secondarylegend, as in example (b).

A local cost-sharing sponsor who operatesor manages a Corps facility or area will beidentified in the secondary legend, as inexample (c).

At Corps projects where all management

and maintenance responsibilities havebeen relinquished, lessees may use anidentification sign of their own design. Inthis situation the Corps should place aParticipation Credit sign (d) designed forthis situation. The sign is placed on theentrance road into the facility.

Secondary Identification signs (e) areused to identify areas within a project.

Selection of the most appropriate identifica-tion for a given location is determined bythe way the project is built and managed. The facility identification sign system canaccommodate a variety of legends depend-ing on identification requirements. Theserequirements may vary.

The diagram below illustrates the varietyof identification signs possible at theentrances to a project.

Size: The standard sign format is sizedproportionally on an established grid. The sizeof the panel is determined by letter size andlength of primary legend.

Sign Color: For ground or wall-mounted signs,Corps Brown background with white signlegend. The Corps Mark is Communication Red,as shown on page 4-5.

Layout: Place lettering on the sign using layoutgrids shown on pages 5-12 to 5-14.

Typography: All legends are Helvetica Bold, upper and lower case typography, alignedflush left on the grid. Letter- and word-spacing to follow typographic standards inSection 4.

Signature: Signature placed on grid in upper-left corner. No district or division identificationwill be placed on signs.

Signature Size: The Mark size is 1.33A (whereA = the capital letter height of the primarylegend). Bottom of castle aligns to base of firstprimary legend line.

Primary Legend: The name of the facility orproject being identified. This may be a one- ortwo-line legend and should identify the specificproject, area or location.

Secondary Legend: (Optional) Descriptivesupport identification. Legend type is one-halfthe size of the primary legend. The secondarylegend can be one or two lines and identifiesthe overall project or the cooperating sponsor.

The examples below illustrate theStandard Identification sign format. Theelements of this design are described inthe captions next to the illustrations.

All Standard Identification signs use agrid (pages 5-12 to 5-14) for layout andsizing. The height of capital letters forthe primary legend is referred to as A,and is the standard unit of measurement

used to determine legend size, Signaturesize, and panel format. Secondarylegends, used for either cooperatingagency or project identification, useletters equal to .5A; the Corps Mark is1.33A. These proportions are the same, regardless of letter size used for theprimary legend.

The size of the primary legend lettering,

or A, is determined by viewing distance, viewer’s speed of approach, and by theappropriateness of the overall size of thesign to the site. To calculate the appro-priate letter size, refer to the ViewingDistance Chart on page 2-6.

Follow the legend format guidelines onpages 5-9 to 5-11 when developing theidentification panel text.

Individual Letterforms StandardIdentification Sign

EP 310-1-6a01 Jun 06

Standard Identification signs may beplaced on the face of a powerhouse orlock master’s house as individual letter-forms applied directly to the concretesurface. This type of sign is intended forapplication to very large surfaces, andwhere the sign can be viewed from a longdistance.

Building-mounted letterforms become an

5-7

integral part of the architecture and arenot appropriate for all facilities. They aremore expensive when compared to mostground-mounted installations. A sign ofthis type should be specified only if thestructure is highly visible to viewers andthe visibility can justify the expense. Thistype of application is also used whenground-mounted or smaller panel signsare not practical, either because of limited

viewing distance or mounting constraints.

Each structure is designed differently, so itis important to review the size and locationof a proposed placement with an architectand the district Sign Program Manager, prior to placing an order.

a) Left margin not less than Ab) Top margin not less than .75Ac) Right margin not less than 2A

The sign should be mounted flush left on thebuilding surface with the space between theend of the longest line and the right-sidebuilding edge being a minimum of twice aswide (2A) as the left margin. Each letterform isto be mounted directly onto the surface. Useof a common mounting frame or visiblebrackets is not allowed.

Placement, letter spacing and alignment of theSignature and identification legend shouldfollow the panel layout grids 1-0 or 2-0(primary legend only) as shown on page 5-14.For further assistance contact your districtSign Program Manager.

Signs of this type are most effective whenmounted on flat concrete surfaces. Uniqueconfigurations of the wall and form of astructure will determine the actual placementlocation on the structure. Mounting individualletterforms on a highly irregular surface, or onewith a strong structural element crossingunder the graphic is discouraged.

