A revered history...Our company was founded in 1855 by Edmund Bell who was a merchant converter of textileproducts. He developed the business and product ranges until 1890 when it was taken over byhis two sons.

During the 1930’s the demand for Blackout curtain linings grew rapidly and Edmund Bell & Companygrasped this opportunity to expand the business into the supply of these fabrics. This became theprimary focus of the business and rapidly moved the company into its current position as the leadingsupplier of curtain linings, blackout and dimout fabrics in the UK and Europe. The business then grewto become the leading supplier of curtain linings and flame retardant fabrics both in the UK andInternationally. Over the years we have worked closely with our manufacturers and finishers todevelop the best processes to make the finest quality products in the industry.

Edmund Bell celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2005 by receiving the ultimate accolade of beingawarded the Queens Award for Enterprise: International Trade, becoming one of an elite group ofcompanies to win the most coveted business award in the UK.

A new era began in 2008During 2008 the business was acquired by Brian Atherton and introduced a lifetime of experience and knowledgeinto the company. His son John is working alongside his father and is dedicated to further developing the businessto face the needs of the industry and support our valuable customer base. They have both pledged to invest heavilyin developing new product ranges, machinery and facilities to help expand the business further.

Edmund Bell now employs a full time dedicated Sales Team covering the whole of the UK who regularly visit ourcustomers to keep them up to date with all of our products and new development and help to choose the rightproducts to meet their needs. Our dedicated internal customer services team work closely with the Sales team toensure that we deliver the excellent levels of service that our customers expect from us. We are all striving to improveproducts and services to support the needs of our customers.

Professional SateenCurtain LiningsEdmund Bell offer a comprehensive range of branded curtain linings to

meet your quality, application and value requirements.

The construction techniques of our sateen linings involves a higher

number of threads to be used. This process increases the density of

cloth, thereby reducing light penetration and degradation. It also helps

to lower the levels of shrinkage caused by washing or dry cleaning.

The manufacturing techniques add a finish and lustre to the fabric

which substantially improves the appearance.

Some curtain linings have a basic calendered finish which will give the

lining an improved appearance; but at Edmund Bell, we use what is

known as a Schreiner finish on all our top quality sateen curtain linings

giving a product that has a vibrant radiant appearance.

This exclusive finish lines up all the threads of the surface of the lining

and helps to both improve opacity, handle and appearance.

Things to be considered when selecting a sateen curtain lining:

• Is it a true sateen or a twill?

• Has it got a Schreiner finish?

• Does it meet the highest light fastness standards, as our Chromaxand Platinum ranges do?

• Does the product meet your washing criteria?

• Can it be dry cleaned?

Domestic DimoutsVenus Home can be used as either a coloured lining or a single layer face

fabric and will help to exclude light in those situations. It is available in a

wide choice of colours, these are manufactured using three layers of pre-

dyed coloured yarns including a black layer which helps to create the

A traditional interlining that gives you the widest variety of weights and

finishes to help improve the draping qualities of your curtains. They

will add extra weight and body to the lightest of curtain fabrics and are

ideal for use with Roman Blinds to improve the folding and help to

block out some of the light. Domette interlinings are often used with

the highest quality face fabrics such as silks and taffetas to give them

extra protection from the harmful effects of strong sunlight.


Synthetic InterliningAvailable in a selection of different weights Intermax synthetic linings

will give you a choice of economical products that have a high level of

stability. They are manufactured from selected high grade polyester

and viscose fleece which is stitched using a lockstitch process which

helps to reduce shrinkage whilst negating any distortion or stretching.

Standards and like all of our curtain linings have a high level of fastness

to light. Where extra protection from the effects of sunlight are needed

PIECE LENGTHSThe piece lengths quoted are nominal. Edmund Bell will despatch the nearest quantity availableusing full pieces, unless agreed otherwise. Tickets must be returned in the event of a piece lengthshortage claim.

Our Service Terms Defined

Sateen - An appearance that is produced by showing more of the fine weft threads on the surface of thefabric and creates a higher sheen and denser appearance to the fabric, normally associated with cottoncurtain lining fabrics.

