1. Introduction

Many differently abled children are born on the poor, remote, east coast of India. Dr. Ramesh, the Campus doctor often sighs:

"If I had only seen this child before, the child would have had been much better off!”A big problem is that the parents think that a child with a disability is a punishment from a God. They are ashamed and hide the child in their home. The result: the child is waiting in the hut all day until the parents are back from their work at sea or in the fields. The child does not go to school, has no friends and does not develop any skills. And that's how it goes, sometimes for many years. At the Campus Challenge that may all change:

• 150 children and youngsters are living on the Campus itself. All with a physical and / or intellectual disability. They receive medical care, go to school or follow a course.

• 850 children from the neighboring villages and hamlets receive outpatient care in their family homes (United Nations Convention persons with Disability)

2. Our missionThe mission of Friends Indeed, local partner Association Saikorian and Campus Challenge is:

"A home, a school and a futureFor every child with a disability.

3. The approach

The CBR Guideline New Delhi 2010A wheelchair or hearing aid definitely helps, but more is needed to give a child or youngster in a fishing village a prospective future. An integrated approach in five areas is required in accordance with the CBR Guideline 2010. And that is what Campus Challenge offers:

• Education English Medium School and special education• Healthcare Medical Center and the Campus Outreach Team• Coaching for work Vocational training and College outside the Campus• Social life The community on the campus, the Children's Village• Social empowerment Children's council

The United Nations Convention for persons with disabilitiesThe United Nations Convention for people with disabilities (New York 2006) is also applied at the Campus, which means that all children with a disability have the right to 'family life'. In summary, the best position for the child or the young person is:

• when the child or the youngster lives in a family• When the care is provided in accordance with the CBR Guidelines.

But when living within a family is possible, there is a seat for 150 children and youngsters in the Children's Village at Campus Challenge. And via the Ambulatory Team of the Campus another 850 children and youngsters are reached who do live with their parents.

4. The Children's Village

The Children's Village on the Campus opened its doors in 2010. 120 children and 30 youngsters live together with the staff and guests. There are five houses for girls and five houses for boys:

Physical limitation 61 Visual impairment 19 Auditory limitation 25 Intellectual limitation 13

The spacious Campus school is accessible to children and youngsters in a wheelchair and on crutches. The visually impaired children also easily find their way.The dining room, library, computer room and medical center are right next to the children’s homes.Cars are not allowed on the premises; the children can play safely on the porches and on the street. And the following motto seems to apply:

'If everyone has a restriction ...... nobody has a restriction'

On their way to school!

5. The Campus School

A significant amount of work has to be done at school, because most of thechildren come in with a considerable educational disadvantage. Extra homework classes are needed, often before school time and/or in the evening. 65 Children attend the English Medium School (grade 1 - 10) and 55 children follow Special Education, divided into three classes. The ten teachers are very dedicated and are determined that the children develop well and earn good grades to increase their future chances.

There is also free time: after school the kids make the Campus unsafe! Accidentally a window Pane may break hit by a football or cricket ball or there is a bleeding knee because someone falls off the swing. Butfortunately, there is the healthworker who comes running out with a plaster.

Last year 5 children passed their 10th grade exam with outstanding results and moved on to secondary school. Two of them are in an engineering college. Moreover, also 14 either deaf-mute or blind children left the campus after the 8th grade to continue to secondary education. They make us very proud! And ... next year, again 17 children will leave the Campus to continue their education!

A part of the deaf-mute and blind children who left with 8th grade in their pocket!

6. Education for youngsters

For differently abled youngsters living in remote villages in the coastal region, there is hardly any chance of a prospective future. Often, they only go to primary school for a few years or do not go to school at all. For them it is a huge opportunity to take vocational training on the Campus.Since 2010 youngsters are selected by the social workers. For half a year to a year they may participate inone of the courses as described below. Depending on their limitation some extra time may be allowed. Subsequently they are guided to employment. The following observations are made:1. Sewing trainingThe physically limited or deaf youngsters that follow a sewing course generally find a job. A position in a sewing workshop turned outnot to be sustainable because of the very poor working conditions and exploitation. The best option is to finance a sewing machine with a micro credit scheme and let the students go back to their own village. There they may make a reasonable contribution to the family income.Training objects are: uniforms, shirts, sundresses, shawls, jewelry and bags2. Printing assistantPhysically limited youngsters who receive training at the printing department find a place as assistant printer in a printing office in Vizianagaram. This is rather successful.Training objects are: Basic skills in printing, working with the computer.

