Deidara's Clay Spider Tutorial
By Rishi Ramraj
Difficulty: Easy
In this tutorial we will be making clay spiders, as used by Deidara in Naruto Shippuden (tm).
Introduction
You will need the following:
Model Magic (tm) A re-sealable bagA small, disposable cup of waterCotton swabsA fine tipped permanent markerSmall garbage bag tiesA reference picture
Model Magic (tm) is modeling clay that air dries. You can get it at art and office stores.
The garbage bag ties will be used to make the spider's legs. The ones I use are 3 inches (7.5cm)long and 1/8 inches (3mm) wide.
Be sure to wash your hands before you start, unless you want a spotted spider :)
Things You Will Need
Start by preparing your work area. Remember you may accidentally spill your water, so be sure tohave some tissue paper on hand.
Open the Model Magic (tm) and put it into the resealable bag. If it is not air tight, the Model Magic(tm) will dry. We will only be using a small portion of clay in this tutorial, so you can save the rest for later.
Model Magic (tm) is water soluble. You can make it softer by putting dabs of water into it. Once allof the water evaporates the Model Magic (tm) becomes hard.
Getting Started
The first step is to make the abdomen of the spider. Roll a blob of Model Magic (tm) in your palmuntil it turns into a ball.
If your ball has a lot of folds on the surface, dip your thumb into the water and then stick it into yourblob of Model Magic (tm). Then squish the Model Magic (tm) a few times to work the water in. It should become softer and easier to roll.
If you use too much, it might become sticky. If it does, keep rolling it on in your hands and it willbecome harder. Once you're satisfied, go on to the next step.
Abdomen
Make a second ball about half the size of the first.
Next, join the first ball to the second. This can be a bit tricky. Wet the tip of your finger in the waterand then rub it gently on the surface of the first ball. Then gently press the second ball onto the first.
Center
Make a third ball about half the size of the second. Don't attach it yet.
Pinch the head to make the start of the mouth. Again, don't attach it.
Head
On the edge of your pinch, cut two slits for your fangs. Your cuts should look like the image below.
Next, separate your fangs just enough so that you can cut the center out with scissors.
Then, gently push the fangs back together.
Fangs
Now, smooth out the edges left by the scissors. Take a cotton swab and wet the plastic handle. Then gently rub it against the fangs until they become smooth. Now, attach the head.
Place the first and second balls on a flat surface. Then wet the spot on the second ball where thehead will go. Gently slide the head into position and press it into the second ball. This way, your spider will lie flat when you put him down.
To make the eyes, first cut a cotton swab in half. Then push the cut end into the head where theeyes should go. Don't color them in just yet because the Model Magic (tm) is not dry enough.
The spider also has two tiny eyes on his forehead. Press the tip of a fine black marker into thehead to create these eyes.
Eyes
To create the legs, start by flattening a blob of model magic on to your work desk. Then wet bothsides of a twist tie. Place the tie in the center of the blob. Then fold the top of the blob over it.
Next, thin the blob around the twist tie until you can see the shape of the twist tie in the ModelMagic (tm). After you get an even coating around the tie, use scissors to cut around it.
Legs
Bend the leg slightly off center so that one side is longer than the other.
Curve the legs so that it looks like a shark's fin. The longer side is the side on the right.
Bend the end of the right (longer) side of the fin into a foot. Gently squish the left (shorter) side sothat it is easier to attach to the body.
Look at your reference picture to figure out how to place the legs. Wet the top part of the left(shorter) side of the leg. Then press it gently to the bottom of the second ball. Then smooth out the part where the leg attached.
Create 7 more legs and attach them to the spider. Make sure that the legs don't attach to eachother.
The head should be dry enough to color the eyes. Use a black marker like a Sharpie (tm). Be verycareful when doing this step. You may accidentally ruin your work.
Remember to seal your bag of Model Magic and clean up your mess. Leave your spider to dry for anight. Enjoy :)
