Introduction

This handbook is intended to help you manage your use of ICT tools at Hutchins. Knowing how to use ICT tools productively can assist you at school and in your career.

Getting started

Your computer account is your username and password. It is handed to you on day 1 of Term 1 by your mentor or classroom teacher. It is needed for access to the wi-fi network, the internet, your email and your access to the Schools intranet and online classrooms (Rory):

1. Read the responsible use agreement

The responsible use agreement outlines all students six basic responsibilities for using the wi-fi services, internet quota and email communications.

2. Sign your computer agreement form and get it back to your mentor

This form is needed to keep a live account.

3. Log on to a computer with a wired network connection to change your password when you first receive it.

Wired network cables are available to use at the Libraries loan desks and in some labs or classrooms.

4. Register for password management (lets you change your password if it expires)

Your Hutchins computer account gives you access to a unique range of the Schools online software and services such as:

Free copies of Microsoft Office for your devices (log in to your webmail to access)

Access to the online video training site Lynda.com

The Lynda.com site has video courses to help you learn just-in-time when you wish know more about using social media, creative arts and design or many software products in business, programming and IT worlds. Check it out

Your laptop

If you are a student in Years 5 through to 12, you will be using your own laptop at School. It will need to meet the Minimum Specifications listed in a section of this handbook.

Please note that a tablet, such as an iPad, will not meet these requirements. You will need a laptop.

Please contact Hutchins IT Dept through your class teacher or mentor, or visit the IT Department in the Nettlefold Library in Senior School, or email the [email protected] if you need to arrange a short term loan of a laptop.

If you are in Years 3 or 4, there is a trolley of laptops available to support class work.

Connecting laptops, phones and tablets

We support the connection of your devices to the schools network. See the guides for details on connecting each type of device:

8 characters long

A capital letter

A number

A wild character (!@#$%^&*)

Email

We use Microsoft Office 365

To access webmail, use the webmail links on Hutchins Central, the Hutchins web site, or go to https://outlook.com/hutchins.tas.edu.au

As mentioned earlier in this handbook, your email address is your [email protected]

Whilst messaging apps are growing in popularity, email in the cloud is still one of the most widely used forms of communication in education and industry. Our School email has no advertising, it is secure and the School owns the content (which is not necessarily the case with free accounts).

It is integrated with other software and systems used at Hutchins such as Rory, and OneDrive, as well as the Schools email address list. You can easily search for any student or teachers email address. Make it a habit to check your school email each morning.

6.1 More about Outlook webmail

Once signed in, you can click on the menu button to access other Office 365 services, such as OneDrive (where you can save your work), or Word, Excel and PowerPoint online versions.

6.2 Microsoft Office is free for students

In this link to Office 365 you can click to install Microsoft Office on your laptop and home computers this works for both Windows and Macs

OneDrive for Business (save your work here)

OneDrive for Business comes with your Hutchins email account and is accessible from the menu button (9 small squares icon) when you are in your webmail

You can drag and drop files straight in from the desktop or any folder[footnoteRef:1] If you are using Safari, you will need to use the upload button as the drag and drop function is not available. [1: Tested as working with Internet Explorer 11 and Chrome on Windows, Chrome on Mac. Safari need to use Upload button. ]

utchins email

You can also use the upload button

OneDrive for Business is available as an app on the Apple App store.

Also available for iOS on the Apple Store (Apple iPhone, iPad and iPodTouch) are Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. There are versions on the Google Play store for Android, and Windows Store for Windows devices.

Note: if using these, sign in with your Hutchins account to activate them and link them to your OneDrive so that you can edit the same Word, Excel and PowerPoint files on your laptop and/or mobile devices.

Choosing a laptop

If youre not sure about having a Windows or a Mac laptop, you can discuss it with a member of the IT team or your teachers. Hutchins supports both platforms, and you can get free copies of Microsoft Office for your Mac or Windows laptop.

1. Read the following minimum specifications and choose something that meets as many of these requirements as possible. A tablet such as an iPad is not sufficient. You need a laptop.

You need to send your file for printing from your laptop and have your Student ID Card handy to use at any of these Xerox photocopier/printers to call up your file from a centralised network queue to print.

Follow the same steps above as with other printers, but add the following information:

smb://printers/xeroxphotocopiers

Driver Software: FX Print driver[footnoteRef:2] [2: If the driver doesnt appear in the list, you may need to download and install the drivers from here: http://central.hutchins.tas.edu.au/ithelp/StudentICTHelpDocs - in Mac Drivers for Xerox PhotocopiersIf asked for a password whilst you install the driver, put in your MacBook password]
