Introduction DBQ Directions: The task below is based on documents 1 through 5. This task is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Look at each document and answer the question or questions after each document. Use your answers to the questions to help you write your essay. Introduction DBQ

Directions: The task below is based on documents 1 through 5. This task is designed to test your ability to work with historical documents. Look at each document and answer the question or questions after each document. Use your answers to the questions to help you write your essay.

Historical Background:Documents can tell you a lot about a person that you may never meet. Personal documents about a person-whether it is an official government or religious document, photographs, letters, or their own work-can describe a person’s personality traits, emotions, or beliefs to you. Examining primary source documents, which are someone else’s personal documents, is not only a central part of social studies, and the way your teacher teaches social studies; it is also an important skill for your life!

Task:For Part A, read each document carefully and answer the question or questions after each document. Then read the directions for Part B and write your essay.

For Part B, use the information from the documents, your answers to the questions in Part A, and your knowledge of social studies to write a well organized essay. In your essay you will have to answer the following question:

This is a letter of recommendation for William Hendrick for the PhD program at

the CUNY Graduate center. I have known Bill for over ten years. He is currently a social

studies teacher and coordinator at Halsey JHS 157 in Queens. I have known Bill since he

was an undergraduate when I supervised his student teaching. As a graduate student he

presented on a panel about his teaching experience at an international conference in

Grenada, Spain and wrote two articles published in Social Science Docket, one on the

impact of the Panama and Suez canals and a document-based essay question on Jewish

immigrants in New York. As a teacher, Bill has involved his JHS students as participants

and presenters at the annual Hofstra Middle School Museum. One year they created

displays on their own experiences as immigrants. He also has students participate in the

annual NY and Slavery Walking Tour. This passed year I have worked with Bill on a

Teaching American history grant developing unit packages on immigrants in New York

City that compared different waves of immigration. William Hendrick is a wonderful

teacher and school leader. He also has tremendous potential as a historian and educational

researcher. He has my highest recommendation.

A. Mr. H in Copan, Honduras: Copan was the site of a major Pre-Columbian city-state of the Mayans in Central America. Copan is located in western Honduras, near to the border Guatemala. Today, only ruins are left where once stood a great city-state.

B. Mr. H in Paquime, Mexico: Paquime - also known as Casas Grandes - was the largest Pre-Columbian city in Northern Mexico and the largest city in North America during the 1200’s. From 1200-1400 AD it was the center of culture for native people within a thirty thousand square mile area, which included far west Texas, southern New Mexico, southeastern Arizona, northeastern Sonora (Mexico), and northern Chihuahua (Mexico).