3.Carpentry workshopLightly physically limited youngsters started to make furniture, but it appears that this gives many problems when using the machines. Also working at the construction workshop was too high a risk. Therefore, the program was adjusted to making smaller objects such as wooden toys, which eventually will be sold the nearest city and on the website. Also the youngsters assist in the maintenance of Campus. This way we also hope to be able to offer a place for deaf youngsters.Training objects are: Basic carpentry, maintenance work on the Campus, wooden toys

4. Computer trainingThe youngsters with a physical disability who have followed computer training usually find a job. But that is not the case for visually impaired or hearing-impaired youngsters. We have adjusted the selection criteria. To be accepted for this training one has to finish tenth grade andto have reasonable visual and hearing capacities.Training objects are: MS Office (e.g.-Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Photoshop)and Desktop Publishing.

Horticulture Solar Panel

5. Horticulture employee (started February 2018)With about 200 mouths to feed, this implies 600 meals a day, adding up to 365 x 600 = 219,000 meals every year. So, no wonder the current food budget amounts to approximately € 18,000 on an annual basis. For that reason, we would like to develop a garden at the Campus that:

• provides fresh fruit and vegetables for the Campus• may be partly looked after by thedifferently abled children – the school garden• is a training place for the differently abled youngsterswho want to become a horticultural

employee• In the future Campus may welcome schools from the area for a series of lectures in the semi-

open greenhouse with the aim to teach how to run a school garden

6. Vocational training for mechanics/tuk tuk workshop, starts in 2018This new vocational training will be a one year course for physically disabled, deaf mute and mildly mentally disabled youngsters. They will get familiar with motorbike repair while practicing on second hand Tuk Tuk cars. Maintenance of wheelchairs and tricycles will also be on the curriculum, which very nicely combines with the needs of the Campus wheelchair and tricycle owners. The training serves as a ‘bridge’ to the auto companies in the neighborhood and in the nearby city. The course includes the matching of the youngsters with a suitable company.

7. Learning Company Solar assemblage starts in 2018The Campus is located in a rural area; surrounded by agricultural land and fishermen villages and the nearby high altitude tribal area Ananthagiri and Araku. Many families are not connected to the electricity grid. People are relying on wood for cookingand in the evening a kerosene lamp lights up the huts. With a roof of dried palm leaves covering the huts this is an extremely dangerous situation. Often a whole village is completely burned down. The intention is to purchase the individual components for solar panels and assemble the panels in the workshop. The panels will be assembled and starter kits will be made for in-house solar lights, street lights, power banks, rechargeable torches and radios. The planning is to make it a learning company: youth also has to take care of the organizational aspects and financial aspects: to buy the stock, produce, sell and deliver. This means: running a good administration on the computer, answering the phone, the mails etc. There is a separate one time estimate of € 100.000 to realize the three new trainings. FI expects that the fundraising will be completed in April 2018. In February 2018, already a start was made with the development of the garden and also the first youngsters arrived for the education.

3. Medical care

Medical care for the campus childrenThe Ambulatory Team of the Campus locally called the 'Campus Outreach Team' works from the Medical Center on the Campus. The staff consists of a doctor, a nurse, four social workers, two physiotherapists and three orthopedic technicians. The Medical Center is close to the school: the children and youngsters on the Campus can easily walk or roll down to the center. It is also easily accessible for children and youngsters from the nearby villages: every day the ambulance goes to the villages and to pick up children and their parents or grandparents for 'physio' or 'ortho' treatment.

Medical care for the outside children1770 children were identified in the period 01.01.2010 - 31.12.2017, subdivided as follows:

• 150 children and youth Campus Challenge CBR care• 850 children and youth Campus Outreach program CBR care• 770 children Counseling to government government

The work areaThe work area of the Campus Outreach Team comprises four municipalities with a total of 379 villages and hamlets:Municipalities District Social Worker ClientsPusapatirega Vizianagaram Ms. Gowri 349Bhogapuram Vizianagaram Mr. Somayya 414Ranasthalam Srikakulam Ms. Kalyani 411Denkada Vizianagaram Mr. K. PhysiotherapyIn the morning, it is always very busy in the physiotherapy room at Prema. The 'outside children', often with multiple limitations come for physiotherapy, a special chair or an orthopedic aid. Some children aresending to a specialist for a scan or for further diagnostics. If there is no parent or if the parent is not able to accompany the child, the social worker will go along.

