The Emergency Department(ED) is a hospitaldepartment that provides initial treatment for
patients with a broad spectrum ofillnesses and
injuries, some of which may be life-threatening
and requires immediate attention.

Emergency Room(ER)for Levels I and IIhospitals
Emergency Room Complex (ERC)forLevels III and IV hospitals
In line with this mandate, there has been ageneral consensus, among experts from thePhilippine Society of Emergency Care Physiciansand the Philippine College of Emergency
Medicine, setting a maximum of four (4) hoursstandard waiting time for patients attended at theemergency room within which appropriatedisposition shall have been established.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT Show-window of a hospital facility providing 24-
hour service, seven (7) days a week
The care provided to each patient is carefully
planned, written in the patients record andeffectively carried out in a timely and responsive
manner
Only qualified and competent personnel with
training on basic and advanced cardiac lifesupport (BLS and ACLS) systems are assigned at
the ER Complex

Clinical Practice Guidelines and ClinicalPathways developed by the hospital and/or
specialty societies are used to guide patient
assessment and management
Patients categorized as emergent, urgent, or non-

continuous patient care services within the ED
through inter-departmental referral or to
appropriate levels of care through an established
inter-hospital networking and referral system
