SYMPOSIUM ON PERITONEAL DIALYSIS Introduction The 3rd European Peritoneal Dialysis Meeting was held in Edinburgh, Scotland between April 5th-7th, 1998. The meeting was jointly organized by the Nephrology Depart- ments of the University of Edinburgh, the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Humboldt Universita ¨t zu Berlin and Universiteit Gent. More than 1200 delegates from 49 countries came together to discuss recent develop- ments in both clinical and basic science aspects of perito- neal dialysis. The main theme of the program was “Long-Term Pres- ervation of Peritoneal Membrane Function,” which was discussed in four symposia, three free communications sessions, and three continuing medical education sessions. Additional sessions discussed topics such as “PD and the Internet” and “The potential for animal models of PD.” The program also featured Congress Symposia organized by Baxter Healthcare Inc. and Fresenius Medical Care. The scientific committee wish to extend their gratitude to all of the members of the local organizing committee for co-ordinating such a successful event, especially the con- gress president, Dr. Robin Winney, and the vice-president, Dr. Liam Plant. We are also grateful to our major sponsor Baxter Healthcare, Inc., and to our other sponsors, Frese- nius Medical Care and Gambro SA for their generous support. The articles presented in this Symposium on Peritoneal Dialysis reflect the scientific highlights of the 3rd European meeting, and discuss various clinical and basic science questions relating to peritoneal dialysis in the 1990s.