Each individual letter is fabricated fromaluminum and finished in white. The castleMark is fabricated as an aluminum pan andfinished in Communication Red (page 4-5),with the white castle graphic applied to thesuface of the red rectangular panel.

The Signature is used in positive format. Eachletter is individually pin-mounted into thesurface of the structure. The size of the signis proportional to the depth of the return oneach letter.

Specifications are shown in 6” increments. Each installation should however be sizedappropriate to the placement location. Threedifferent assembly specifications are providedin Appendix B, pages B-12 through B-12-3.Signs are to be fabricated following the nextlarger material specification.

Standard Identification signs can accom-modate a variety of legend configura-tions; project name; area and projectnames; area name and cooperatingsponsor.

The diagrams below illustrate the sixdifferent sign legend configurations and

the possible number of lines they wouldoccupy when placed on sign panel. Thediagrams on pages 5-9 to 5-11 illustratehow the format accommodates legendsfrom the shortest (8.5 units) to the longest(16.5 units) within the Standard Identifica-tion sign grid format.

Note that the type size of the secondarylegend (cooperating agency name orproject identification) is one-half the sizeof the primary legend, A. This relationshipremains the same regardless of the size ofA.

The following display is used as a guideto determine the most appropriatelegend layout and panel width whenspecifying a sign legend.

1) Write out the primary and secondarymessages that will appear on the sign.2) Use the method outlined on page D-2to determine the length of the primary

legend.3) Determine the length of the secondarylegend using the method on D-2.4) Check the layout against the examplesbelow.5) Using the form on page D-4, determinethe appropriate panel width. Example A:refer to the panel for “Kirk Park”. Theprimary legend is short; the secondary

message is too long to fit on the panel inone line. Instead of making the sign panellarger, the secondary legend is shown intwo lines. Example B: refer to the panelfor “Whitley Creek Access Area” (page 5-10). The primary legend is long; thesecondary is short. The primary legend isplaced on two lines.

The actual length of a legend dependson the letters that make up the legend. For example, the words “campground”and “recreation” have the same numberof letters but “campground” is longer; ithas an “m” which is a very long letter.“Recreation” on the other hand, has a “t”and an “i”, which are short letters.

Legend System and Panel Format:Standard Identification Sign (cont’d)

There are two important rules in deter-mining how to format a multiline legendinto two lines:

1) A person’s name should always beon a single line.

2) A two-line legend is stronger visually

if the first line is longer than the second. This line-break rule is applicable to bothprimary and secondary legends. Notethat the legend should contain logicalline-breaks and look balanced on thepanel. Do not try to squeeze a large signonto a smaller panel.

The cost difference between panelwidths is minimal. The primary goal isto make a legible sign.

Do not routinely use the secondarylegend portion of identification signs forstreet addresses. Even when a local

emergency agency requires suchinformation, try to find an alternative -such as a separate, small custom sign- that complies with Corps signstandards.

All Standard Identification signs use thegrid shown on pages 5-13 to 5-14. Shownbelow are the six different line configura-tions possible with this grid. The ex-amples on pages 5-9 to 5-11 follow thegrids shown below for both sign lengthand depth.

Refer to the examples on pages 5-9 to 5-

11 to determine the proper legendconfiguration. There may be more thanone layout possible. Select the appropri-ate line configuration using the followingrules:

1) Does the line-break make sense?2) Does the layout look similar to ex-amples shown on pages 5-9 to 5-11?

Standard Identification Sign Grid EP 310-1-6a01 Jun 06

5-13

The grid, used for layout of StandardIdentification signs, is shown below. Thetop grid illustrates the five different panelwidths possible (see pages 5-9 to 5-11).

The six grids (page 5-14) represent thepossible legend configurations with theircorresponding panel depths. All dimen-sions are based on A, the size of capitalletters used in the primary legend. The

relationship of the secondary legend,Signature, and space between legends isalways in the same proportion to A.

Once the letter size for the primary legendis selected, the size for the secondarylegend will follow accordingly in therelationship shown on page 5-14.

To determine the appropriate panel size

for a given legend, calculate the legendlength and lay out the panel (see pagesD-2-4). Then, knowing the legend length, refer to the matrix below to determine thepanel width. Knowing the number ofprimary and secondary legend lines, determine the appropriate grid numberand refer to the matrix on page 5-14 forthe panel height.