Satin - A weaving method that that shows more of the finer warp threads on the surface of the fabric andcreates a higher sheen and denser appearance to the fabric, normally associated with polyester cottoncurtain lining fabrics or face fabrics.

Twill weave - A weaving method that is produced by showing the warp threads on the surface of thefabric to create a soft sheen and denser appearance to the fabric and giving better protection againstsunlight.

Warp - The threads running down the fabric parallel to the selvedge of the fabric.

Weft - The threads running across the width of the fabric.

Selvedge - The edge of the fabric.

Calendered Finish - A process where the fabric is passed through heated rollers to add a sheen to thesurface of the fabric and give the fabric a crisper handle.

Schreiner Finish - A process where the fabric is passed through a fine engraved roller system in order toalign all of the weft threads thereby adding a lustrous appearance to the fabric and helping to improve theopacity to give added protection against the effects of sunlight.

Light Fastness - The ability of the fabric to hold its original colour when exposed to sunlight. This ismeasured using a standard method which is compared to the British Standard Grey Scale which helps tomeasure the variation in colour after exposure against the original colour.

Platimum - Edmund Bell’s brand name for the higher density 100% cotton curtain linings which ismanufactured with additional threads to give extra density and protection against the harmful effects ofsunlight.

Chromax - Edmund Bell’s exclusive brand for 100% Cotton curtain lining which is manufactured to thehighest standards to give protection against the harmful effects of sunlight and is available in a number ofcolours and finishes.

Solprufe 63 - A well known industry brand name that is synonymous with curtain linings giving excellentlight fastness and dimensional stability.

96 Pick - The number of threads per inch used on our Chromax and Chromasol curtain linings.

116 Pick - The number of threads per inch used on our higher density Platinum collection.

CRF - Crease Resistant Finish that is applied to a number of our cotton sateen linings to improve handlingand draping qualities.

Teflon - A branded protective coating which helps to protect the fabric against moisture and soiling.

Creased & Lapped - A traditional method where the fabric is folded in half and wrapped around a boardto make it easier to handle and reduce the amount of storage space required.

FWOT - Fabric rolled full width on tubes.

HWOT - Fabric folded in half and then rolled on to tubes to reduce storage space.

Cut Length - Fabric cut to a specific length.

Piece - A full roll of fabric.

Dimout - A fabric that is woven in multiple layers to help to block out light giving an almost blackout effect.

Thermal - A fabric with a single back coating fabric that is used to help insulate the room..

2 Pass Blackout - A double coating applied to curtain lining that blocks out light.

3 Pass Blackout - The various terms (plain, twill, and sateen) describe the pattern of the interlacing ofwarp and weft in woven fabrics.

Bump - A thick heavy interlining produced to help with insulation and add extra body to curtains

Domette - A lighter Cotton interlining produced used to improve the draping qualities and appearance ofcurtains and roman blinds while improving insulation.

Sarille - A synthetic interlining produced used to improve the draping qualities and appearance of curtainsand roman blinds while improving insulation.

Pre-Shrunk - A process that is used to reduced the amount of shrinkage of interlinings whenmanufacturing curtains.

Duoline - An interlining bonded to a cotton or polyester cotton curtain lining.

Microfibre - A textured yarn used to add extra body to the fabric without adding weigh, generally used inlighter weight fabrics.

Buckram - A stiff coated fabric used for curtain headings and tiebacks

Fusible - A stiffened fabric that can be ironed onto face fabrics generally used for tie backs.

Durable FR - A flame retardant finish that can either dry cleaned or washed dependant on cleaninginstructions.

Non-durable FR - A flame retardant finish that cannot be cleaned unless it is retreated afterwards.

Inherent FR - A fabric that is woven from flame retardant yarns.

Leaded - A fabric with lead chain weight added to one side.

Heat set - A heating process that is used to reduce the amount of shrinkage of a fabric or lining.

Raised - A combing process used to loosen the fibres on a fabric to give it a furry appearance which helpsto improve the thickness and insulation properties.