In the afternoon, the children and youngsters have the floor at the physio is for the Campus children. Any problem with their crutches, Orthosis, adapted shoes, walker or wheelchair is solved directly because the orthopedic workshop is right next to the physiotherapy room.

The orthopedic workshopWe are very proud of the orthopedic workshop! Because with this facility we can do a good job for the children on the Campus and the surrounding areas. The three employees have a physical disability themselves; they originally came to the Campus as a youngster mid-2012.Little miracles are happening here. Children, who only were able to crawl all of their lives, are given an orthopedic aid. And then ... .. It happens. The child is able to stand up and step by step learns to move around! Whoever observes this process, will never forget the sweat droplets on the forehead and the strenuous, but oh so proud look in the eyes of the child.

The Campus closely cooperates with Mobility India in Bangalore, the largest orthopedic center in Andhra Pradesh. Here, our youngsters are trained as orthopedic employees. The Campus has a biannuallyexchange program with Mobility India/the Red Cross. Ten students from all over the world come to the Campus for training, live in the Children's Village and complete their training with a practical exam in the field.

5. One-off expenses

IntroductionThe Campus was built in 2008 and 2009. That means that the buildings and equipment are in need of renovation. The past two years parts have already been renovated:

• A team from the AGP boarded the plane and painted eight houses in the Children's Village• A team from the Corlaer College Nijkerk painted the remaining two houses

With the availablebudget, all paint could be purchased. All 30 rooms and 30 bathrooms could be renovated, the roofs coated and the essential pesticide treatment took place. Also, mattresses and 120 pillows were replaced; new sheets, floor mats and toilet bags .Both working teams left the Campus with the children's happy faces in their hearts!

The medical centerThis building has the highest priority now. The roof needs to be repaired, cracks need to be repaired, the toilets renewed and painting have to be redone. This building houses the orthopedic workshop, physiotherapy, doctor, health worker and sewing center.

The kitchen and dining hallNine years of intensive cooking took place in this kitchen which is clearly visible. The equipment is due for replacement;the walls need to be painted. The floor and the tables in the dining hall are still fine. However, it must be painted and the rinsing area and toilets must be renovated.

The schoolThe school is the largest building, with ten classrooms, library, the Printshop and a conference room. A paint job is urgent, some windows and doors have to be renewed, here and there a ball has gone through the window, the roof needs to be coated and the toilets have to be renovated.

A new four-wheel driveA large part of the work takes place in the surrounding 379 villages with very poor roads. There will probably be a new ambulance available through a neighboring company. In addition, to reach the fishing and tribal a village in the rainy season, a new four-wheel drive is needed.

Housing for youngstersWe are expanding the vocational training, which means we need extra living quarters is for 30 youngsters. We have to build two houses, one for boys and one for girls.

SolarCampus has an electricity bill of around € 6.000 per year. Solar is becoming cheaper and cheaper, because the government of India started a big subsidy program and opened the facilities to deliver the power back to the system, which means no batteries needed anymore! Where a few years ago a total package for campus cost € 90.000, now it can be achieved for € 30.000. And no power cuts anymore, which would be a relief for all rooms who have machines, like the orthopedic workshop, the computer rooms, the sewing center, carpenter shop etc.

Staff members of Friends Indeed are present at the Campus several times a year. Every year there are two board meetings with AS and there is daily email and skype contact with the staff. Many Dutch guests (groups) and volunteers visit the Campus.

Friends Indeed and the Saikorian Association strive to make the Campus as sustainable as possible. To achieve this is important that Dutch and Indian donors will work together. That is why Friends Indeed organizes a fundraising course on Campus in the spring of 2018. The aim for 2018 is that the Campus will raise about 50% of the funds itself. 8. Final remark

This is, in a nutshell, the story of this unique community of differently abled children and youngstersliving at the Campus. The reason why this community needs you is to supply for each member good medical care, to get good education and when possible to find a job! Because their greatest dream is to fully participate in society, is to contribute to family income, walk straight and being respected! Your donation adds to that. On the Campus itself, in the families in the villages, at the Campus school or at the vocational training. These children make such an effort to be able to walk, to speak sign language, to learn Braille, to do homework, to pass their examinations, so concentrated and so determined! One wants to become a doctor, another engineer. Another wishes to grow tomatoes or make solar panels. Help them, to get their lives on track and have a future.
