About the inclusive playground

In The Scale of Sea takes visitors into a world of underwater, musical whimsy and enchantment. Positioned in the centre of giant, circular musical keyboard is an ‘ocean bed’ of corals and sea creatures and kelp ‘trees’. Visitors interact with the installation by touching the keyboard. When any of the giant keys are touched, a musical sound is emitted, and each key also lights up a coral, a sea urchin, a large clam or a starfish within the colourful seascape. Visitors of all ages can play beautiful tunes, and, together, share the fun of creating a captivating sound and light show.

Enchanted Garden reveals a pathway into a glowing underwater world where visitors interact with a colourful garden of illuminated sea plants. This is a place of fun and imagination where each visitor makes their own unique discoveries. All they have to do is step upon the pathway and see where it takes them. The garden is a fully inclusive and accessible play experience for children and families of all ages and abilities. In creating this multi-sensory environment its designers aim to inspire fun and playfulness and enable children to experience it many different ways. Clearly there is much thought involved in creating such places of play, but the experience of this garden is the same for all – it is simply magical.

Beneath the Sea enables children and their families to experience the simple beauty of the aquatic landscape that lies under the waters of Sydney Harbour.The installation uses magical illuminations to create the illusion of a sea floor complete with soft flowing currents, bubbles, sea grass and sea life. They appear to float and move, and visitors can select colours for these elements as they immerse themselves in this gentle, sensory play space. The aquatic life that will be projected allow a series of sensory and textural experiences for visitors to choose how they wish to interact as they move through the seascape.

We have created an inclusive experience where all children and their families can enjoy the magic of Vivid Sydney in its 10th anniversary year. Tumbalong Lights is a collection of four interactive-play installations that form an inclusive and accessible Vivid Lights experience for both children and the young at heart.

Tumbalong Lights is a collection of four interactive-play installations that form an inclusive and accessible Vivid Lights experience for both children and the young at heart. The four under-the-sea-themed installations allow children and their families to interact with creative, awe-inspiring light experiences that help produce a sense of empowerment, a sense of control and a sense of community, while at the same time inspiring fun and playfulness. Each of the four installations are separated by fences within an enclosed space. There is a quiet area for you to revert to if need be and participant numbers at any one time will be managed by volunteers.

INTRODUCING TUMBALONG LIGHTS A magical inclusive playground

‘Inclusive’ family zone – the purpose of this zone is to help make the experience more pleasurable by limiting numbers within the space, providing dedicated access to each of the interactive installations helping families beat the queues and allowing children to play their own way, as well as, access to an observation deck that allows your family members to acclimatise themselves to the four different experiences. There are three session times each night that can be pre-booked for families who have a child or an adult with a disability. These sessions are free of charge.

Low sensory sessions - several low sensory sessions will be available each week, for families to pre-book. A low sensory session is an opportunity for people with autism or sensory sensitivities to experience Tumbalong Lights with lowered light and sound stimulation, reduced crowd numbers and fewer participants on each play experience.

Tactile tours – We are offering two tactile tours for adults and children that are blind or vision-impaired to be able to engage and enjoy each interactive play experience through a verbal description and touch. Assistance animals

are welcome at Tumbalong Lights. Spaces are limited. These sessions must be pre-booked, and are subject to demand.

Parking/Accessible parking – ICC Sydney has two car park facilities located within the Exhibition Centre and ICC Sydney Theatre. The best car park for Tumbalong Lights is Car Park 1, which is a short 2 minute walk or wheel (approx. 80 metres). There are a limited number of mobility parking spaces, so best to arrive early. Additional parking is available at Wilson Parking, Darling Quarter. More detailed information on accessible parking will be available on our website cwtumbalonglights.com

Social story and visual schedule – the social story and visual schedule have been developed to assist children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to know what to expect prior to their visit to Tumbalong Lights. They can be downloaded from cwtumbalonglights.com

Ride Into The Night channels the glory days of the suburban roller rink – but with a difference. Instead of roller skates, all participants circle the rink in wheelchairs.The rink itself is a multi-sensory experience delivered through aquatic-themed interactive light projections, LED panels and immersive seascapes. Groups of 10 participants literally ride the oceans in sessions of up to three minutes.This truly interactive and inclusive play experience is accessible to everyone. Those with wheelchairs use their own; those without can simply borrow an illuminated chair from the rink. Ride into the Night encourages all children to experience what Vivid Sydney is all about in a safe, welcoming and, most of all, fun environment.