For Standard Identification signs, the Markis 1.33A. Align the base of the castle tothe baseline of the first line of the primarylegend.

5-15

To maintain a cohesive, uniform lookamong all Corps projects, it is importantthat the grid format is used correctly.Examples of correct and incorrect legendplacement and format are shown onpages 5-16 and 5-17.

In addition to format, there are a numberof other elements which must be executedconsistently. These are as follows;

Fabrication: Follow the specificationsindicated in the matrix and outlined inAppendix B.

- Do not modify the materials or methods, nor intermix different techniques such asmounting individual letters on a woodpanel.

Mounting: Avoid mounting post and panelsigns on steep grades.

- Do not embellish the support withmasonry bases.- Carefully designed landscaping may bepermitted (page 2-9).- Lighting, if necessary, should be of thegeneral area in which the sign is located, not on the sign itself.- Do not use colors other than thosespecified in this manual.

Refer to Section 2, Principles andGuidelines, for additional examples ofstandards.

Secondary Identification Sign UseEP 310-1-6a01 Jun 06

5-20

The map below illustrates the use ofSecondary Identification signs and theirrelationship to the Standard Identificationsign.

The Standard Identification sign is placedalong the public access roadway at theentrance to a park or recreation area.Individual facilities within that project canbe identified with a Secondary Identifica-tion sign or with a symbol sign. If the

facility has a name (e.g. Elm Picnic Areaor Beaver Falls Campground), a Second-ary Identification sign should be used. Ifthe facility does not have a name (e.g.boat launch or ranger station), a Symbolsign is appropriate.

The Secondary Identification signs can beground-mounted with two posts or wall-mounted on a building.

Only the Standard Identification sign usesthe Corps Signature. Once a sign islocated within a project boundary, theSignature is no longer appropriate.

Secondary Identification Sign Format EP 310-1-6a01 Jun 06

5-21

The Secondary Identification sign is usedon project roadways to identify individualfacilities. It is smaller in scale than theStandard Identification sign. A separategrid for layout is illustrated on page 5-23.The height of the capital letters of theprimary legend is referred to as A and isthe standard unit of measurement todetermine legend and panel size.

The size of the primary legend, A, isdetermined by viewing distance (seepage 2-6), and by the relationship of theoverall size of the sign to its site.

The panel with 2” legend size is for wallmounting.

The example below illustrates the

Secondary Identification sign format. Theuse of the Corps Signature is not permit-ted.

Typography: All legends to be Helvetica Bold, upper and lower case typography, alignedflush left on the grid. Letter and word spacingto follow Corps typographic standards inSection 4.

Sign Panel: Layout based on grid on page 5-23. Overall size is determined by the lettersize and length of legend.

Sign Color: Corps Brown background withwhite sign legend. Refer to color standardson page 4-5.

Material: Signs are constructed of routedwood (4” or 6” primary legend unit) or HDOplywood or aluminum with applied retroreflec-tive sheeting (all sizes).

*Sign panel size varies with legend lengthand configuration (see page 5-23).

secondary legend, and space betweenlegends is always in the same proportionto A, regardless of the size of A or theoverall sign size.

To determine the appropriate panel sizefor a given legend, calculate the legendlength and lay out the panel (see pagesD-2 through D-4). Then, knowing thelegend length, refer to the matrix below,to determine the panel width. Knowing

the number of primary and secondarylegend lines, determine the appropriategrid number and refer to the matrix below, left, for the panel height.

The sign legend is always placed flush lefton the panel.

If a required legend length exceeds themaximum length shown, seek the help ofthe district Sign Program Manager.

In managing recreation and naturalresources, it is often necessary thatagencies work together with neighborsand local communities - in everythingfrom wildlife protection and habitatimprovement to recreational facilityenhancements and customer service.

The Corps Identification Sign withPartner Logo(s) provides a way to

recognize other agencies or organiza-tions that share in the operation andmanagement of facilities on Corps feeowned land.

These signs are mounted and placedthe same as the Standard Identificationsign to identify the entrance to a jointlymanaged or funded area or facility. Aformal agreement must be in placebefore this sign may be used.

There are two formats. One format is forone partner and places the CorpsSignature and the partner logo on eitherside of the legend.

The second format allows for more thanone partner and places the CorpsSignature and partner logos below thelegend.
